Everything else being equal... same skills, experience, education, potential... But white, or male, would she have been hired?
WilyRickWiles replies on Sep 21, 2020:
@Hanno I'm sorry, I misread you as asking whether an equally qualified white person would have been hired, but framing aside, I think my point stands. Basically, I agree that she would have had a lower chance of being hired, but my agreement stops there. That is, I'm saying that if you had a lab that cranked out Black and white journalists in proportion to their share of the population, and you engineered the Black journalists to be more qualified, the Black journalists would still be disproportionately less likely to be hired because of systemic discrimination. Our history in the United States defines one's biases and opportunities. The "catch-22" that you can't combat racism because that would itself be racism is ludicrous.

Probably more likely, looking at the disproportionate number of white people in these roles. Unless you think non-white people are on the whole less qualified. I think it's more likely that non-white people don't have the networks to get the job in the first place and don't have the support when they get there. Moreover, they often stick out by virtue of their appearance and culture and may feel a disproportionate burden to stick their neck out for fairness, while being penalized more if they do.

Hey Wily, you remember our wager of 3,335 coins for the outcome of the election of Trump? Are you nervous?
WilyRickWiles replies on Sep 16, 2020:
Biden the campaigner is even more of an obstinate neoliberal than I expected, so I do have concerns about his strategy. Add to that a lot of chaos in the world. But the fundamentals are good. And at the end of the day, the loss of my preferred primary candidate is a blessing because I can focus on more important things than the presidential election. Good luck.

In what world is it okay to burn the very thing that citizens are supposed to pledge their allegiance to? Wouldn't that be sedition?

You take your orders of patriotism from a poem written by a socialist? I'm surprised.

I'm not a big fan of Huffpo, but some of their journalists occasionally put in a good long-form piece, and on topics that the mainstream media ignores. I'd evaluate the journalist's record.

@torontogal4388 A founding Know Nothing, Confederate officer, white supremacist, and possible KKK leader, nice. As before, I refer you to Lincoln's words on the matter. https://harpers.org/2008/02/lincolns-whig-credo/ Are you still scared of Catholics or have they been assimilated into your worldview? Just scared of the Latino ones, perhaps? And "the blacks" of course. We can discuss problems with the UN, but they are a function of its neoliberal member states. And from what I understand, it also has less inherent power than the EU, for example.

@torontogal4388 The thing about nationalism, or nativism, is that it is inherently exclusionary. People who do not fit the norm are not considered full citizens. We saw the extreme consequences of such thinking during the Holocaust and are getting another taste from our country's treatment of immigrants. It's a backward-looking way of thinking--seeking to enforce traditional hierarchies and values, which due to our history are tied up with whiteness, rather than protect universal civil liberties. Moreover, the idea of "globalism" evokes antisemitic conspiracy theories and erases the distinction between undemocratic (or neoliberal) multilateral institutions and democratic internationalism.

@torontogal4388 You're saying the same thing I did--just using euphemisms. I saw it in my own family--descended from Irish, French-Canadian, Norwegian, and German immigrants, some of whom did not speak English their entire life, were not naturalized, and faced discrimination from the KKK. Somehow just a few generations later, dozens of my first cousins are more than half English and adopted the worst aspects of that culture and its chauvinism!

@TheMiddleWay The site has recently partnered with white nationalists, so I wouldn't put much stock in its terms. Also, even though many may not act on their hated, such people are disproportionately represented among people with power (e.g. Peter Thiel), and the powerful have a history of exploiting hatred to divide and conquer. Moreover, millions of people voted for Trump believing that he would take a hard line on all non-Anglo immigrants.

Yikes. Sorry you experienced that, but I'm not surprised. That sort of thing is often offered on here as justification for conspiracy theories about leftists, liberals, and Jewish people, and the idea that non-Anglo people are inherently unable to integrate and deserve to be stripped of human rights...

My attitude changed. I became less forgiving. I will NEVER forgive Israel for attacking America on 11 September 2001. Their crime is well-documented here: https://wikispooks.com/wiki/9-11/Israel_did_it
WilyRickWiles replies on Sep 11, 2020:
I'm sure that source is garbage (not going to even look at it). But I think its healthy to be critical of the official story. It is highly possible that the hijackers were part of an operation that "got away" from the intelligence agencies of the US and its allies: Saudi Arabia and Israel. And today it's very clear how those powers are aligned--it is Saudi Arabia and Israel who funded Sunni extremist groups during the rise of ISIS in order to counter Iran for hegemony in an oil-rich region. No need for wild conspiracy theories--the US and its allies have a history of working with extremist groups. This was at best blowback. We should be skeptical and comfortable with uncertainty, but not jump to conclusions grounded in old bigotries, when there's limited information.
