I’ll start by noting that I do not know Nova Scotia’s situation or policies so I am responding with Complete Knowledge based on the practice in nearby Maine. Maine has an area called the Great North Woods that is a conglomeration of several large landowners that for several generations was leased out to Paper and Timber Mills (about 12,000,000 acres ... TWO Massachusetts’ ) ie PRIVATELY Owned Land. This area was originally harvested strictly for the timber that was used to build Wooden Ships and a good bit of America ... even before it was the USA. The really common comment by Most People is that they decry the loss of “Old Growth” forests ... which Simply. Don’t. Exist. In the North American Continent. Before the “White Man” came along, the Native American Indians frequently did massive burns to eliminate undergrowth and keep the forests healthy. The bulk of the land in the Great North Woods was regularly broken into vast “lots” for harvesting based on a 12 year growth cycle (12 years being most suitable for paper pulpwood) and cut down in patches where one year’s “lot” didn’t connect with the next year’s lot on consecutive years. Part of the harvesting REQUIRED replanting (just like any crop) and, actual careful husbanding. Not to mention they left the stumps and cutoffs behind (basically, 1,000,000 acres per year but obviously, not all in a single location) These “forests” were “crops” ... like corn only longer. The landowners and the Companies depending on these crops would no more neglect or purposefully destroy the land and the land’s ability to regrow than any farmer would purposefully destroy his own cornfields. To give you some idea of the “Destruction” ... a person can backpack clear through the “unspoiled” 209,000+ acre Baxter State Forest and then several MILES into the Great North Woods without even noticing the change I admit that over the years of backpacking and canoeing through areas that touched or could see these, I originally thought they looked like hell ... looked horrible ... it took awhile for me to understand what I was seeing. First, “clear cut” areas do not tend to be truly clear cut ... there are always a few healthy older trees left standing ... usually of a different species ... moreover, the clear cut areas quickly become a very lively community full of used and welcome habitats for hundreds of different types of animals ... truthfully, forests themselves might be good for sheltering in, but they are almost useless for supporting life as they are almost barren in terms of food.
