@JimbobNE Jesus, how many times do we need to hash this out. Under Obama, older children were detained when they came here alone until they could make arrangements with an adult in the US (which they generally already had planned out). Under Trump, they started unnecessarily detaining asylees, requiring their young children, who aren't as capable of navigating the legal system and don't know other adults in the US, to be detained. This caused a huge spike in children detainees, overtaxing the system. They knew full well that would be the consequence and did so anyway, intending it to be a deterrent (it wasn't).

@JimbobNE While there may be statutes describing why an action by the President would be a crime if committed by any other citizen, there is no need to rely on legal statutes for the Senate to convict. The standard is "high crimes and misdemeanors." https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High_crimes_and_misdemeanors And I think my use of "potential" was clear enough about where more investigation is needed--something the impeachment process would help with. Regarding immigration policy, there should have been hearings yesterday on Trump's reckless family separation policy. It certainly meets the aforementioned standard. You may not like it, but that's probably because it's a political process.

@FrankZeleniuk I turned to socialism after the right's embrace of Trump revealed to me how their politics boils down to a desire to impose traditional hierarchies on people. I'd rather be a free man than be forced to subordinate and seek patronage from some would be king like Trump, Jerry Falwell, or Erik Prince. Their politics is being spread all over the world by oligarchs (a consequence of not taxing and regulating enough) and the liberal technocracy has been powerless to stop it. I worry that when they do strike back it will be in the form of more institutional authoritarianism rather than more democracy. Where you see the UN as an instrument of communists, I see it as an instrument of the same professional class that has been in power since the Enlightenment, which to be fair, I am a member. Yes, I think having a UN is better than not having one, but I think it needs to be reformed. While the feudalism the right seeks to return to does require big government, socialism does not. You can be anywhere on the spectrum from an anarchist to a communist. While like George Orwell I have some anarchist tendencies, today I choose the pragmatic option of social democracy. There are just too many advantages to the current state. Primarily, the US dollar. I think egalitarianism is a good thing to work toward. Certainly the merchant class that brought about capitalism and liberal democracy thought it was worthwhile to redistribute the power of the aristocracy. And I think it is desirable to work toward a world where the working class is just as empowered.

Biden was asking him to stop protecting the organization his son worked for. Trump's call is about paying Ukraine to make official statements that undermine a presidential contender. It's not even about a real investigation, not that one is warranted. "In May, when this issue began to surface, The Intercept’s Robert Mackey wrote an excellent piece debunking the lies in the new pro-Trump version of the Biden story. In the process, he provided greater detail than I had included in my 2015 story. @FrankZeleniuk A conspiracy theory that sounds like it was made up by a fading feudal aristocrat, upset at the growing power of the middle class with the growth of capitalism and democracy. My grandparents were indoctrinated in the conspiracy theory as children. One was a member of a secret Catholic anti-communist cell and the other became a member of a new conservative Baptist congregation and the John Birch Society. Gossip and spying on your neighbor ruled the day. Anything that encouraged cultural freedom was bad. The funny thing is that the two grandparents would have ratted out each other as parts of the conspiracy to undermine traditional families because of their religious differences. The latter grandparent would constantly argue with his parents in law, who came from a long line of Universalists. My grandmother went into a deep depression, perhaps because of the traditional role imposed on her in contrast to several generations of women before her. They sent my mom to a conservative school where she couldn't play cards, dance, wear jeans, associate with males, or drink. Church attendence was required and spies watched you off campus. They lost their accreditation and she never was able to complete her degree. Her friend went to school to become a pastor's wife, which didn't pan out, and has lived an unfulfilled life to this day. As for me, nothing about your theory rings true about my experience in school. I did become a socialist in response to Donald Trump's election, though. I still get along great with my family, even the ones I disagree with. We are strong enough to respect our selves and each other as individuals and confront and learn from the discomfort of disagreement.

Key points: "It is 50 days into the lockdown in Kashmir since roads were blocked off, schools shut, and internet and communication services stopped. On Aug. 5, India’s federal government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi imposed a curfew in the Muslim-majority area after amending the law to revoke the partial autonomy and statehood of Jammu and Kashmir. Restrictions on movement were immediately placed through a curfew as internet and telecommunications were cut. The government also decreed that people from other Indian states could buy land in the region and become permanent citizens here."

Before too long the jobs are going to be gone in the places they were exported to. Here at home, on one side Trump wants to prop up (but still insufficiently) dying industries while letting these towns die, and on the other side the neoliberals of both parties want to let the industries die but save the towns. Might it be better to use this country's resources toward a just transition for those affected by globalization AND support immigration to revitalize dying towns? The latter will help towns in the late stages of decline while the former will sustain those in the earlier stages (and will help people, of course, which is the most important part). There's no reason to be disillusioned just because some of the more recent immigrants are more brown than the ones who preceded them or aren't Christian. And I think you overdramatize internal migration. I didn't move to the city from the suburbs, for example, out of desperation. Neither did my grandfather move from the farm to the suburbs. There are plenty jobs available--and the means for the government to guarantee one--but not the commitment to a living wage and education needed.

@Naomi Climate change is not my #1 issue. It can be leveraged for very bad ends (e.g. population control) and is so contentious that it might be easier to achieve socialism, something that would probably be just as good for the world in the grand scheme of things. Because of wealth inequality, no activism, research, or culture is entirely organic. So I tend to be skeptical of figures who push climate politics. But I don't see anything particularly insidious about certain words getting more attention or funding. And I think we could stand to be a lot more charitable to Greta Thunberg. I generally accept the fact that there has been a huge spike in global temperatures that shows no sign of stopping, and that it is more likely than not caused by humans. We may not have data granular enough to know whether such a spike is unprecedented, but that is probably beside the point. I believe that the models scientists are putting forth are in good faith and are incrementally improving our understanding of climate change. Ultimately, I approach the issue through the belief that a socialist vision involves careful stewardship of the environment.

@Naomi I would say that scientists and their experiments are not free of political bias and that politicians do politicize science, but I wouldn't say that science is a mere propaganda vehicle. I think in general, as new experiments are done and are reproduced, our collective knowledge incrementally increases. While the facts of climate change are sometimes distorted by supporters, and we can of course disagree on solutions, I think opponents are denying and distracting from basic facts in a way that is more harmful. It leads to perpetual delay. And at this point, if we intend to do anything about climate change, I think alarm is an appropriate reaction.
