I may sound like I'm defending HighQ but HighQ is an internet troll (he is probably trolling elsewhere) and he knows what he is doing - its his shtick. I could manage that. And believe it or not, some actually enjoyed jousting with him. But Cavett was something else... His/her behaviour was pathological and creepy. I had to block Cavett when it became apparent that he/she started targeting me and spreading the word that I refuse to denounce Muslim gang rape. Where did that come from? 🙄 He/she was unhinged IMHO. Marie... if she didn't have a foul mouth, she could've got her views across better, I think. And you think you're the next to go? What have you done? (Only joking) 😂

Hello, and thank you for your advice. I also find the origins of words interesting, and the Oxford Dictionary is my favourite. I would also point out that language evolves all the time, and that even when a word is defined precisely, the interpretation of it can still vary from person to person. Meanwhile, context is another important factor to consider. I find language very organic and fluid. If you have a thought on the original question, please let me know.

With regard to the notion that religion, which provides a centre around which society revolves, is adaptive, I found the following statement which seems to provide a similar view. "Religion is a system of emotionally binding beliefs and practices in which a society implicitly negotiates through prayer and sacrifice with supernatural agents, securing from them commands that compel members, through fear of divine punishment, to subordinate their interests to the common good." - Nicholas Wade I'm inclined to think that religion evolves as society evolves; it evolves as culture evolves; it evolves as everything human does. However, your notion and the above statement seem to suggest that religion leads society and its members. If religion is adaptive, i.e., it can change by itself, what would cause it to change so that society revolves around it accordingly, I wonder?

@waynus I guess understanding of religious texts like the Bible and the Quran involves a lot of subjectivity and one most likely has to rely on translations of those texts, which also involve not only translators' comprehension and linguistic skills but also their personal interpretations of the texts. Hello. There are gay Muslims in the UK, and I would assume that there are some in Canada, too (?) They're gay but they still believe in Islam, so I assume that they have their own interpretation of Islam so that their existence as gay is allowed. Fundamental Muslims will not approve of homosexuality, though. To them, gay Muslims are not real Muslims. Similarly, I believe that fundamental Christians do not approve of gay bishops, or female bishops for that matter; they are not real bishops. There are different denominations and sects, although they believe in the same god. Why do they go separate ways or even against one another, I wonder...? Is that because religion can fluidly change, i.e., is adaptive, for and against its believers?

Hello. Considering that there are different Christian denominations, there are different Buddhist sects, etc., do you think it is down to different interpretations of teaching of a religion rather than the religion being adaptive (i.e., capable of changing by itself)? For example, the words in the Bible cannot be changed as it is a work of literature, yet there are different denominations; Jehovah's Witnesses, for example, don't believe in Christmas, etc.

Hello. If I can interpret the original question as "Can religion change - from generation to generation, and/or as culture evolves?", something like that, then I would also say yes, religion can change, or as you say, it has to. Having said that, considering that the Bible, for example, is a work of literature, and it is impossible to change the words that are written in it, I would say it is different interpretations that change Christianity than the religion changing by itself. What do you think? Incidentally, my first language... it's a secret. 😏

Thank you. I've never thought that way: I've always assumed that if anyone is kept uninformed, that's ordinary citizens. After the Brexit referendum result to leave the EU, by a very narrow margin, three and a half years ago, the rhetoric that the Leave voters didn't know what they were voting for (i.e., uninformed if not ill-informed) was played time and time again. Many took it as patronising. I think when the uninformed make up the majority, a wrong decision and a wrong leader can be selected. The word "useful idiots" comes to mind.

Quite beautiful. Thank you for posting this. My Latin is a bit rusty but it seemed to me the English was not always a literal translation. I found that interesting too.

Happy New Year. I think I'm right in saying that the "flavour" of the original always gets lost in the process of translation.

Happy New Year! The overuse of fireworks has been creating problems in the UK, i.e., traumatising war veterans with PTDS, children with autism, livestock, pets, etc. Drone displays could be a good alternative. I still love fire displays, though.

Naomi replies on Dec 31, 2019:
@Seriousreason Although I'm not turning a blind eye to it, I think that a case like this is so unusual that it gets picked up by the media and the media project a notion that this is happening all over the world. It's just not true. It's misleading. And we all get outraged by something that is not taking root. We mustn't. I don't know what people are like in New Zealand, but the people in the UK are socially conservative, both the Tory and Labour Party supporters alike. One of the reasons why Corbyn's Labour Party suffered the massive defeat at the general election is because they put so much focus on identity politics, and the voters weren't buying into it. I believe that real people know real life, and they are not likely to give up the well-established values important to them for ideologies. Happy New Year to you, too.

Naomi replies on Dec 30, 2019:
@Seriousreason I don't feel I have to do anything to fight it. I'm sure that most people instinctively know that what they're doing goes against nature and human nature. I see it as just a trend. It is so unnatural and abnormal that it can't last. It'll die down, or they'll die out. In my community, I don't know anyone like those in the meme. I think the media give the impression that LGBTQ people are spreading like locusts or something like that and I don't think that is the case at all. I don't have stats though. We mustn't talk about it as if this is normal or as if this trend is unstoppable. I would like to believe that most people have an instinctive reaction that this is not natural. This is nothing to do with the left or the right, IMO. This kind of trend goes right against human nature, and we, as a species, cannot survive this way, and that's enough for me to know.
