Hello. "It is manifestly against the Law of Nature, however defined, that a child command an old man, an imbecile lead a wise man, and a handful of people abound in superfluities while the starving multitude lacks in necessities." I learned that he was saying that the whole society was illegitimate because it was against the Law of Nature, and manifesting the corruption of the state. As a political philosopher, Rousseau was observing and analysing the society he lived in (built on the divine right of kings and inequality) and his observational statement such as the above wasn't the direct cause of the French Revolution. Voltaire apparently wrote a letter to Rousseau, in outrage, in response to the above view, while Robespierre was inspired by it. I learned that during the Reign of Terror, Robespierre led the committee of public safety in pursuit of an equal society, by which he even meant multiple massacres and public executions of those who were standing out, i.e. aristocrats. He was driven by ideology and not by pragmatic politics. By then, Rousseau was dead, and considering that most ordinary people were uneducated and illiterate in those days, i.e., they couldn't read, or were simply uninterested in, Rousseau's ideas, it wasn't like the masses rose by themselves, i.e., they were mobilised by elite ideologues like Robespierre. I know... my description is simplistic and inaccurate, but what I was getting at was that what was originally an observational idea (e.g., by Rousseau) could be developed into an ideology and exercised (e.g., by Robespierre), and result in terrible (or good) consequences. Then I wondered, in that case, if the originator of that idea should be held responsible for those consequences (in Rousseau's case, he couldn't have been held to account; he died before the French Revolution started). But then, I had too much wine, so...

Do we have any way to judge how ideas are used or measure their effects? Marx and Nieztche both branched off of Hegel. Nazis said they were following Nieztche's philosophy. How do we apportion culpability?
Naomi replies on Nov 14, 2019:
Hello. I know... I was wondering that, too. Marxism is a good example, I think; it was "innovated" in several forms. I also read or heard that the French Revolution was an error; changes could have been made by pragmatic politics, not by ideology. Political ideas (ideologies) always seem to take radical forms.

The nation is known as the happiest/the least stressed nation in the world. This is a good example of how a country can be capitalist with socialistic programmes incorporated in it, no? Hello. "In many states fireworks are illegal." We might need that in the UK; some people in the UK find every excuse to have fireworks. It is inconsiderate. My late dog was terrified of fireworks. He trembled like a leaf so bad that I was worried that he might die of a heart attack. In fact, a few days ago in England, a 18-months-old puppy died from a heart attack after fireworks frightened her. Fireworks could be restricted to public displays only and not private displays (i.e., in one's private backyard). It really is bad in the UK.

Hello ForeverFree76. Come back to me after you've managed a good "agree to disagree" conversation with a decent leftist, perhaps someone who is outside America, rather than having a bashing session. You would hopefully stop talking about leftists as collective as if they are all some kind of stupid radical ideologues. It is evident that American society is very polarised over politics. When a site like this consists mostly of American people, it hardly gives any room for others from the outside to express their views. I know at least a couple of members who were driven out of this site only because they had different political views; they didn't fit in the libertarian/conservative narrative. Nasty things were said to them (ad homs). It was an echo chamber that was evident. I would say the same about agnostic.com. or any site that attracts a certain type or group of people. I acknowledge that it is human nature, and you wouldn't know what it is like until you're on the receiving side of prejudice. I know at first hand. @RobBlair Look at the date of [yp.scmp.com]. It was published more than two months ago. These demands are by peaceful protesters. They had the Bill formally withdrawn - that was the first step, and they should have got around the table to discuss the rest with Carrie Lam in a civil, democratic manner, but violence took over and escalated. The violent protesters are giving the peaceful protesters a bad name. Demand No. 3 Retracting the classification of protesters as “rioters” No chance, because they are doing nothing but to prove that they're rioters. There is no way I can support civil disobedient, violence and crimes. Do you support vigilantism? I cannot. If the escalation of violence by the protesters is still seen somewhat acceptable by the people in Hong Kong, because they still think that the real evil is the Chinese government, that's fair enough. After all, this is a matter for them to resolve. I compare the Hong Kong protest with the Yellow Vest protest in France in terms of violence. The public support for the yellow vests was 44% as of July 2019 according to a survey by a local press. Apparently, they are gradually turning against the protesters as the violence continues. You sound like you support the Hong Kong protest - fair enough. I did, but I don't feel I can any more for the reasons above.

Hello. The Anti-Extradition Law Amendment Bill (or Anti-ELAB) movement - that's what it was, and it was originally a peaceful protest. The Bill was subsequently withdrawn but the protest then took a different direction and violence broke out. Paralysing the infrastructure of the city, breaking public facilities, setting fire to cars, stabbing police officers... I cannot see justification in violent activities. The Hong Kong protesters (apart from those peaceful ones who walked away) are going down the same path as the Yellow Vets in France. No plan, no direction, no leadership.

I agree with you that it is wrong that we have Sharia law within British society (I support the "when in Rome, do as the Romans do" approach). Who put it there? The British government. Who can remove it? The British government. And it is the voters who give legitimacy to the government to do so, and they need politicians and political parties that represent their voice. Carl Benjamin (Sargon of Akkad) joined the UKIP party and put himself forward as an MEP (Member of European Parliament) candidate, so did Tommy Robinson as independent. Also, WilyRickWiles and DrN1 are well-read). I can find plenty who blame postmodernism for the current ideological political trend, but I'm not after them. GeeMac highly recommends Prof. Roth, and I started watching his lectures. Very good. Like GeeMac says "His lectures are balanced because he has no political axe to grind." I like that. Meanwhile, As DrN1 points out, postmodernism is reflected in other areas like architecture, art, music, literature, etc. (although I'm sure some would argue that these fields are also politicised). I shall find more about them. I would like to learn more about postmodernism as a pure theory, away from the "stereotype association" of it with the current polarised politics. People who jump to the conclusion and assume that I'm a radical ideologue or something because I mention the EVIL word "postmodernism" are completely missing my point. :P Thanks for the link. I also think that people often sleepwalk into bad ideas, say, ideological narratives, or propaganda as you call it. Because they're asleep, they don't realise their thinking is "shaped".
