@WilyRickWiles It's very complicated, isn't it? Of course, every country has a unique background - history, culture, social fabric, political landscape, economic reality, legal system, etc., etc. One can't cherry-pick and adopt something from someone else's country and hope for the best. It would be interesting to see who is going to be the next President of the USA. :)

Naomi replies on Feb 26, 2020:
The NHS has been run over the last 70 years, and there is no sign of the UK turning into a communist country.😂 Is the NHS up for sale? Nah, I very much doubt it. This idea was generated by Corbynites just before the general election, probably a scaremongering tactic in desperation to win the election? I seem to remember that the apparently leaked papers have never been disclosed page by page (I may be wrong.) US pharmaceutical companies have always monopolised the global market anyway, so nothing is new, I dare say.

Hello. "Established media and social media have been consistent hot beds of conspiracy theories, why would they take a break for the CoronaVirus?" Say most people know this, why do many people share conspiracy theories, misleading information, etc. which the established media and social media constantly spew out? What kind of mentality is it? Do they enjoy being a bit of a stirrer? Do they enjoy spreading a bit of gosship? Do they genuinely have concerns so they think they're being helpful by sharing information which they believe genuine? "UK and Australian health service are not actually preparing for this but they claim they are prepared." I can't speak for Australia. The UK NHS says on its website that all NHS surgeries and hospitals are extremely well-prepared for outbreaks of infectious deseases. I wouldn't be surprised if their information was deliberately "toned down" on the severity of COVID-19; governments and authorities have a duty to protect the general public. How is the US goverment getting prepared for the outbreak of COVID-19? I heard on one news channel that in America, even people caught the coronavirus, they wouldn't go and see their doctors because consultation fees and medical fees are very expensive. They would rather believe that they just caught a bad cold and carry on with their everyday lives. 😱😱😱 (Because I don't know how true this information is, I'm not sharing it with my friends and family on social media.) Thanks for the info btw. It's interesting. :)

Hello. You have good points but HOW is missing, if I may say so, and that is always a problem for me. HOW is what makes ideas reality. I like the idea that we can make change at the local level if not at the individual level. For example, in my neighbourhood, a cleanup event is organised weekly - people actually get out on the street and pick up litter. It's simple but practical. It's better than complaining that the local authority isn't doing enough, i.e., you're not doing anything as a member of the community either. Society works better when pulled from the bottom; from a small scale, like taking individual responsibilities and neighbouring, to a large scale like getting involved in addressing municipal issues. If every single person takes responsibilities for their own actions and tries their best to live their lives well, society will be a much better place, I think.
He's right, no? We can improve politics in America. Here’s how.

@Bay0Wulf PJW really got you concerned, concerned about something that is simply not happening, I dare say. That's what contrarians do. I've been talking to my nurse friend since your original post. According to her: They do have to deal with abusive, violent patients at her hospital now and then. Reasons vary - out of frustration, unstable mental state, dementia problems, etc., etc. But there are instructions and procedures for the medical staff to follow in dealing with such individuals. And of course, they shall be treated accordingly once they've calmed down. The severity of problems is always considered. For example, a patient with a head injury or a chest pain is always allowed to jump the queue regardless of their identity - they've got the priorities right. All the medical staff are trained and educated in all areas in handling the general public, including intersectionality awareness. They wouldn't budge if they saw a woman with a penis. In other words, there is no room for subjectivity in their profession. Plus, they are to comply with their code of conduct, etc. Should they break it there will be a consequence, naturally. My friend is a nurse with 25 years experience. She says 'There is nothing I haven't seen.' I couldn't emphasise enough that they are well-trained medical professionals. I would rather take her words than PJW's words.

@Bay0Wulf "Free at the point of delivery (without financial discrimination)" is the key. Of course, nothing is free; the taxpayers support the NHS. Say if you fall seriously ill or injured while you're visiting England, an NHS ambulance will take you to a nearby NHS A&E hospital. They will try their best to save you regardless of your nationality, gender, religion whatsoever. Your background is irrelevant. That's exactly what happened to my Indian friend last autumn. Sadly, he couldn't make it but his daughter said she couldn't fault the NHS for the high standard of the care and treatment her father received and she agreed to pay the bill which was several thousands pounds. The NHS is far from perfect. It needs a good overhaul. There are medicines and treatment it cannot afford, in which case, private healthcare services are available and some times some people have to resort to cloud funding. In any event, I think I'm right in saying that the people in the UK are not likely to give up on the NHS anytime soon. It is supported by the majority and by the political parties both the left and the right alike.

Hello. I would ask PJW (he is British) if he's got a grandma or granddad who has been on dozens of pills for many years, prescribed absolute fee for them. I would also point out to him that if he ever had an X-ray for his sprained ankle or his broken little finger when he was a little boy, it would've cost his parents several hundreds of pounds, but thanks to the NHS and, the taxpayers, including his parents, who paid in to make that X-ray available to him free at the point of delivery. People who criticise the NHS normally change their tune when their loved ones benefit from it. What actually annoys me is the fact that many foreign tourists come to the UK without travel insurance, become ill or injured, get treated under the NHS, and when they are billed, they simply ignore and leave the UK. The NHS hasn't got time or money to chase those or take them to court. I find it disgraceful.

Comparison with Japanese cultural attitudes is particularly useful. Generally well-written, though plagued by clumsy passages at times. A good source book, a good general intro to the subject. Perhaps especially interesting for brief sections that explore the thinking of some advisors and public figures, like Richard Perleman, who later (well after the 1997 publication of this book) turned out to play important roles in defining the foreign policy of the G.W. Bush administration, particularly in respect to the war in Iraq. I might buy this book. :)

I was hoping that some American folks here could tell me how they see their country but I wasn't getting any. I believe that it's human nature that we compare ourselves with others who are worse off and feel better about ourselves and carry on with the status quo, kidding ourselves that we are doing just fine. I thought it was interesting that the writer was doing the opposite; he criticizes his motherland, which he does not hate by the way, by identifying the problems that need addressing. Kind of honest and constructive? As for the ranking of countries by poverty level, income inequality level, etc. I think you are right that it varies depending on the factors taken into consideration, the calculation method, etc. I'm basically interested in different countries, different people and different ways of thinking.

I think the study focuses on the 20th century. It says that a link between religion and wealth has been known about for decades, as researchers have observed that the poorest nations tend to be highly religious. The article also mentions that tolerance for individual rights actually predicted economic growth even better than secularisation, suggesting that tolerance is the ultimate driver of success for a society, an outcome that makes sense considering its economic benefits. My understanding of the study is that in a secular society, together with modernisation of religions (it is noteworthy that the article does not mention Christianity at all), when people are able to accommodate each other's differences, instead of imposing uncompromising values on each other, not to mention recognising individual liberty and rights, they could improve social mobility and economic well-being together.
