How about the Big Bounce instead of the Big Bang?
Crikey comments on Jun 12, 2020:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Bounce I was wrong. The Big Bounce hypothesis has been around for a century or so, was out of favour for some time but is recently being reconsidered. It's also not necessarily "Big Bounce instead of Big Bang". You can have both. My limited understanding ...
Naomi replies on Jun 12, 2020:
Hello Crikey. Thanks for the loads of info! The most common argument against the big bang theory is that if it was like a spring that was so compressed that it eventually sprang back and exploded, what was compressing the spring in the first place? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A3bZdjVFFRQ&t=2s I guess we'll never find out, but interesting to ponder on. :)
Morality is older than religion - Frans de Waal: Morality Without Religion - YouTube
govols comments on Jun 11, 2020:
I disagree. The ancients had religion so tightly woven into cultural expectations that that we with exposure to secular ideas simply don't recognize that there used to never be religion, but only the way things were. Religion wasn't A thing; it was THE thing.
Naomi replies on Jun 11, 2020:
Hello @govols, @Hanno, I have to question if intelligent animals really have the sense of right and wrong or good and bad (that's what morality is in simple terms) when they show behaviours such as cooperating, reconciling, empathising, etc. Could these behaviours be more like instinctive, as means of survival, rather than by reasoning? If so, could we really call them moral behaviour? I don't know. Meanwhile, I find it hard to imagine that humans, say 50,000 years ago, lived together, bound by a religious belief without language. Developing a language is one of the first steps into civilisation. Arriving at the view of existence of the supernatural and worshipping it and communicating with it requires a certain degree of sophistication in thinking and communication.
How about the Big Bounce instead of the Big Bang?
govols comments on Jun 11, 2020:
The article mentioned a problem with big bang and some of the theory solutions being untestable, but then ignores the same issue for the bounce. It's still interesting, but I'm not sure how much confidence we'll ever really have in our theories of the infinite or infinitesimal. The mysteries abound.

And don't assume that the problems they have with the police in America are also everyone else's problems. America simply does not represent the rest of the world. Plus, you cannot have an insight into things you don't know well enough. Read my comment again - CAREFULLY. It is simply a summary of the articles I read. Where does it contain my opinion? If you have any OBJECTIVE opinion on Camden's case, let me know. And @Header, I'm surprised you agree with vanger. I would've thought you know me well enough by now. 🙄 And @johonlondon, why are you angry about Camden's case? Surely, you know more about it than I read. Tell me. I'm curious, if that's OK.

British police officers are each required to take an "oath of impartiality", meaning that as public servants and low enforcement officers, they must serve and protect every single citizen "equally in the eyes of the law", i.e., they must not be political biased (at least when they are in their uniforms). Naomi replies on Jun 2, 2020:
@SupraLibrix, @Crikey "What is secular morality?" I think I'm right in saying that we are all born into a certain kind of society - it can be a religious society or a secular society. Either way, it's not our choice. Religious or secular, society should function well when the people in it respect laws and principles that are formed based on shared values while tolerating each other's difference. Whatever has been established in that society, it's already there when we are born, and that surely includes a well-established set of moral values, religious or secular. I would also add that basic moral values, such as be kind to each other, not to steal, not to deceive, not to hurt, etc. are universal.

@SupraLibrix @JacksonNought, @SupraLibrix Who is talking about dismissing the Jewish ideology? What about Christian ideology or Buddhism ideology? The Western culture and civilisation have been developed on Judaeo-Christianity and the East Asian culture and civilisation have been developed on Buddhism, roughly speaking. You cannot just simply dismiss those core ideologies. I read or heard somewhere that when Christianity arrived in Japan in the 17th century, it was regarded as indoctrination and was banned because it was seen as a threat that would destroy the Japanese values that were established on Buddhist (and Shinto) ideology. Basically, a "political" conflict was created between the two ideologies. A lot was going on not only on the western side of the globe but elsewhere in the world for centuries. And talking of values, I think I'm right in saying that common rules and regulations are basically formed based on common values that are shared by all people of the same society, so, yes, it's good to respect such common rules and regulations.

Naomi replies on Jun 2, 2020:
@SupraLibrix, @JacksonNought I see myself agnostic; I don't have a very strong, fixed view on whether or not god(s) exists. Like I said, I grew up in a secular environment, so my moral values were initially developed based on what decent adults, like my parents, grandparents and school teachers, told me as to what was right and what was wrong, and then I suppose I developed my own moral compass as I accumulated more knowledge, experience, that sort of things. What I can say for sure is that my life has been nothing to do with religious teaching such as the Ten Commandments. Incidentally, I find it a little silly to generalise what atheists are like or what Christians are like. It's too broad and shallow. For example, I've learned recently that not all atheists are free-will skeptic (but determinists are). In other words, not all atheists are the same, like not all Christians are the same.

I've come to the conclusion some time ago, regrettably, that this site, slug, whatever, is like any other social media sites. We have many rude members here, probably because they were banned from FB, etc., in the first place and they found a haven here... so it seems. I was also made aware some time ago that this site, slug.com, agnostic.com. humanist.com (and possibly more) have all been created by the same person/team. Hello. One might say "If monogamy is the norm (by law), isn't the entire society "indoctrinated" into monogamy?" We also take on the cultural values we were brought to believe, whatever they may be. Interestingly, while I thought that polygamy wasn't a biblical idea, I came across a Christian who argues: The Christian Scriptures waffle on this idea, i.e. 1 Timothy 3:2, English Standard Version says:"Therefore an overseer [bishop in other translations] must be above reproach, the husband of one wife[.]" This does not say that men lower in the church hierarchy cannot have more than one wife. Hello. What is normal is constantly changing, and intimate relationships come in different forms nowadays. Marriage is a legal contract, but there are many couples (including the couple next door to me) who are not married but have children, and they're happy as family units. Not sure how financial matters such as tax and pension work for them, though. In the UK, polygamy is illegal, but some people practise it by their religion. Things become complicated, especially, when they lack financial support for their own children, at which point the government has to come to the rescue by providing benefits and allowances. If you are a tax payer, you have to wonder although you understand that the welfare of children is important, why you must support poly parents who go against the law in the first place while you are a good law-abiding citizen adhering to monogamy. It becomes the mockery of the law, doesn't it?
So, I was wondering.

Hello. The article regarding Utah and the LDS you posted a few days ago actually got me thinking. Lol It seems correct that polygamy is associated with abuse against women and children - historically and culturally. But then, polygamy refers to one man with multiple wives. What about polyandry, i.e., one woman with multiple husbands? Would that create just as much as domestic abuse? (It sounds useful in terms of getting manual chores done. Lol) I've learned a little about LDS-style abuse. Decriminalisation of polygamy might open the door for thousands of people to seek help and protection from domestic abusers and paedophiles, and might straighten up tax/benefit-related matters.
So, I was wondering.
