Like it or not, China is rising: US Debt to China: How Much, Reasons, What Could Happen
Bay0Wulf comments on Nov 28, 2019:
Uhm ... outside of finding an interesting title and an article that articulated what you wanted to hear ... what did you find? Did you look into who “the Balance” is? Do you know ... read enough ... to realize that it’s a Left Slanted Banking Website devoted to quietly promoting themselves ...
Naomi replies on Nov 28, 2019:
I'm not sure what point you're trying to make...? If you say that The Balance is a left-leaning media source, so be it. Does that mean the article I posted is a lie? I'm not interested in political bias, to be honest, so I have no intention of objecting to your comment. BUT, you'll have to convince me that the article I posted is fake news by the left. As you know, I'm open-minded, so provide me with some references, please?

@Brainiac I think that different countries have their own medical research groups to come up with their own conclusions as to which drug/treatment is safe, etc. base on their analyses and standards. With regard to drug prices, I would say that pharmaceutical patent abuse (monopolisation) is a global problem and should be addressed. At least the UK NHS is transparent with prices (including admitting that some drugs are too expensive for them to afford) and they don't medicate/treat patients for profit.

Do you think it is possible to leave it behind, let alone erasing it? "When in Rome" means adaptability to me. Homogeneity means the quality or state of being all the same or all of the same kind, and homogeneous means consisting of things or people that are all the same or all of the same type. Talking of censorship (which I don't think the poster meant by his post), when I post something I sincerely want to talk about and if it is met by someone using colourful language (because this person has no intention of engaging in a civil conversation) and I feel discouraged from continuing with the conversation, would you say that this person has deprived me of free speech by shutting down the conversation? In that case, do you think that such behaviour (using colourful language) has a similar effect to censorship? Incidentally, English is not my first language, so when it comes to colourful language, I'm no match for you. 😒

Is it alright to allow ourselves to go a little over the top because Christmas is a very special time of the year? It's more like they act in response to the actions taken by the people at the top, e.g., riots against their governments. Before this video, Prof. Roth explains Hegelianism, and a few lectures before that, he talks about Kant and Rousseau. I'm just learning their philosophical ideas as academic topics, because I only skimmed the surface of philosophy when I was in college. govols and DrN1 understand what I'm up to. Hello ScottforKing. Marxism was "innovated" in different ways, terrible ways. That's why many people talk about him in a very negative way. If he was still around, he might've said "that's not what I meant!". The description of him as "the father of communism" is so well-known that people talk of him as if he led the communist states in the 20th century. No, he did not. I am separating myself from that general notion about him. Some people can't seem to, which is a shame. I am learning about thinkers and their ideas from the academic point of view along the timeline from enlightenment to postmodernism. I like this professor because he has no political orientation. He delivers what he delivers as academic topics.

Hello. I was thinking in very simple terms. In the UK, we have multiple tax rates basically depending on how much you earn. In simple terms, the basic income tax rate is 20%, and you could be taxed as much as 40% if you're very rich (I'll have to check the details, or other Brits here could help me), and I never understand why not just a flat rate for everyone. Say, you're a very successful business man and make loads of money, and if you have to pay 40% income tax instead of 20% income tax, it's like you're punished for being successful... no? The tax system is very complicated! When you think like that, you may start thinking how you can avoid paying tax and exploring options like offshore havens and other opaque tax arrangements. What taxpayers' money should be spent on is a little tricky, I guess. If you think that every child is entitled to good education and it is our duty, as a nation, to provide it, you may see it just that public spending is used for education. If you think that living a healthy life is a human right and it is our duty, as a nation, to protect it, you may see it just that public spending is used for healthcare... and so on. Broadband... if it is seen as a bare necessity and therefore everybody must have it... perhaps public spending may be used...? I don't know. Should giant tech companies provide free broadband like a charity? Why should they? I don't know what Corbyn means by free broadband exactly.

Naomi replies on Nov 17, 2019:
@Gardener, @JackHammel My original question was if we need inequality (or it is almost like a natural condition for us, humans) to better ourselves. Put it this way - Let's say people in developing countries think that life in America looks much better than theirs - they recognise the difference in quality of life, i.e., inequality, so, they decide to emigrate to America. If they didn't see inequality, i.e., they think that their life is equally good, they wouldn't be motivated to emigrate to America. There seems to be a notion that we need to have inequality to motivate ourselves to do better. Unintentionally, but my train of thought is a tad bit Rousseauian...? Oh heck, how should I know? 😂

Anyway, thanks for your sensible input.

Hello jamespott. Thanks for your input. "Never mind how odd, or twisted. You cannot blame the original thinker for this. Nietzsche is a prime example. The notion (now famous or infamous rather) that "gender is a social construct" is a cautionary observation by her, and I realise that there is a profound meaning to it. Like you say, how odd it may appear, she observed and analysed the modern Western world consisting of different people with different sexual orientations in relation to cultural and societal aspects, etc., like putting jigsaw puzzle pieces together, and concluded with that statement. Unfortunately, it seems that "gender is a social construct" has been hijacked by dishonest ideologues and feminists; they take it literally and weaponise it for their own agenda.

Naomi replies on Nov 16, 2019:
Hello. Emotions like conceit and envy are usually regarded as bad things, and because I think so, too, when I recognise these bad emotions in myself, I manage not to let them surface. They are ugly things and I don't like the fact that I have them in me, but at the same time, I don't think I can eliminate them for ever because I think it's human nature. Incidentally, according to Buddhism, there are as many as 108 defilements like envy and conceit. And if I tell you I never have these bad emotions, I will be lying. Anyway, my train of thought was: If we were all equal, we wouldn't have emotions like conceit and envy, in other words, we have these emotions because we are unequal in the first place. For example, you may feel envious if someone earns more than you, and you may feel defeated by the envy you have towards that person or you can change that envy to the driving force of motivation so that you will do better in your life. Conceit is a synonym of narcissism. Narcissistic people are competitive and motivated by their own achievements, and they will continue to strive to achieve further. I was wondering if what is originally regarded as a bad emotion can give a person motivation to do well, that may be because there is inequality in the first place.
