@iThink When I see the proliferation of public carry and "stand your ground" laws, I get the sense that vigilante justice has become part of the basis for gun law. And the most avid gun enthusiasts I know, while also avid hunters, openly admit to keeping so many guns primarily because they're afraid that urban Black Lives Matters protesters will single out their rural home to burglarize and rape their wife. Would be better if policing itself was more of a civic duty.

WilyRickWiles replies on Aug 29, 2019:
More: "As today’s memo changing interpretation of residence which in turn affects citizenship of children born abroad shows, immigration law is complex. It took me much of the day to sort it out and feel like I had a decent grasp on it. And I still feel like there are parts to it I would have to study. What most people do not know is that acquiring citizenship through parents after birth can be complex. In fact, there are at least five different sets of criteria that apply based on when the birth took place. I literally have to go look up the chart and check to see where a client is and determine which set of rules apply. But today’s change is strange. For years our government has deemed that children born abroad to a parent stationed on active duty with the military or for our government were considered to be residents living in the U.S. that makes sense because the parent themself is deemed to be a resident if the U.S. For example, in Ohio, if you are active duty abroad you still vote in Ohio. You don’t lose your residence. So that was the idea behind according that residence to a parent’s child as well. But today changed that for families where one parent is not a citizen who lived long enough in the US. Two USC parents having a child abroad are unaffected because a different code section (INA 301) controls. Although there are exceptions even there. But now we have changed the rules to say that child is no longer a resident and therefore must jump through an extra hoop. That hoop is they must file for a Certificate of Citizenship. For many military, they can do that overseas. But for non military, they MUST return with the child to complete this process. And it must be done before age 18. They must complete the process by getting a visa as a foreign national and come to the US. What is the significance of that? US Citizens do not need a visa to come home to the US. Only foreign nationals need visas. Frankly, I don’t even know how a child in this situation could legitimately get a NIV. By definition you have to have nonimmigrant intent for most NIVs. That is impossible in this situation. Which leaves IVs. That means you have to petition for a foreign national family member and it typically takes close to a year for that process. It is also expensive. AND, it is subject to denial. Now for an infant, maybe not a big deal for some bars. But for some teens, they could land on the stupid side of some things. And, an infant with major health issues could find themselves facing the new public charge criteria. Or, none of this could be a problem and it’s just a matter of filling out some forms and paying fees. That’s the hard part. Nobody knows exactly how this stuff will actually go. And obviously the numbers involved are probably ...

Try not getting outraged by how other individuals live their lives. It's a big country. One person doing something you find odd does not imply an epidemic of such behavior.
