Identity Politics: Christianity Without Christ
timon_phocas comments on Jan 2, 2020:
The Jewish system of 613 commandments covers every aspect of life. But it is leavened by the prophetic voice of God urging mercy. He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God Micah 6:8 ...
dmatic replies on Jan 2, 2020:
Pretty astute observation and conclusion! Being unfamiliar with the term orthopraxy, I referred to wilipedia a line which I include: "Although traditionally Christianity is seen as primarily orthodoxical (as in the Nicene Creed's "I believe in ..."), some Christian denominations and leaders today, from Roman Catholic to Evangelical Christians, have started to describe their religions as both orthodoxical and orthopraxic. The premise is correct belief compels correct action, and incorrect action is caused by incorrect beliefs.[10][11]"

@iThink Sometimes, bumper stickers say what needs to be said. I actually believe we are near the beginning of a very huge event....here, on earth. Not in some after life....The Beast systems have been authorized to prevail and 'rule' for 2520 years, but their authority has come to an end. The Kingdom is being given to the saints (Overcomers) of the Most High God, the Ancient of Days, who will then have opportunity to produce the righteous fruit that the Creator is looking for. You know, all those qualities that counter all the bad ones you referred to. Like, love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, self-control, Godliness...etc. Love NEVER fails. God is love. It's in His plan. Someday, ALL will be keeping His instructions, too, you know.

@waynus "I didn't address the resurrection question as I thought the idea above covered it. Resurrection unlike reincarnation would actually require proof of which I know of none. No I do not think reincarnation is true also because reason suggests it is an unnecessary addition." One more comment about this paragraph. Not sure what "reason" you are using, though I'm sure you trust yours, as reasonable. Jesus, of course, is the proof, but, that's right, you don't even know if He was a real person. At any rate, He declared that we should not marvel at this, but an hour was coming, when ALL who are in their graves would hear His voice and be "resurrected". The Bible seems to teach two resurrections yet to come, one possibly in the near future, the other after a thousand year reign of Christ. Personally, I have not ruled out the possibility of "re-incarnation", as taught and understood by billions. I simply do not know, therefore, I have not concluded either way.

Your conclusion that "sadly, only until one or more parts of us fail can we get insights into who and what we are" (sic) is probably true for most, as Jesus has declared. Broad is the path that goes through destruction....to ?? enlightenment? But, He has said that there is a path that leads, not through destruction, but through life...but that few of us find that path.... Anyway, that is the path I seek. I am "content" not knowing something, but that does not preclude me from searching for the correct answer. The question is "Where do we come from?" What is our origin? Do "we" whatever that is, simply appear out of nowhere? That is not logical to me. So, I "conclude" that it is not the right answer to the question. We appear from somewhere. Where is that?

@Edgework @iThink @Facci, Reprobates seem destined to die in their ignorance. But, I was a bit hopeful, after the 2016 election, when the East Coast libs actually flew out to fly-over country to try to understand how they could have been so wrong. NatGeo, Slate magazine, and the Atlantic came out to interview many of us to see if they could discover how they missed our sentiments as was obvious by their disbelief in the results of the election. Nice people, even Katie Curic, but underneath their niceties, they were, of course, convinced they were better, that their world view was enlightened, and that we, in the sticks, were simply rubes. Yet, I was hopeful that they would actually listen and learn. Maybe two or three rounds of defeat will awaken them, but, there may be a more sinister conspiracy at work. Who seeks division, but someone who desires for the house to fall? Who would want the house to fall? Those who hate the house? It could be that those who think they are actually running the show desire for all the division and conflict to continue, so that our eyes are not focused on them as the true enemies of the structure. Who is fomenting this?

@waynus You are right, You said: "For me this position makes no sense," referring to a request to believe something simply because "they" said "Trust me." I suppose many cannot defend their faith in a variety of beliefs, including atheism, Christianity, Judaism, Islam, Buddhism, Humanism or any of the other philosophies out there that try to make sense of the world and life itself. If I may, I'd like to ask you more about this statement from you: "As to coming from nothing, I don't know, many claim to know but can produce no reasonable evidence. That means we are all in exactly the same position." Actually, what I was referring to was your earlier comment about your belief that you came from non-existence, into existence, then moving toward non-existence. I appreciate you saying you don't know, so your 'belief" was not really based on any evidence, was it? If you're really open to truth or looking for it, one would think you would want to find the answer to that question. I asked you a couple of times today if you believed in resurrection, but you avoided answering. All you "know" is that you are here, now. You don't know where you came from or where you are going. And yet, you criticize Jesus' teaching to think not about tomorrow? Who are we? What gives us our identity? Are we a soul? Are we a body? Are we a spirit? Are we a combination? What happens when one of those parts fails? What happens to the other parts? Too many questions? Let's not worry about it and just take it as it goes.

@waynus I enjoy these types of discussions, too. We seek truth, correct? I do, I hope. Who wants to believe lies? Kinda embarrassing to say the least. Should a child be embarrassed for believing its parents? So, what of a belief in Santa Claus? Who should be more embarrassed? Those promoting the lie or the deceived? One of the main reasons I cautioned, in my younger days, parents not to lie to their children....because how would they handle when they discovered the truth? They've been lied to about Santa, what about Jesus? Setting a kid up to be skeptical. So, the Bible, The religion of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob makes no sense to you. I don't understand that. I'm sorry for you. You say you've studied it? And it still doesn't make sense to you? I think it makes perfect sense. Of course, we all have many questions, but if we've been given a love for the truth, we will continue to seek answers, even though it may lead us away from the turditions of our forefathers. If you care to, I'd be happy to hear any of your objections to what the scriptures reveal, as truth, with which you disagree.

He claimed to be the Son of Man, and the Son of God...as He called God, His Father....for which the "traditionalists" wanted to stone Him for blasphemy. Didn't make any sense to them....I guess. It does to me. I believe Him. "2) Yet was the passion that drove the growth of the faith. It was a Jewish preoccupation so a little odd that his followers wrote nothing about him during his ministry." A Jewish preoccupation? His "followers" were common men, not scholars in the "Jewish" turdition. Not a lot of writing amongst the commoners I suspect...."Paper" was expensive. "3) That would be suggestive of a lack of historical information" So? When Jesus was doing miracles He often told the recipients not to tell anyone, either. Even the disciples couldn't understand that instruction, because they wanted everyone to know! Typical prideful humans....apparently. Obviously, you are also aware of the conspiracy to punish people who, after Jesus' death, were commanded NOT to preach in His name...and that the "authorities" actually sent out lies instead!...which has obviously worked on you and others. "4) No we don't know who wrote them. The names attached were done after the fact. The one we do know for certain was Luke, but other than the name we don't know who he was." maybe you don't know, but I do. john wrote the gospel of John, Matthew wrote the gospel that carries his name and Mark wrote his account.

@waynus Like I've said before, There are many 'types' of people. Some types, even from birth seem to be more 'skeptical' than others, for example. When I was a kid, I remember wanting to expose the Santa lie. Two other cousins my age and myself, sat on the steps where we knew Grandpa was going to put on the costume. The rest of the kids were disappointed, but we proved to ourselves there was not a real Santa Claus. He didn't show up that year! Certainly, many have come in Jesus' name and lied about Him. He mentioned that before He left. Don't doubt you a bit about forefathers lying about Him. Those telling you He never existed may be lying, too? Doubting Thomas....said he wouldn't believe the "story" about Jesus' resurrection from the dead, unless he felt the wounds in His hands and feet, personally. No problem. Jesus appeared to him, too and showed him, but He also said that those who believe without "seeing" were happier....or blessed. You didn't answer my question if you believed Jesus' statement about all who were in their grave would be resurrected. Presumably, you still believe you came from non-existence and are heading into non-existence? This is all you got, so I wouldn't blame you if you didn't want to waste your precious time arguing with fools like me who believe in Jesus. So, why do you seem to care what I believe? maybe you are like I was when I was a kid, trying to expose the Santa lie? But, funny thing happened....Those adults tricked us....Santa did show up, while my Grandpa was sitting in his chair! (Turned out it was my dad!) But I didn't know that then. Of all the "philosophies" about life and reality I've heard, Jesus' makes the most sense to me.

@waynus The destruction of Herod's Temple in 70 A.D. or Solomon's? Not sure when that was. Maybe 536B.C.? There has been much "teaching" that has been wrong, in lots of groups. Men are flawed in that way of course. A young friend, tonight, mentioned a saying he coined: "Arrogance is a learning disability." True, I think. So, when men are arrogant students coupled with arrogant teachers, it is no wonder there is so much confusion in the world. I believe that our forefathers inherited lies from their fathers, though they probably didn't know that....just doing the best they could....maybe, or maybe they, too, were arrogant....wanting to be right, rather than simply seeking truth. I gotta tell you, though, that the idea that there was no Jesus is so absurd to me, that I can hardly believe people actually believe that. What about resurrection? Do you believe that which Jesus said: "All who are in their graves, will hear His voice and come forth, some to a resurrection of life, and others to a resurrection of condemnation....(for a while?)?

@waynus Well, you're right about rabbinic tradition being disparate, but you brought it up. Generally, I think there were three main branches, The Pharisees, Sadducees and the Essenes, of "Judaism". Why do you find it interesting that the Gospel accounts seem to be critical of them?

@Naomi I believe "they", the conspirators, have been trying to establish a global governmental system for probably hundreds of years. David Rockefeller's own words and confessions would suffice to begin. The Georgia Guidestones, The Illuminati, established coinciding with the establishment of America in 1776, The Bible's own prophecy in Revelation about a world government requiring everyone to be marked, without which, no one could buy or sell anything...The Council on Foreign Relations, The Trilateral Commission, The World Bank, The IMF, World Trade Organization, The U.N. itself. Agenda 21, Agenda 2030....all support a decrease in the world's population to around 500 Million...to a more "sustainable", less consuming population! It's all about control by those who consider themselves the elite. One needs only ask themselves this one question, too: Why would they put a symbol of an all-seeing eye on top of a pyramid on the dollar bill in the USA? Ever seen a pyramid in the U.S.?

@RobBlair When it comes to anarchy, I have always dismissed it out of hand as being a preposterous idea. Human nature, for the time being is 'deceitfully wicked' seeking evil continually...etc. Therefore, we need 'government'. When the government is righteous, people rejoice and can experience liberty. When government is tyrannical or unrighteous, the people mourn, being enslaved and not having liberty. Until human nature is changed, becoming "angels" so-to-speak, we seem to need some authority over us. Everyone doing what is right in their own eyes has already been tried and was found to be wanting. Anyway, that's the way I see it. I am interested, however, in reading other thoughts, as I also know that a system that produces evil people is not what we need in our journey....
