What is one book you want to recommend to everyone and why?
KeithThroop comments on Dec 4, 2020:
As a Christian, I would of course recommend the Bible because I believe it is the word of God and reveals how we may be saved from our sins.
Forgive quickly. Forget Slowly.
KeithThroop comments on Dec 4, 2020:
I think we should always be ready to forgive those who are truly sorry for what they have done. But we cannot, of course, always formally extend forgiveness to them unless they are truly sorry for what they have done. Once we have extended forgiveness to them, however, we must then resolve not to hold what they have done against them any longer. We must not keep bringing it up, using it as a weapon, but instead we must allow them the opportunity to regain our trust. True repentance means they will want to regain our trust, and true forgiveness means we will want to be able to trust them again.

"Tolerance of intolerance is cowardice." – Ayaan Hirsi Ali
KeithThroop comments on Dec 4, 2020:
The word *tolerance* has been co-opted by the Left and badly misused. They think tolerance means agreeing with them about what should or should not be tolerated and how we should deal with what they think should not be tolerated. In other words, they only tolerate the views of others *if they agree with their own*, and they seek to *suppress* those views which disagree with their own, which is actually being *intolerant*.

KeithThroop comments on Nov 28, 2020:
“Poetry appeals more directly to the whole person that prose does. It stimulates our imaginations, arouses our emotions, feeds our intellects and addresses our wills. Perhaps this is why poetry is the preferred mode of communication of the prophets, whose purpose depends on capturing the attention of their listeners and persuading them their message is urgent. More than this, poetry is pleasurable. It is attractive to read and even more so to read aloud (or sing)” (Tremper Longman, *How to Read the Psalms*, p. 92). That is a quote I like to cite when teaching how to interpret ancient Hebrew poetry found in the Bible. It is a part of a graduate level course I teach on Biblical Hermeneutics. Anyway, much of the Old Testament is actually written in poetic form, often alternating with historical narrative prose.

What is everyone listening to ?
KeithThroop comments on Nov 25, 2020:
I listen to many genres of music. For example, in my car I have my SiriusXM channels set for every decade starting on the 40's on 4 all the way up through the 90's on 9. I also have a a Gospel station, a country station (which focuses mostly on older country music), the Beatles station, a Classic Rock Station, and a couple of stations which focus on soft rock from across the decades. I switch between all these while driving, especially on longer trips. Lately I've been listening to some U2, Genesis, and Bee Gees, along with old Everly Brothers, Platters, The Young Rascals, Dave Clark Five, and Buddy Holly stuff around the house, mixed in with Motown from the Temptations and Al Green. But I've also been listening to Randy Stonehill, The Newsboys, and Keith Green from the Christian music scene. I'm pretty eclectic in my musical tastes.
And it's an unbroken pattern.

Ayanna Pressley: Canceling Student Debt Will Ensure ‘Equitable’ Economic Recovery ...
KeithThroop comments on Nov 23, 2020:
I dont' want to sound harsh, but where I come from people should be responsible for their own debts. If we want to help with the problem of all this crushing student debt, then we should probably rethink whether or not so many young people really need a traditional college education in the first place, as well as thinking about measures to reduce how expensive it is. Of course, those on the Left want to keep encouraging as many young people to go to college as possible, whether or not they end up actually needing or using the degrees they obtain, since this is their mechanism for indoctrinating them. Then they promise to relieve the debt with the hopes of teaching them to be even more grateful to and dependent upon the state. It's a bad idea. They should be encouraged not to get into debt in the first place, and then, when they do incur debt, they should be expected to pay it like the rest of us. Oh, and lest some should think I am being totally heartless, I will just say that I spent about a decade as a student myself, seven years full-time and 3 years part time, obtaining a B.A. and an M.Div. that was 104 semester hours of additional work. I know how expensive school is, but I also know that hard work and responsibility enabled me to make it through with minimal debt and to pay off what debt I did have on my own. By God's grace I taught my children the same principles of hard work and responsibility, and two of them have done the same in getting their own college degrees. So, I know full well that it can be done.

I got pretty drunk, but we had a great time playing cards. I used to do that kind of thing a lot for a number of years, but it was not too long after that particular evening that I began to realize I was developing a real drinking problem. I finally quit drinking and smoking when I was 21, and those were two of the best decisions I ever made. Anyway, it's amazing what memories and feelings a good painting can bring back.

How many "Christian leaders" have you come across arrogating the title "apostle" to themselves?
KeithThroop comments on Nov 22, 2020:
I am in agreement with your point. There are no more Apostles after those who initially served as a foundation for the church, and Rev. 21:14 certainly does denote a special place for the original twelve (no doubt assuming the twelfth is Matthias rather than Judas Iscariot). However, I would observe that the Bible clearly identifies other such Apostles as well, the Apostle Paul being most notable among them. Wayne Grudem, after making it clear that "there are no more apostles today, and we are to expect no more", offers the following brief explanation for your consideration: > **Were Apostles?** The initial group of apostles numbered twelve—the eleven original disciples who remained after Judas died, plus Matthias, who replaced Judas: “And they cast lots for them, and the lot fell on Matthias; and he was enrolled with the eleven apostles” (Acts 1:26). So important was this original group of twelve apostles, the “charter members” of the office of apostle, that we read that their names are inscribed on the foundations of the heavenly city, the New Jerusalem: “And the wall of the city had twelve foundations, and on them the twelve names of the twelve apostles of the Lamb” (Rev. 21:14). > > We might at first think that such a group could never be expanded, that no one could be added to it. But then Paul clearly claims that he, also, is an apostle. And Acts 14:14 calls both Barnabas and Paul apostles: “when the apostles Barnabas and Paul heard of it....” So with Paul and Barnabas there are fourteen “apostles of Jesus Christ.” > > Then James the brother of Jesus (who was not one of the twelve original disciples) seems to be called an apostle in Galatians 1:19: Paul tells how, when he went to Jerusalem, “I saw none of the other apostles except James the Lord’s brother.” Then in Galatians 2:9 James is classified with Peter and John as “pillars” of the Jerusalem church. And in Acts 15:13-21, James, along with Peter, exercises a significant leadership function in the Jerusalem Council, a function which would be appropriate to the office of apostle. Furthermore, when Paul is listing the resurrection appearances of Jesus he once again readily classifies James with the apostles: > > Then he appeared to James then to all the apostles. Last of all, as to one untimely born, he appeared also to me. For I am the least of the apostles, unfit to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. (1 Cor. 15:7-9) > > Finally, the fact that James could write the New Testament epistle which bears his name would also be entirely consistent with his having the authority which belonged to the office of apostle, the authority to write words which were the words of God. All these considerations combine to indicate that ...

This is why we believe it takes a miraculous work of God in a person's heart to enable him/her to accept the truth, especially to believe in Jesus who said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me" (John 14:6 NKJ). ONE of the most popular beliefs of the day is that God loves everybody, and the very fact that it is...
KeithThroop comments on Nov 18, 2020:
I think it would be better to say that God loves unbelievers *in a different manner* than He loves believers. If you are interested in what I mean, I would offer the following article I once wrote on John 3:16: https://reformedbaptistblog.com/2015/04/01/gods-great-and-gracious-love-john-316-part-1-teaching-outline/ Here is a portion of that article: > But, someone may ask, “If the word *world* in this verse is to be taken in a restricted sense, as referring only to the elect, then must we conclude that God does not love everyone in the world? Must we say that God loves only believers?” My answer to this question is, “No, we should not conclude that God does not love everyone in the world.” In fact, I think there are other passages that teach us that God does love even unbelievers. Consider, for example, Jesus’ teaching in the sermon on the Mount: > > NKJ Matthew 5:43-45 You have heard that it was said, “You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.” 44 But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, 45 that you may be sons of your Father in heaven; for He makes His sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. > > In other words, if we want to be like our heavenly Father, we will love our enemies as He loves his enemies and thus causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust. There is, then, a real sense in which God loves even the non-elect who never believe in Him. But He does not love them as He loves believers. There is a special sense in which God loves the elect who believe in Christ. And it is when this special, electing love is in view that the Bible speaks of God’s hatred for sinners, such as when God said, “Jacob I have loved, but Esau I have hated” (Rom. 9:13, citing Mal. 1:2b-3a). > > Now, all you have to do to see that God showed His love to Esau is to look back at the accounts in the Old Testament to see how greatly God blessed him (e.g. Gen. 33:9; 36:6-8 ff; Deut. 2:5; Josh. 24:4). However, none of these blessings included Esau’s having been chosen for salvation. In fact, the author of Hebrews uses Esau as an example of an irremediable apostate and warns professing Christians not to fall into the same trap into which he fell: > > NKJ Hebrews 12:14-17 Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord: 15 looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled; 16 lest there be any fornicator or profane person like Esau, who for one morsel of food sold his birthright. 17 For ...
