Naomi replies on Apr 1, 2020:
Hello Supra_Librix. You ask big questions! 😂 The UK has no written constitution. https://about-britain.com/institutions/constitution.htm The BBC is no longer impartial. Tabloid press continue to politicise and sensationalise everything. The national press also have a tabloid-like trait nowadays IMO. The media try to be so influential that they don't let readers to form their own opinions. If anything, the media are the ones that constantly try to divide the nation. Yet, British society is less polarised over politics than, say, American society. I think I'm right in saying so. The current Prime Minister and the leader of the Tory Party (right) is Boris Johnson. He used to be described as a buffoon by the media a lot, but in the thick of the coronavirus crisis, he is showing his strengths and I can appreciate that he is trying his best for the nation. The leader of the Labour Party (left) is Jeremy Corbyn. He is about to step down as the leader because he lost at the general election. It is said that he is inspiring to many young people because he is an activist and ideologue. It is also said that because he is an ideologue, he lost the support of traditional Labour members. Nigel Farage may be described as a significantly different type of politician, I guess. He is said to be a populist. He provoked David Cameron, a former PM, to trigger a referendum over Brexit. David Cameron was confident that the nation would vote to remain in the EU but the majority voted to leave the EU. He subsequently resigned. Nigel Farage was a Member of European Parliament for many years but he's never been elected as a Member of UK Parliament. Among the MPs, there is Nicholas Soames, the grandson of the wartime leader Winston Churchill, Hilary Benn, the middle son of veteran Labour MP Tony Benn, Stephen Kinnock, the son of Neil Kinnock, the former Labour leader, etc.
Open mind.

Hello. I am agnostic in a sense that I don't accept or reject the idea of any religious belief. I think that religious belief is a very personal thing, and on that basis, there is nothing for me to judge. You rightly say that the Bible was developed by Christians, in other words by people. In my understanding, the Bible has been interpreted by different people in different ways, hence developing different denominations and sects. These denominations and sects are led by authoritative figures like bishops and priests. Because they are people of authorities, they each consider that their interpretations of the Bible are correct and they have power over their followers, hence creating religious and political conflicts among themselves and among the denominations. It's not so much about the authority of the Bible, but the authority over the Bible I have a problem with. And I would hold the same opinion about any organised religion.

govols comments on Mar 25, 2020:
Naomi, can you offer definitions for your terms conservative and progressive?
Naomi replies on Mar 26, 2020:
@govols I found the following meanings of "liberalism" (apart from the usual political philosophy that promotes civil liberty and individual rights): Willingness to respect or accept behaviour or opinions different from one's own; openness to new ideas. The holding of political views that are socially progressive and promote social welfare. e.g., ‘Brooklyn prides itself on being a great bastion of liberalism and diversity’ Theology: The belief that many traditional beliefs are dispensable, invalidated by modern thought, or liable to change. Especially the last one still sounds applicable to how the American Revolution happened. Traditional, conserved ideas are dispensable and invalidated by modern, radical ideas; when the radical ideas are implemented, it causes chaos but they're eventually accepted and become norm and, conserved. It's a kind of transition from progressive (as in favouring change or innovation) to conservative (as in maintaining what has now become norm), no? So, one could say that the American Revolution was a progressive movement. It's confusing!

Naomi, can you offer definitions for your terms conservative and progressive?
Naomi replies on Mar 25, 2020:
@govols Not sure if I can respond to your request appropriately. I was intrigued by someone's view on the American Revolution as follows: ***** Conservative: Holding to traditional attitudes and values and cautious about change or innovation, typically in relation to politics or religion. Progressive: favouring or implementing social reforms or new liberal ideas. Wouldn't you say the American Revolution implemented social reforms and new liberal ideas? After fifty to a hundred years ideas, innovations, values and attitudes that were once Progressive become traditional… conservatives then abandon all caution in adopting them… and after a while even claim them for their own! “Make America great again” is an attempt to go backwards to a past that never was.. while the rest of the world is moving forward and leaving us behind. Conservatives either want things to remain the same or go back to the way they once were. Did you know that when Teddy Roosevelt ran for President in 1912, he ran as a member of the Progressive Party? That his platform included such Progressive things as campaign finance reform, the vote for women, an 8 hour work day and social insurance? How many conservatives would approve of that platform even today? Yet conservatives still want to claim Theodore Roosevelt as one of theirs. Confederate President Jefferson Davis said that the Confederacy was not revolutionary… they just wanted to keep things the way they were. It was the North that wanted to change everything... It was Progressive to want to end slavery. During the American Revolution.. if you were holding onto your traditional attitudes and values… and were cautious about change or innovation… You would be yelling at those damn Rebels… “Long live the King!” Sorry! I'm afraid you would be siding with the British. ***

@TimTuolomne "In the blitz the non-socialist healthcare system handled 50,000 injuries. Today under a socialist healthcare system they are overwhelmed at 2000." what is your information source? In any event, perhaps you're confusing socialism with communitarianism, or even simpler, community spirit... It is ironic that COVID-19 is uniting individuals and the communities to which they belong in the UK. They've started communicating with each other better and looking after each other better. Supermarkets have set hours specifically for the elderly and medical staff who came off their shifts to shop in a relaxed manner. Hotels are offering rooms absolutely free for the homeless for protection, and medical staff who wish to save time and energy on travelling back and forth between their homes and workplaces. Restaurants are offering free food for key workers like carers. This is community spirit and not much to do with socialism which is a political and economic theory.

Hello. I take your point. I think that hitting the right balance is important. Because your country needs to establish a better welfare system, education system, infrastructure, etc. doesn't mean that no money should be injected in for scientific and medical research at the same time. I have friends in Mumbai, and they tell me how corrupt the Indian government is. Is there anyway you can tell if the Indian government allocates foreign aid to different sectors fairly for the people who really need it in India, and not lining the pockets of greedy, corrupt politicians? There is a huge gulf between the rich and the poor in your country. I visited Mumbai once and it was quite a sight to see that slums were concentrated among high-rise buildings. Hello CodeBuster. Spanish flu claimed some 50 million lives. OK. it was more than 100 years ago, and we have better technology, facilities and medicines now, but what hasn't changed is the fact that viruses like H1N1 and SARS are airborne. They spread through the air. You don't need to be kissed or hugged in order to become infected. Airborne viruses linger for a longer period of time than those spread by droplets and can also be spread in air conditioning and ventilation systems. They enter our bodies through the eyes, nose or mouth. With COVID-19, the incubation time varies roughly from 2 to 14 days, plus, you may not even have clear symptoms when you become contagious. Wearing a mask and gloves certainly help but does not give you 100% protection. Moreover, there are people who revel and ignore guidelines like social-distancing. Those people are not gonna bother with wearing masks and gloves either. They continue to go out and congregate at public spaces. I was condemning those who are putting others at risk by behaving irresponsibly.

Say it is correct that Democrats are playing the racist card on the adjective "Chinese", aren't you giving them more ammunition by choosing to say "Chinese virus" yourself? Additionally, I always have a problem with the "it's just a word" argument. Word matters. That is why the Bible matters, Shakespeare matters, the Constitution matters, and so on so forth. Words carry not only meanings but effects that play on people's minds, good or bad, in certain contexts. Ignoring that and to say they are just words is nonsensical to me.
