Naomi replies on Mar 9, 2021:
@bastion Yeah, there is that tendency. Impressionable - that's a good word. Yesterday, many right-wingers liked the news that Switzerland voted for a legal ban on full facial covering in public, and because the right-leaning media translated "full facial covering" to a "ban on the burka or niqab worn by Muslim women", right-wingers were delighted. I don't know how they can support such an authoritarian approach and advocate civil liberty at the same time. They are impressionable indeed and don't seem to realise that they're contradictory to themselves.

Hello there. I hear you. At many stores in England, you're kindly asked to look decent while you shop, i.e. if you walk in a store looking like you're at the beach, you will certainly be asked to leave, and that's not because it is against the law; that's because it is a policy of that store. I think that is the right approach. Someone else posted the same news yesterday and this person was delighted by the news, wishing the US had the same ban. A few agreed with him, yet they are right-wingers. Not sure how they, civil liberty advocates, are OK with such an authoritarian approach. Double standard. Well, it's hard to be consistent, I guess. I think that this is a typical case of damned if you do (publish the book), damned if you don't.
Naomi replies on Mar 8, 2021:
@Alysandir I read somewhere that Dr. Seuss cleverly incorporated his political views in his children's books, which he apparently knew were daring and controversial. I'm thinking of Mary Whitehouse. I watched a documentary about her a long time ago. She was a British teacher and also a conservative activist. She strongly criticised TV for liberalising society by generating bad language, showing sex scenes, etc. She was a unique public personality, and apparently in those days (1960s? 1970s?), she wasn't accused of undermining free speech. It was quite opposite - she was regarded as a guardian of morals. In other words, regardless of how times may have changed, ethics, or the business of moral philosophy has always been going on. Anyway, many people may not realise that Dr Seuss Enterprises, the publisher of his books, was founded by his family. I'm thinking that if I was, say, his granddaughter and some of his books were perceived controversial in the modern social, ethical context, I might choose not to publish those books not because I agree that the books are politically incorrect but because I want to protect my grandfather's good name. But then, I would probably be accused of not publishing the books by those who champion free speech. Hence, damned if I do, damned if I don't.

Naomi replies on Mar 8, 2021:
Hello there. While media are keen to imply that this is a legal ban on wearing the burqa or the niqab, the measure will outlaw "full facial covering in public places" like restaurants, sports stadiums, public transport or simply walking in the street. Like you say, this includes wearing a balaclava when playing sports on a cold day, like skiing, wearing a hat, a COVID mask and a pair of glasses together, wearing a mask at a carnival, etc., etc. The only good thing about this legal ban I can think of right now is that rioters with fully covered faces will be arrested immediately for full facial covering is now a crime. Hello. Thanks for the explanation. The concept of having to live on tips by one's customers instead of living on decent wages by one's employer is beyond me to be honest. How about personal allowance? We have a personal allowance system in the UK in which you don't pay tax on the entire amount of your income; you pay tax on the remaining amount after deducting your personal allowance from the income amount. Personal allowance is a sum of money granted by the government to cover your personal expenses or for your personal use.

Naomi replies on Mar 6, 2021:
@tracycoyle Of course, we cannot deny biological and innate gender-specific characteristics, but I can kind of understand the conceptualization of gender in the social context, for example, in terms of male and female roles. In this day and age, there are still some places where male and female roles are so separated in a traditional sense that people think that education is wasted on women. And such a typical old-fashioned view changes as society evolves. I think that some theories are interesting but are best remain as theories and are never to be put into practice, and I think that Butler's theory is one such theory.

If two people insist that what they believe is the truth and never bother finding facts to support their "truth", they just go in parallel with no intention of even acknowledging each other's point. They're not interested in learning anything from each other. In other words, a waste of time. Meanwhile, everybody has "the right to speak" and they also have "the right to be heard". So, we have to respect that and one should never impose one's opinion on others. Do you have a family, friends, anyone you can trust in the real world? If you want precise answers to your why question, you'll have to find "insiders"! All joking aside, it bears noting that 70,000 years ago it is theorized that there were around 5000 breeding pair of humans IN THE WHOLE WORLD. This is great background for a story about how all of humanity arouse from few, maybe even one, pair of humans.

@adriaan23 I respectfully disagree... There are facts and there are people of different generations, different genders, different heritage. etc., who perceive those facts in different ways. It would be very strange if everyone shared exactly the same perspective about everything. I also believe that throughout the entire human history, we have always had different abilities to destroy ourselves, and we survived every time. I don't agree with wokeism, postmodernism, whatever you call it. I'm hoping that this is just a phase we're going through. I don't believe that this ideology can be materialised because it is so against the human nature. And please try not to patronise young people; being young and therefore being hopeful and ambitious for their futures is not the same as indulging fantasies.

@RobBlair You'll have to dig up old articles from 2015, which will take some time. My understanding of radicalisation is that it is the process by which a person or a group of people comes to firmly hold extreme overvalued beliefs, and such beliefs are the motive behind terrorist acts, mass shootings, etc. Cults, for example, act on people's minds the same way as terrorism, e.g., the "revolutionary suicide" in Jonestown many years ago. So, in this regard, maybe it's not so much about going through a transition from one culture to another... Basically, I don't know. Lol

Hello Rob, I don't know legal complications, but when Shamima and the other two girls were lured by an ISIS member (I seem to remember that was a woman), they were teens. They stole jewellery, etc. from their parents and secretly left London to join ISIS. The police at that time said the girls wouldn't face terrorist charges because they were minors. Shamima is now 21. Not sure about the direct connection between radicalisation and multiculturalism. While I don't think that multiculturalism works, radicalisation and other influences on vulnerable minds can be easily done via social media; geography is irrelevant.

Hello Grandpa, I'm not against the "idea" of minimum wages, not in terms of equity but in terms of making sure that everyone is above the poverty line, which can only be a good thing. There are people who are "working poor" in England. They often have two or three jobs yet they still fall below the poverty line. That can't be right. Modern slavery is also a problem. Equal job opportunity is also a nice idea but it assumes that there are abundant job opportunities for everyone to choose from, which is hardly the case. Of course, in order for employers to be able to provide their employees with a minimum wage, they have to make sure that their businesses are making a lot of profit, expanding, creating more jobs, etc., etc. It therefore assumes that the economy is going strong. So, IMO, it's not like that the government tells businesses how much they must pay their employees; it's more like the government and businesses must work together to analyse the economic cycle, which affects everyone's life after all, and determine how much minimum wage should be, and the minimum wage should be revised annually, to increase or decrease, according to the business and economic circumstances. I'm sure there is a whole bunch of stuff that needs to be taken into consideration. It's complicated!!!

Lol You're right that there are still many things we don't know about marijuana. Experts say that more research is needed. There are some things that are generally agreed upon (unfortunately cons) like marijuana carries a risk of abuse and addiction, and it impairs one's cognitive ability. Also, someone I know actually caused an accident a few years ago while he was driving high on marijuana. Luckily, he didn't hurt anyone but himself; he shattered one of his legs very badly. As for medical use, if my doctor prescribes me marijuana for therapeutic purposes, I will probably trust her and take it. @Bay0Wulf You're missing the point. Everybody else here is talking about inventions and innovations; we are not talking about conventional materials. Like jaymaron (he is a physicist BTW) and I are saying in the thread, the physical and mechanical properties of plastic are already in the knowledge of experts. Apart from these properties, like density, flexibility, tensile strength, etc. of plastic, issues related to toxicity, chemical composition, flammability, etc, of plastic have also been examined and addressed by experts, hence introduction of new resin compositions, new manufacturing methods, etc. (not to mention in consideration of compliance with the current laws, regulations and standards, both domestic and international), which are potentially patentable.

Hello. "She did not invent that." If you take the word "invent" literally, probably you're right, but modern inventions are more like innovations. There may still be a tiny room for creating something completely new but so-called inventions nowadays are more like improving something that is already established by new features, which can be new functions, new compositions, new methodologies, etc. If you have a patent-pending product, I believe you know what I mean. Incidentally, my job is related to examining and producing written opinions on patent applications. There is a road connecting Denmark and Sweden (I can't think of its name right now) which is completely made of plastic waste. India, and other less-developed countries are surprisingly creative in reusing old unwanted materials (waste).
