George Soros and 17 other wealthy individuals ask for a wealth tax on the 1% [nytimes.com]
10thGeneration comments on Jun 24, 2019:
If it is an income tax it is a Trojan Horse. The vast majority of extreme wealth is not flowing each year through payrolls, stock options or distributions to owners. It sits in existing assets, trusts and the like. Sheltered not even on the radar. Let Mr. Soros suggest a 10% assets tax or a 10% tax ...

WilyRickWiles replies on Jun 24, 2019:
@Babou Terms and mythology aside, don't they describe two different sets of values and methods of relating to other people? Beyond that there's the question of whether they actually map to two large segments of the population: one predominantly left and the other predominantly right. My intuition to agree with this model stems from reading studies that validated similar models of morality but I suppose your skepticism is reasonable. I'm not a huge fan of using psychology to analyze political behavior and I am even less of a fan of using biology, but I thought that this model was useful to help form some consciousness about how one relates to other people, wherever in the political spectrum they may fall. Such a consciousness might help people reform how they communicate or devise a better system. As a corollary, I think the idea of an "honor culture" reveals some insights into America's mass shooting problem (I see them as a kind of honor killing). Finally, I am interested in how these ideas are received by the IDW community because I suspect that there is a disconnect. Before I respond to your post, I should admit that I think your posts in general have some good insights, which seem to be rooted in some form of liberalism or humanism, but that to me it seems like you are overexerting yourself to be evenhanded in your criticism of the right and the left. I suppose, however, that that may be rhetorically warranted. And my instinct is to reject your biological analyses as reductive, though perhaps they are worth more consideration. I'll also concede that that is not my area of expertise. So now, I think it is best if I respond to your criticism of the left. I'll concede that people run on some cultural program instilled by their parents, educators, and community; and their brains have a limited amount of plasticity. I'd add that other important factors are your network and wealth. So the left actually has some tools that it can use, as long as it can manage to enact them: 1. it can educate the next generation (and educate or organize interested adults), 2. it can mix people (e.g., school districts, busing, workplaces, public housing, and new models of organization), and 3. it can give people more wealth. But yes, I think you do make a valid point on some of the constraints.

@PalmThis I guess I could understand such a pact in response to a brazen violation of human rights, but this seems a rather technical matter, and a constitutional one at that. Moreover, the most likely outcome is that the lawmakers flee the state and avoid the state troopers, leading ultimately to a compromise.

Before Trump they were quickly processing and releasing people, which makes perfect sense since we have ankle bracelet technology; it's cheaper; and it's more humane. But Trump has preferred to detain until asylum cases can be heard. The challenge is that the system is only getting more backlogged and the camps, or detention centers if you prefer, of which the article gives plenty of examples, are overfull. And now Trump is claiming that he's going to start deporting millions of people. It's almost certainly bullshit, but it should go without saying that doing so would require concentration camps that would rival the Nazis', and 1,000s of people could die.

Then after the couple leaves (it's unclear whether they were confronted by police), the police pursue them and the events in the videos ensue. Whether or not you think the police were justified to pursue them, I challenge you to watch the video and justify the officers' actions, which, by the way, are completely missing from police statements.

Your version distorts their version. "On May 27, 2019, at approximately 11:17 a.m., a Phoenix Police Officer was investigating an unrelated shoplifting at a store in the area of 1600 N. 36th Street, when he was advised by store employees of another shoplifting. The officer was directed to some individuals who were getting into a vehicle. He observed a woman drop a “food foil,” when she saw him. As he walked towards the vehicle, the car quickly backed up and started to leave parking lot. It stopped at McDowell Road, and one of the women got out and the car drove away. The woman was detained by the officer. It was later found the woman he detained had three misdemeanor warrants for her arrest. She was later booked for the warrants. A description of the vehicle was broadcasted over the radio. The vehicle was located a short distance from the store near 32nd Street and McDowell Road and followed it was followed into the parking lot of an apartment complex in the area of 3200 E. Roosevelt Street, where a man and woman in the car were taken into custody and detained. After being advised of her rights, the woman who had been detained, said her aunt and child went into the store and when she saw her child walk out of the store with a doll, she believed they had stolen it, because they didn’t have any money. She heard the officer who approached the car in the parking lot tell the driver to stop several times, but he didn’t. After being advised of his rights, the man said he knew they had shoplifted from the store and that he threw a pair of underwear out the window, because he knew they were stolen. In addition, he stated he knew he was driving on a suspended driver license. Because the property was returned, the store employees said they did not desire prosecution, so no one was charged with the shoplifting. The man however, was cited and his vehicle was impounded, due to his driving on a suspended license."
