A friend in Japan reminded me that the 74th Hiroshima Peace Memorial Ceremony was held today.

Interesting post and you seem to have stirred the pot... It's educational though and I think all points are valid. To your point... How should you present the facts to your children, I think it depends on how old they are. Facts are facts. The younger they are, the less you need to go into detail ...
Naomi replies on Aug 7, 2019:
Hello there. "You seem to have stirred the pot..." Not on purpose - honest! Lol I go along with your view. Plus, in my opinion, how you can present "unpleasant" past events objectively without judging depends on how old those events are and how personally and emotionally you're involved in them. To the British gentleman I mention in the thread, what happened to his father during the war is still a fresh memory, and his hatred towards the Japanese is still raw, several decades on! Slavery is still a huge topic in your country. Do some Germans still feel a little uncomfortable to talk abut their Nazi past? How is the attempt to systematically exterminate indigenous people perceived by the Australian? The list goes on. I still think it is important that we're able to tell our children and grandchildren historical facts without judging, as appropriate, although I appreciate that it can be hard, and to encourage them to learn from reliable sources. Otherwise there is always the risk of passing hate, prejudice, that sort of things to the next generations.

Hello Oxfret, Ah, emotions, emotions! A few years ago, a Japan Day (an introduction to Japanese culture) was held at the guildhall (community centre) in my town. A gentleman stopped by the front door and started shaking. Everybody thought he was going to have a seizure. He wasn't; he was shaking with anger. He was staring at the Japanese flag that was displayed on the front wall. He murmured that he never thought he would see the "enemy's flag" in his hometown. Apparently, his father was killed by the Japanese during the war. Several decades later, his anger and hatred towards the Japanese was still very raw. I simply couldn't comprehend... He would never be able to tell his children and grandchildren about the war objectively... it's profound.

Hello. I take your point with regard to the entitlement to the equal protection of the law. As for enforcing laws, do you think that the police, as a law-enforcement body, are implicitly biased to protected groups? While laws are impartial, if law-enforcers fail to be impartial, that'll be a violation of the equal protection law.

Sounds like fun. Lucky you! I live in Plymouth - too far away to enjoy spectacles at Speakers' Corner often. A peculiarly British bastion of free speech, and I like it. :) When face-to-face debates take place in a public space like Speakers' Corner, i.e., the real world rather than the virtual world, people behave more like "real" people than like "avatars". I think it's good that people are mindful that they debate in a civilised and lawful manner (the police are present at Speakers' Corner - naturally), and that shouldn't interfere with freedom of speech. Incidentally, I don't know any individual cases where ordinary people got fired, attacked or imprisoned as a result of making speeches. Do you?

You're welcome. Because there was a huge speculation that the establishment tried to get TR killed last time he was in prison (thanks to one particular prison officer who leaked the plot to TR so that he could take the initiative), if he was killed while in prison this time, the speculation would become a belief, if not truth. Maybe that's why he was isolated straight away, although he didn't request it, to ensure that his life is not at risk (basically the government is covering its backside). I don't agree with everything TR does or says, but it very much appears that the establishment is trying to silence him at all costs, which I find difficult to justify...

'On the other hand if a government really has pushed too far and riots break out, with sufficient perseverance they could theoretically topple the government or bring them to the table.' Theoretically - exactly, and it doesn't seem practical enough. Look at the yellow vest protest in Paris. It's been going on for almost 40 weeks now, yet, they don't seem to be getting anywhere. Macron has never taken the protesters seriously, and the media have lost interest ages ago. Then, I have to ask "What is the point?" Nobody seems to be benefiting from it. It must be very bad for the local economy in Paris, for example. Because I have a great deal of sympathy with them, I find it frustrating that they're not achieving anything.

I would rather put an emphasis on positive, constructive attitude; for example, Japanese and Korean football (soccer) fans cheered side by side at the World Cup when it was held in Japan.

Hello DrN1, ObiRonMoldy and FaithJones, Same here. There is nothing wrong with being left-ish and right-ish at the same time. It proves that you have the ability to think critically and objectively from multiple angles. Many seem to have very polarised views, or seem oversensitive, and if you happen to have different opinions from theirs, or make criticism of whatever they like or believe, you may get nasty comebacks. There is one particular individual who, once he found that I'm an immigrant in England, "sent a message" to tell me to go back to my own country. He is also so foul-mouthed (he justifies his choice of words in the name of free speech) that I (and some others, I believe) reported him to the admin, and guess what - he is still here. He is a nasty person underneath. Incidentally,I've actually read "About Us" with regard to abusive behaviour, but the rules clearly have no effect whatsoever. Ah well, different members are here for different reasons, I guess. If they are here because they fancy picking up fights, having a good moan, etc., so be it, too trivial to be bothered with, although such reasons clearly defeat the good intention of developing this site. Additionally, I acknowledge a "birds of a feather" nature of humans. While we would like to keep a critical eye on echo-chamber and confirmation-bias behaviour, it is after all a natural human behaviour, wouldn't you say?

I find it interesting that each state of the U.S. is run like a mini country; the type of tax and it's amount, among other things, vary from state to state, and people are therefore free to move from one state to another for conditions that suit them better. Neither of too much socialistic thinking (high taxation) and too much individualistic thinking (I have a good life, thank you very much) is good in my opinion. I learned that among the Palestinians who were systematically targeted and expelled by Israeli forces during the 1948 Nakbathe were Christians, and today, they are denied access to Jerusalem by the Zionist government. Israel-Palestine conflict is generally perceived as Judeo-Christian vs Muslim, and this perception excludes the existence of the Palestinian Christians who are caught up in the middle of it all - because they don't fit in the narrative...? Hello acthenpens, I've been thinking... You're right about whatever is run by the state, i.e., supported by tax payers, and therefore is available to those who contribute (tax payers) is an extension of the co-op principle, which is fair. But is it OK to simply say that one is not entitled to the service to which one doesn't contribute. For example, I have a neighbour who has always been a self-employed window cleaner, and that's the only thing he can do well. He's in his 60s and he has arthritis in his both knees, but he can't afford to retire. I very much doubt that he's ever paid tax because he earns so little, yet I know that he is not on any benefit; his pride goes against becoming a charity case. While he definitely needs medical attention for his knees, plus he is definitely not a freeloader, is it still unfair that he receives the medical treatment he needs free under the NHS? Of course, it is impossible to pinpoint who is a freeloader and who is not, but a communitarian part of me says that if I'm doing well with my life, I should be able to help others in my community. What do you think? Incidentally, I'm against grammar schools. It creates a two-tier system in my opinion. I think comprehensive schools should be brought back together with streaming. Mixed ability is a fancy idea where brighter ones are supposed to bring up less bright ones, but it has been proven time and time again that it has the opposite effect. I don't see anything wrong with bright ones being allowed to sit in the top class regardless of the background. I believe that children know who is bright and who is not among themselves anyway as well as being capable of accepting that as a fact. I've just realised that I sound like a leftist! I'm not always aware if I'm thinking in the left mode or in the right mode. I enjoy decent discussions like this. Thank you for the opportunity. x

Hello there. Enjoying the sunshine up there? Impartiality - exactly! In my opinion, the politicisation of the police is terribly wrong. Since I made this post, I've bee in touch with my MP. He took a great deal of sympathy and is now taking this up with the Police and Crime Commissioner. So, wait and see.
