Was the American Revolution a progressive or a conservative movement? What is your interpretation?
govols comments on Mar 25, 2020:
Naomi, can you offer definitions for your terms conservative and progressive?
TimTuolomne replies on Mar 26, 2020:
@Naomi. I appreciate your post. For the purposes of politics today, a conservative has: "A desire to preserve the political philosophy and rules of government articulated in the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution." - From "What Americans Mean When They Say They're Conservative" by Conor Friedersdorf, January 27, 2012. Classic liberals called themselves liberals because they stood for the freedom of the individuals. Even today Australian John Howard is a member of the Liberal Party, and is possibly to the right of Ronald Reagan. In the United States, we would call Howard a Conservative. And in the US, where political correctness drives parties re-branding themselves, socialists called themselves liberals because it made their philosophy of state control of individual rights sound more like freedom for the individual - something most intelligent people call a "lie." So the definitions also depend on "when." Generally, socialism is a modern version of the opposition to individual rights, and calls for pre-eminence of the state over individual rights. Think Karl Marx, Stalin, Franklin D. Roosevelt, Fidel Castro, Bernie Sanders, Angela Merkel, probably the Labour Party in the UK... you get the idea, no matter what political brand they call themselves; liberal, democratic, progressive.... Our Founders were called "liberal progressives" of that time, and the philosophically the same as Abraham Lincoln, Calvin Coolidge, Margaret Thacher, Ronald Reagan, Ted Cruz and Donald Trump, all of whom called themselves Republicans. These all believed or believe in individual rights, and subjugation of the government to those rights, which is embodied in the original Constitution. Today's body of law in the US has vacated the central philosophy of the Constitution that individual rights are pre-eminent. The Federal bureaucracy is now able to control the individual in almost every way. Conservatives in the US are dedicated to restoring the original Constitution and individual rights. Socialists, modern "liberals," modern "progressives," Communists, and some of the Democrat party are committed to continued erosion of individual rights and supremacy of the Federal government. There is a third group who are opportunists, who will label themselves whatever gets them elected, whose desire is power, and who probably have no interest in the philosophy of individual freedom or government supremacy, unless saying so or destroying either increases their power. In my opinion, that includes most of the Democrat leadership, and most in the Labour Party leadership. https://reason.com/2020/03/25/most-politicians-are-disingenuous-opportunists-the-coronavirus-outbreak-only-makes-that-more-obvious/?utm_medium=email

Language is indispensable to understanding each other, and definitions are therefore critical. The smearing of "labels" as somehow vaguely unfair is to miss that point. Generally those who do that are leftists, who wish to destroy whatever philosophy governs the World by first disposing of definitions. And those with authority issues and eager to destroy "the system," are only too happy to parrot such verbal molotov cocktails.

So not just geothermal heat. That much heat here would have killed off life long ago, without "Climate Change." Meanwhile back on Earth, anyone who chooses to actually look at the CO2 record will find a steady decline in the last several thousand years. If the trend continued, all plant life would have died soon. The human contribution of about 3% to the CO2 in modern times will have delayed the death of plant life by a few hundred years.

@Clarken. Do as you feel is right. I have written to every President since I was voting age, and when I had occasion to visit Washington, my Congressman knew me by name, because I frequently wrote. I asked him that very question. He said "When I get a bunch of personally written letters on a subject, I know I'd better pay attention." And I've occasionally seen my representatives change, and suspected that a change in presidential policy might have been affected by letters from constituents like me. The vote matters far more, as it should be. But I know for certain that writing is better than not. I am grateful for your service Major. You must be a smart guy to have retired at that rank. Definitely, and right under all our noses. "Critical Social Justice" is defined very well in a piece by James Lindsay, which you can search and find on IDW. Lindsay describes the thing you are enduring every day. People are simply uncivil to each other about everything. That is by design to be corrosive to freedom, actual justice, and everything that exists politically, so the alternative growing in the dark like a virus (Lindsay's metaphor) eventually takes over. The alternative is simple. It is to not respond in kind. To lovingly avoid the negative, and clearly, patiently affirm the positive. Simple in principle. The thing about :"Critical Social Justice" is that it appeals to our human tribal nature to condemn those we don't really understand very well. And being savagely critical has become wrongly associated with discernment, intelligence and paradoxically, "virtue." It is none of those things. So we must work at it.

@KeVince We disagree about the reason steam and Stirling engines are not produced. It isn't that they are too efficient. They are too complex and expensive to produce - even more expensive than hybrids. One reason hybrids exist is because they have been artificially supported as a technology. Not by a conspiracy. By consumers who want to feel superior and virtuous for saving the planet. The political current of "Climate Change" as swept along many unproven technologies that people all of a sudden are convinced are viable - or should be, without any significant advance in 50 years. Like batteries and photovoltaics. Many of these people feel that just because "virtuous" people demand advances in those technologies, they will automatically happen - as if all of the advances that entrepreneurs like Edison developed could have happened in the Dark Ages if only the "virtuous" demanded it.

Kinda takes the steam out of some of the sensational reporting doesn't it? Here are some additional facts: 1. Not a bioengineered virus. 2. Dr Li Wenliang lost his life due to inadequate protocols, after posting a warning in Wuhan 30 December, being arrested and forced to sign a statement that he had exaggerated the danger. 3. COVID-19 went unknown and unrestricted worldwide from December to February, so most of us have probably been exposed. 4. COVID-19 is a little more deadly than the flu, but very deadly to those over 70 years old, and smokers (of anything). Everyone else will probably survive. It does spread faster than usual. It has a 13 day transmissibility, so even if you are asymptomatic, on the 29th, everyone who obeyed the advisory will not be infectious. You might want to avoid those who hoarded and disobeyed the advisory. The former because they don't give a crap about you, and the latter because they are probably still infectious. 5. The trajectories of the number of cases are leveling out for China (maybe) and South Korea. You can see that by the increase in the number of days to double the number of infections. If the US does the same, we should see no more than a few hundred deaths - mostly of the elderly.
