Polarization, lack of nuance, identity politics, and especially contradiction! - these qualities are the definitive description of "political culture" period - not unique to America at all. Literally applies to all Countries.
Naomi replies on Jun 23, 2019:
With all due respect, I'm not sure what your point is... sorry to be dumb. Not sure if you actually watched the video but it is simply about a British journalist making an observation by interviewing an American YouTuber who provides his insightful views about American politics. I don't see anything wrong with that, do you? I would happily watch a video like this about any country's political culture. I find it interesting. Incidentally, because you asked me to point out a country in the East where identity politics is not exercised, I mentioned China. China officially recognizes 55 ethnic minority groups within the country in addition to the Han majority. So, it is not the case that China, among other similar countries, has almost zero ethnic diversity. There are also Muslims and Christians living in China but they are persecuted by the Chinese government; churches are being closed down and Muslims are imprisoned and treated worse than animals. Identity politics means "a tendency for people of a particular religion, race, social background, etc., to form exclusive political alliances, moving away from traditional broad-based party politics". I do not believe it is possible for any ethnic minority group or minor religious group to form a political alliance, let alone expressing views against the state or exercising identity politics, in a country like China (unless they risk their lives for their principles).

The British are class-conscious, generally speaking, so it would not be strange that TR is judged by his class, accent or perceptions of his background, or anyone for that matter. Don't you normally manage to get a fairly good idea about someone based on those factors? But at the end of the day, how well you present yourself matters, in my opinion, especially if you want your views to be taken seriously. Hence, TR has millions of supporters who are mostly ordinary decent people - they can relate themselves to him. It is however also true that TR is a divisive figure because what he stands for - as you know, he is a single-issue man.

@dmatic, @WilyRickWiles So, as Bolton so openly calls for military strikes against Iran, he must have a cunning plan, surely. Naomi replies on Jun 17, 2019:
Hello there. "There are forces out there that crave power, dominance, and wealth." Very true, and that's human nature, unfortunately. And if we don't control it, it will grow and grow until it becomes monstrous. We're social animals, so we form a group and then we need leadership so there will be hierarchy... the ultimate form is then a government. But it shouldn't be driven by negative force like anger, greed, hate, etc.. You're right about corruption, too. It is too naive to think that there are governments that are not corrupt. That voting right is all citizens have got is a little frustrating sometimes. I've been following the protests in Hong Kong. Some 2 million people were out on streets yesterday to protest against the Chinese government.Thatcher and Zhao Ziyang signed a convention committing Britain to return Hong Kong to China in 1997 in return for terms guaranteeing a 50-year extension of its capitalist system. But Chinese communism has gradually been eroding the liberty of Hongkongers. Also, the British government is in a mess; in the middle of Brexit chaos, May announced her resignation and a leadership contest is now on - crazy. Governments and politicians are supposed to serve citizens but they always get stuck in the political bubble and become too busy serving themselves to remember the people they're representing. Are there any conviction politicians left? Enough ranting. Lol Thank you for your input.

Well, Thatcher and Zhao Ziyang signed the convention committing Britain to return Hong Kong to China in 1997 in return for terms guaranteeing a 50-year extension of its capitalist system, so... it is a contract, i.e., a legal document. What puzzles me, Bay0Wulf, is that China is a UN member, but the UN has been quiet (and the UK government; some British politicians commented on the protests but that's it). Perhaps, it is difficult to prove that China is actually doing anything illegally, i.e. a violation of the agreement. The thing is, protest marches aren't all that effective, are they? Yellow vests (gilet jaunes) for example. They've just had the 30th weekends or something but so far they've made no progress. I was watching a journalist talking about gilet jaunes on YouTube last night. He's been closely following them and according to him, the French government is not taking them seriously, people in France are not interested, nor are the media... so, what's the point? You're very kind govols. I was 13 when I attended my first English lesson, and I loved it. Ever since, I've never stopped learning it. I find it is a complicated language; the more I learn, the harder it seems to get. Lol There's nothing wrong with being left or right, by the way. I get on with both sides. I'm just not conscious if I'm thinking in the left mode or the right mode, and if anyone gets irritated by that, well, don't hang about. Lol Anyway, have a nice evening. (It's nearly my bedtime in England.)

Yes, you're right. I like it when different people come on to contribute their views. I find them all interesting. Many are so well-read and knowledgeable. I feel kind of embarrassed, thinking where the hell have I been?!. Lol I don't like it when top contributors kind of hijack threads, perhaps unintentionally, though. I was bothered when one member kept speculating whether I was left or right. I don't always know whether I'm thinking in the left mode or in the right mode. It doesn't bother me anyway. I've read some of his comments and he seems obsessed with this left-right thing. He brings it up even when a topic is nothing to do with politics. English isn't my mother tongue, and he suggested that I should discuss topics in my native language. Where? Here? Of course that's impossible. So what was he suggesting? Trying to oust me? Ah well, I shouldn't worry. I've got better things to think about. Thanks for your comment.

Hello. Are you a novelist? I wish I had your writing skills. May I ask you a question? I'm aware that there are some intellectuals like Bret Weinstein and his fellow professors and lecturers who are left-leaning (BW publicly says he is progressive left) and are fighting postmodernists as hard as right-leaning intellectuals like Jordan Peterson. Do you think when we talk of the left, we are generally referring them to postmodernists and those indoctrinated by them? Do you think we should therefore separate them from the other kind of left-wingers (reasonable ones like BW and his fellows)?

He drank a whole bottle of vinegar and made himself sick so that he didn't have to join the services. He was heavily criticised and called a coward and a traitor. What he did sounds silly, but he was sticking to his guns and refused to take part in the war. Maybe he was so young and naive that he thought he could stop the war or change the world; he thought he and his fellow activists were holding their nation together. When others thought he was unpatriotic, he actually loved his country very much. He just had a very different way to express his patriotism. That's what my father (my uncle's brother) told me. Patriotism is a peculiar thing.
