Check the published death rates between Type "A", Type "B" and Wuhan flu, you will see that this is all about stopping the improvements Trump has made to the overall economy!! They could not impeach him, so they had to do something before the election!!!! AND, the media is pushing this BS!!!
WilyRickWiles replies on Mar 17, 2020:
@Serg97 Not my style. I believe that this spreads quickly enough to cause serious problems for our health care system, and am down with being careful and staying home for a week or two, but I will have serious problems with a surveillance state or any other authoritarian measures instituted because of this.

WilyRickWiles replies on Mar 17, 2020:
Trump's words comparing it to the flu: "So a number that nobody heard of that I heard of recently and I was shocked to hear it, 35,000 people on average die each year from the flu. Did anyone know that? 35,000. That’s a lot of people. It could go to 100,000, it could be 27,000, they say usually a minimum of 27, it goes up to 100,000 people a year who die, and so far we have lost nobody to coronavirus in the United States. Nobody. And it doesn’t mean we won’t, and we are totally prepared, it doesn’t mean we won’t. But think of it. You hear 35 and 40,000 people, and we’ve lost nobody, and you wonder, the press is in hysteria mode."

WilyRickWiles replies on Mar 17, 2020:
@Hanno He's claiming that the disease is not as much of a threat as it has been made out to be and that the Democrats are at fault for that. That's exactly the point Trump made. He called the Democrats' concerns about its spread and the administration's response a "new hoax" to undermine him and likened it to the flu, claiming that it was under control and pretty much over with. More recently, he has gotten serious about it. Trump: "Now the Democrats are politicizing the coronavirus. You know that, right? Coronavirus. They’re politicizing it. We did one of the great jobs. You say, ‘How’s President Trump doing?’ They go, ‘Oh, not good, not good.’ They have no clue. They don’t have any clue. They can’t even count their votes in Iowa, they can’t even count. No they can’t. They can’t count their votes. One of my people came up to me and said, ‘Mr. President, they tried to beat you on Russia, Russia, Russia. That didn’t work out too well. They couldn’t do it. They tried the impeachment hoax. That was on a perfect conversation. They tried anything, they tried it over and over, they’ve been doing it since you got in. It’s all turning, they lost, it’s all turning. Think of it. Think of it. And this is their new hoax. But you know, we did something that’s been pretty amazing. We’re 15 people [cases of coronavirus infection] in this massive country. And because of the fact that we went early, we went early, we could have had a lot more than that."

WilyRickWiles replies on Feb 26, 2020:
@Naomi Sounds like a good system. The US at minimum needs to consolidate school districts (which can contribute to segregation) and change funding formulas (from local property taxes). The challenge with the latter is that state budgets are strained with pension obligations (including those of teachers). Decades ago the federal government decided to insure and require minimum funding levels for private pensions but not public ones. They could totally do that now and help states refinance but that's not even part of the conversation. Instead fearmongering about "Cultural Marxism" and unwarranted liberal budget hawkery lead to yet more cuts.

Hello. I just caught a headline on a news channel this morning, and apparently, Bernie Sanders said that America should be able to rationally learn from Cuba, or something along those lines. What does he mean by that, do you know?
WilyRickWiles replies on Feb 26, 2020:
@Naomi Yes we do for K-12 even though the right has tried to divest from it, something they've done with some degree of success in minority communities. But there are still a lot of blind spots in the teaching of history. Still, I trust young people and millennials to be fairly immune to such propaganda, but the mainstream media and the older people who watch it are not. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=683289492211768

Here's the interview. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/bernie-sanders-democratic-presidential-front-runner-anderson-cooper-60-minutes/ The problem is that there is almost a speech code in America against mentioning the full complexity of our foreign policy, e.g. our past interventions against democratically elected foreign governments and current attempts to do so, our current support of authoritarian regimes like Saudi Arabia, and our anticommunist grudge against countries like Cuba. He elaborated on those matters in the debate last night. Cuba is particularly relevant in the state of Florida, where there is a large diaspora of the former Cuban upper class. The relevant part from the interview: "Anderson Cooper: What is democratic socialism? Bernie Sanders: When Donald Trump was a private businessman in New York, he got $800 million in tax breaks and subsidies to build luxury housing. That's called corporate socialism. What democratic socialism is about is saying, 'Let's use the federal government to protect the interests of working families.' Back in the 1980s, Sanders had some positive things to say about the former Soviet Union and the Sandinistas in Nicaragua. Here he is explaining why the Cuban people didn't rise up and help the U.S. overthrow Cuban leader Fidel Castro: "…he educated their kids, gave them health care, totally transformed the society, you know?" Bernie Sanders: We're very opposed to the authoritarian nature of Cuba but you know, it's unfair to simply say everything is bad. You know? When Fidel Castro came into office, you know what he did? He had a massive literacy program. Is that a bad thing? Even though Fidel Castro did it? Anderson Cooper: A lot of p-- dissidents imprisoned in-- in Cuba. Bernie Sanders: That's right. And we condemn that. Unlike Donald Trump, let's be clear, you want to-- I do not think that Kim Jong Un is a good friend. I don't trade love letters with a murdering dictator. Vladimir Putin, not a great friend of mine."

@BikerPetehall70 You have it backward. It's frightening what is happening in China. What worries me is that Trump is pretending that China has it under control and that it's not going to affect us. He's refusing to push China to get more information so that the CDC can prepare. When it inevitably arrives in the US, he will have to own up to it, and more likely than not, he will use it to further marginalize foreigners and people with left-wing politics.

@rway I think the power dynamics matter. I'm less critical of black nationalism, for example, because black people have been racialized and oppressed by white people and white-dominated institutions who had more power. It's not racist to recognize that people have been racialized and oppressed despite the right's efforts to enforce such a "catch-22." Moreover, there is a history of groups like the Black Panthers who began as black nationalists but over time developed a more universal outlook of solidarity. And while it is not uncommon for centrists to use identity cynically, the left is very much committed to solidarity as well.

By divesting from public universities, we've created an incentive for universities to cater to foreign students, who pay the full tuition.
