@Crikey You asked: "Why is it surprising that some of us fail to find that a bunch of bronze age myths are not a compelling source of truth?" It is not surprising at all. There is much blindness in the world, and many think they see. I think there is much that we don't see. We may have not been given the eyes to see, or we may be blind and in need of healing. Faith in an unseen God...it is said, is a gift. None of us, it seems can simply manufacture it, or choose it.

@Crikey, @waynus That's an interesting statement, waynus. It seems to beg an answer, then, to what is the definition of a Christian. I suppose one could say, too, that the definition would also not be agreed upon by many who claim to follow Jesus' teachings? If that is the case, and many are deceived, how do you know that you know anything about "Christianity"? Maybe you were attached to a group of mistaken cult members who only thought they understood, but misrepresented the Truth? I'm not trying to be argumentative, I hope. I'm just trying to understand. So, may I ask how you define Christianity? Thanks

@waynus By the way, I, too, take an historicist perspective regarding the Revelation, but the reason I brought up the "Mark of the Beast" prophecy....that no man would be able to buy or sell without this 'mark' on his right hand or forehead....is to show that, if literal, that prophecy has not yet, seemingly, been fulfilled and is yet future. Unless, of course, you interpret the mark as not literal but symbolic of the "money system" and is about what a person does with his right hand and how he thinks in his forehead....or some such other way to interpret what it clearly seems to be saying. (It seems to me that it is entirely possible to understand this prophecy literally, however, with chips and marks gladly being accepted by some to make their lives easier. They no longer have to carry around cash, or credit cards, or have their id on them when they want to enter a secure area at their place of employment...etc. no risk of theft...efficiency in shopping without going through checkouts...no more tax evasion or black market stuff...just total control of people's lives....by the BEAST, which appears to be an extension of the Babylonian, Medes and persians, Greek...Roman...governmental systems seen by Nebachadnezzar and interpreted by Daniel.) Plus....It would appear that The Revelation's revelation of the first and second resurrections haven't yet happened either...and death being abolished and hell cast into the lake of fire...and all that stuff! So, there seems much yet to come! But, I do understand that it can be frustrating to listen to 'teachers' that know not of what they teach!

dmatic replies on Oct 20, 2019:
@waynus There are, of course, many different 'ideas' of how the Revelation can, or should be "interpreted", as there are many different ideas of life and its meaning or non-meaning. Most of us acknowledge that we don't know all the answers, yet, but, we keep searching, I think. Unless, we get discouraged and/or give up. Personally, I think it will all become clearer someday. And, just because there are many ideas "out there" and each one claims to be the right way to interpret life, even though it would seem that everyone can't be right, it does not mean that there is not a right way. I don't know your story, other than you say you used to be a "believer", but are not now, apparently, though you may not know what to believe. I know that your story is not over, however. There are "chapters" YET TO BE WRITTEN. (I didn't intend to capitalize....hit the caps lock button by 'mistake', but I'm going to leave it). I'm not yelling at you. I like you and want the best for you. What is best? God knows. I know that He is "particularly fond of you", and I know that He has a plan for you, too. He will give you eyes to see and a heart to understand, even though you may now think you see fine. Revelation is an exciting life. I am not aware of any Biblical prophecy given by God, that has failed. It, of course, is evident that everything hasn't been revealed yet, and that there are prophecies that are yet to be fulfilled, but so what? Promises can be a good source of hope, especially if given by One Who does not lie and has the ability to accomplish that which He says. Hope is good. As is Faith and, of course, Love. We all could use a little more of each, I think. maybe a lot more. Maybe you think He has lied to you? Maybe you think He has failed you somehow? Please share if you want. thanks

@DanMartinovich Thanks for the reference to your articles....Wow. Lots of words. I started to read and came across this: " The answer to this was in first sentence of Galatians 4:21..... are you not aware of what the law says? 22. For it is written, that Abraham had two sons. This story in Genesis is the Torah, the law. The apostle calls the account of Ishmael and Isaac in Genesis the Law for a specific reason. Because it is so clear a New Testament doctrine, that the Law of Moses has been done away. This is especially true in the case of these two peoples as Ephesians 2:14-16 declares unequivocally: 14 For Christ is our peace, who has made both (Jew and Gentile) one, and has broken down the dividing wall of hostility (the law of Moses,) 15 by abolishing in his flesh the law (of Moses) with it's commandments and ordinances, that he might create in himself one new man in place of the two, so ending the hostility between them. 16 and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby bringing the hostility to an end. " I need to stop here and ask you if you really believe the "Law of Moses" has been done away? Jesus taught that we should not think that. Please tell me you don't think that....

@GaryWitt Tucker said: "Any economy based on interest payments is a scam..." This is a perfect statement. What is it about 'FINANCIALISM' that you would seem to defend it? Financialism is the parasite of an "economy", taking a great share of profit without contributing to the production of wealth. It robs from capital and labor. Interest collecting needs to be abolished.

@waynus Guess I'm not sure to what prophecy you refer, that you have judged has failed? I am not aware of any that have failed, that God has prophesied. Even, for example, the dreaded "mark of the Beast", that the book of Revelation declares would be required on everyone in order to buy or sell. Though it would have probably been hard for many previous generations to believe that such a system could be employed, today, we can easily see that the technology exists to do so.

dmatic replies on Oct 18, 2019:
@waynus I suppose it is possible to read, say, the Bible, and see if the prophesied things actually happened to the people prophesied about. If so, then it would appear that there was, indeed, a plan that was being followed, or known, beforehand. Then, it would be a matter of asking the planner, what part oneself was playing if the Planner, indeed, needed or wanted to tell you. But, if the Planner didn't want you to know about the plan, I suppose nothing could convince you that you played a part in its fulfillment. I suppose also, that if you had knowledge of the plan, or thought you did, and it actually happened, then that, in itself, would be evidence sufficient to convince you that it was real. If it didn't happen, then, that would be evidence that you didn't actually, have knowledge of the plan.

dmatic replies on Oct 18, 2019:
I would surmise that the difference may be in whose perspective one is observing the reality from. If one is looking from a point of view of an actor who is not aware that he/she is part of a plan, or a story, one may not see the purpose of his/her part, and may thus devalue his/her existence. If one is looking from the perspective of the Planner, it may not be necessary for the actor to understand his/her part in the big picture, for the Planner to achieve His/Her objective. If there is no plan....obviously, one that claimed "knowledge" of a non-existent thing would be a bit incredible. But, most people, I suspect, are ignorant....not even knowing that they have been created...and that, for a purpose.

I'm not saying that God has not granted some authority to use His property..It's all His, by the way. He owns it all by right of creation. I, too, would be happy to hear Dinesh's testimony.

The Medes and Persians, God used to set the people free from Babylon, but, they were not yet free of the pronounced judgment of 2520 years of "Beast" rule over them. One wonders how God is going to overthrow Mystery Babylon, now that the 2520 years has been accomplished. I think the mindset of Mystery Babylon not only includes religion, but government and economics as well. It will be interesting to watch.

dmatic replies on Oct 8, 2019:
@Biosphere,Well, that's interesting. That may lead to a whole new discussion, but, it would be nice to know wouldn't it? Who are we anyway? Are we a spirit? Are we a soul? Are we a personality living in a body? A body that "lives" for a while, then dies? Then what? Who do you identify with? The Bible, I believe, has a passage that says: When a man dies the flesh goes back to the dust from which it came and the spirit goes back to God Who gave it. That passage says nothing about a soul, however. I do not believe in the immortality of the soul, because a soul can die....but, I believe in life after resurrection!

@Crikey Being deceived is an interesting phenomenon. If one knew he has been deceived he would not be deceived any longer, but would look to unlearn what he thought he "knew", and rather, learn the truth. Scripture rightly declares that every man thinks he is right about just about everything...at least in his own eyes he sees that he is thinking correctly about stuff. It seems to make sense to him. Then, he builds new 'knowledge' from that confidence. (Even though his foundational understanding may be flawed) When, at some time future, he discovers the faults in his foundation, and the structure upon which he built his world view is in danger of crumbling, this can be a scary place to be. It seems to take great effort to examine, and then fix, foundations sometimes, and many seem not willing to do the work...Maybe they get old and tired and figure they're not going to be around much longer anyway...who knows.? The problem becomes more evident when a whole neighborhood, or city, or society or civilization has been built on faulty foundations, and new people have adopted these places to live. Whole "denominations" and ways of thinking have been built up around some false interpretations of reality, and these false ideas are hard to let go of...because it is so scary! Naturally, we begin building our own structures of thoughts and beliefs from our youth, being influenced by our "forefathers" or forebears. Fear was a great motivator to get children and others to conform to the ways...thus established. The false idea of an "eternal damnation in hell"...is a very scary deal, of course, and many saw how they could manipulate this fear and get people to do and believe all sorts of stuff about God, and of course, give them money...many of these 'denominations' then made it OK in their minds to even kill those who threatened the status quo! Some of these denominations even went so far as to teach that God predestined some of His created ones to burn forever in torment! Who, obviously, would want to seek a God like that?

@george Maybe I wasn't clear. Sorry. I do believe the Bible....in its original meaning. If you want to study a bit, look up the definitions of the words olam, in Hebrew and aionios, or aion in Greek. Aionios, for example may mean describing what is happening during an age, which is undefined in duration but not endless.

@waynus that's a great point, about not worshiping a higher being, because, they also have been created. At least that what the Bible records angels cautioning. Don't worship me...worship God. is, basically, what they were saying to the astounded human at the revelation or manifestation. We all know there are many many faiths, or ways of seeing the created world around us. Which faith is correct? Which 'faith' answers the most questions to our satisfaction that truth has been approached. The Atheists' faith has many questions remaining to answer in my view. Where, and how did matter come into existence is one, or two. The Creationists' faith answers that with God spoke...so, it was not created out of nothing, as some posit, but, rather, matter was created out of Himself...and yet God is "immaterial". Interesting. Let us agree that we all have much to learn yet?

@waynus I do understand your frustration, and I have enjoyed our bit of conversation and suppose I will need to do some research myself. I brought up the King Tut myth because it is astounding to me to hear people uneducated as to the truth of his story. He was not a Pharaoh, or King, as is assumed by the 'historians'. He was simply the first-born son of the Pharaoh that had chased the Israelites with his gold wheeled Chariot after having second thoughts about sending them away...out of Egypt...as the Bible records accurately. The wheels of the chariots, including the gold ones from the Pharaoh's were found at the bottom of the Red Sea where God, miraculously divided the waters while the Israelites escaped but covered and drowned the Egyptian army that followed them. Since the people could not bury their Pharaoh, they used his tomb to bury his first-born son, who was a victim of the tenth and last plague that God used to convince the hard-hearted Pharaoh to let His people go. You know the history. Thanks again.

That's a contradiction, my friend. Do with it as you will. Honesty with ourselves, one would think, would be a worthy goal...even though it may be uncomfortable...even painful. "To thine own self be true"? Deception is a tricky deal. When one is deceived, he/she doesn't even know that! Many seem to think more highly of themselves than they ought, and most of us are repelled by the arrogance, because it is ugly and repulsive and disingenuous. "Meaningless Universe"? Guess I don't even get that. In my view, which you apparently reject, Everything that exists is about God, the Creator. It's His story. (history, to be blunt). Please don't ask me how He came into existence. That makes my head hurt. Too much for me right now. Anyway, He owns it all by right of creation. He is in the process of making mankind (all of us) in His own image...which is Love. He is perfect love. And life is about us learning how to love, how to be love in everything we think, do, and say... Some of these lessons are painful for a time and may even be "life long". I don't believe we come from non-existence and are going into non existence. I think, whether or not it is clear to us, the universe is unfolding as it should. We will learn our lessons and someday all will be keeping God's commands and instructions. In other words, when God states "Thou shalt not steal", for example, someday NO One will be stealing. He has given us a prophetic picture of what will be. the wolf will lie down with the lamb...etc. and none shall make anything afraid! No more death. No more fear of death. He will wipe every tear away! He is creating a beautiful thing. many do not have hope, which is very sad and I think it is because they do not know God....yet. Just joined this group, and I hope it is not a foolish endeavor. You bring up a great scripture! Is. 45:7 I think. Other scriptures point to the truth of it, as well, but many do not comprehend...or, at least those who have created a god in their own image, do not comprehend the depth of this truth....

@waynus I know what you mean. It is very sad that many seem content to stay in their deceptions....and they will fight tooth and nail with a person who tries to help them see....

This question seems to be aimed at former theists, am I right? If so, can non-former theists answer too?
dmatic replies on Oct 3, 2019:
@AndrewInVail Of course that is not possible because I have everything figured out! It is other people who are deceived...not me! Just kidding! One of my favorite questions is: If I (or you) were wrong would I (or you) want someone to tell me (or you) that? It is surprising how many would seem to prefer not to know! As for the definition of a "Christian"....I am certain that that would be an enlightening conversation with many. The one who would seem to be in the best position to answer the query would be the Christ, Himself, of course. And, of course, His Father.... Hypocrisy is a huge problem for most humans, as you probably know already. Many of us fantasize thinking we're something we're not. Many of us, for example, think we're not afraid of death....

Simply put, the Bible led me to become an atheist. But also, about 30+ books and lots of other materials, not to mention 30+ years of my own research. If you can honestly get through Genesis and come away believing that any of it is real, you have to be the most gullible person on Earth.

@waynus Servetus...executed because he, sincerely and courageously, did not believe in the trinity. Calvin and his ilk, thinking that he was thus "predestined" to burn forever in hell, excused themselves from their arrogance and murder probably thinking they would just help God out and get the burning started. Sad. and Deceived....obviously? Guess it's not so obvious to their followers...

@waynus Yes...agree. Jesus was certainly prophetic when He warned that many would come in His name, declaring Him to be the Christ, but deceiving MANY! It would appear that the influence of deception has gone rampant...Many do not seem to have a love for truth anymore. But, of course, they all think they've got it! They all think they are rightly dividing the word of truth, when many of them should be arrested for impersonation!

@Biosphere Religion can be divisive. In fact Jesus said that He came not to bring peace but actually division and that a man's enemies would be those of his own household. Doesn't mean that will always be the case, however. He also said we should love our enemies. It seems hard to love those with whom we disagree. I tried to edit my previous question but it wouldn't let me...maybe it's my computer. Anyway I should have asked: why do you think she did that? Now it worked...

@Biosphere If you want to quit, that's fine, but you impugned God's judgment as heinous? That's a serious charge. It simply shows that you have been misled into believing something that is not true. If you don't want to talk about it, just let me know and I'll stop. Everything God does is motivated by His love. "Eternal" punishment in hell is a false doctrine, and goes against God's teaching and His righteous character.

@Biosphere I'm not angry with you. It was you who said: "I drink to temporarily blount the cutting edge of my thoughts." I rephrased your assertion to see of it made any sense to you. If you think your thoughts are too sharp and you need to drink to blunt them, or to dullen them and not make them as sharp....it simply sounds like you want to effect a dull mind, so that you didn't have to think about your sharp thoughts? Just sounds like you're trying to give yourself an excuse to not stop drinking, even though you seem to know you should. Just trying to help friend!

I think Genesis means beginnings. what, specifically, in Genesis do you think only gullible people believe? They've found Noah's ark, for example....and as far as I know, most civilizations have recorded in their histories the fact of a world wide flood. Do you not believe their accounts either?

Ask yourself this question . . .who or what can be so powerful to create the universe . . . .from nothing? Where and when did it begin, presuming there is a beginning and ending.
