@govols I guess Robin's point of starting where he does is that in feudal times those traditionalists were the ones in power. Where there was opposition, it was mostly different aristocratic factions squabbling over things like religion rather than different class interests. And the Enlightenment is when the current stage of society began. I suppose if you want to go back farther, you can consult philosophers like Marx.

There's a fear of black creativity because that means maybe white supremacy is a lie. Maybe they're human just like us. Maybe they're just as creative, imaginative, and telling it just like us. Then they hear the music and they say ooh they got something going on in the black side of town but we don't know. It's like you going to see Prior, right? Somebody would have told you, oh brother Joe, white supremacy of America tells you that black creativity, black intelligence, black genius doesn't exist, and you go and see Pryor with your parents and you go away thinking, this negro's a genius! Somebody lied to me! I got to recognize that. And then you recognize oh there's a whole tradition of Pryor and we can go on and on from the Coltrane, Sarah Vaughan, and on and on and on, right? And so people begin to think, especially white brothers and sisters, our parents have been lying to us when it comes to black intelligence, imagination, genius, and humanity."

He's already barred asylum-seekers at ports of entry; banned nationals of eight, mostly-Muslim countries; admitted record low numbers of refugees, capped in the tens of thousands; and cancelled DACA and TPS. Moreover, the tenth point of his immigration plan from 2016 was to "limit legal immigration, lower it to 'historic norms,' and set new caps." His more recent plan for "merit immigration" explicitly favors the young and the wealthy. The intent is to find a backdoor way to reimpose racial quotas. As Trump himself said, "We will reform legal immigration to serve the best interests of America and its workers, the forgotten people. Workers. We're going to take care of our workers." And "Why do we want these people from all these shithole countries here? We should have more people from places like Norway." Just own your beliefs already.

It's a manufactured crisis. The Trump administration is intentionally creating these conditions for the purpose of a "deterrent." There is no reason for these people to be detained. Ankle monitors exist. Moreover, you can throw money at this dysfunctional system until the cows come home. The right will always find new ways to tax the system. They won't be happy until tens of millions of people who have lived here for decades are rounded up in camps.

@chuckpo Your focus on cultural issues rather than political issues strikes me as similar to my liberal friend who insists that the cultural impact of a gay person or a person of color being President would do more good than someone like Bernie who would put economic freedom on the agenda. He clings to this despite acknowledging that it didn't work out under Obama (except probably in the workplace).

WilyRickWiles replies on Jul 2, 2019:
Hmm... doesn't seem very scientific to me. I've seen a few tents here and there but not anything that suggests it's a big problem or that connects it to disease or immigration. I'd welcome more resources to combat homelessness, but Trump sounds like he has something darker in mind for these people and the cities they live in. It draws to mind the scapegoating of Jews in Europe during the Black Death. I was hoping another city-dweller could square Trump's rhetoric with their experience, because it doesn't make any sense to me at all.
