Should parents have a choice of where to send their children to school?
KeithThroop comments on Aug 14, 2020:
Yes, parents should have the choice, and I support the idea of charter schools. I am nervous about the idea of school vouchers, however. My concern is that such vouchers will inevitably be seen as subsidies and that once they are accepted the government will then try to tell us what we can do if we take them. This will end up taking away the very choice we seek to have over the education of our children. I prefer the kind of competition that charter schools brings, so that parents can choose the kind of school to which they want to send their children. This may make it more difficult to pay for schooling for some parents, which is one of the factors (although not the the primary one) that led my wife and I to homeschool all three of our children. I'm sure I need to think about this more, though.

KeithThroop comments on Aug 14, 2020:
I think this article provides a good example of why so many people these days are beginning not to trust "science." It is becoming more and more obvious all the time that the presuppositions of scientists have a great deal to do how they go about their work and influences the conclusions they reach, as the writer of the article has shown. Science appears in many ways to have been co-opted by politics and the culture war. In fact, many people see this happening with the current COVID-19 pandemic as well. Which "science" do we trust? Will the real Anthony Fauci please stand up? Etc.

KeithThroop comments on Aug 12, 2020:
Yes, as I said in another recent comment, Bill Kristol lost any credibility with me a long time ago, especially since he is too stubborn to change his mind. I'm a U.S. citizen and a Conservative who did not vote for President Trump in the last election because I did not trust him. And I had no good reason at that time to trust him. He will be getting my vote this November, however, because, despite some issues I have with him, he has proven to be more conservative in governing than the last couple of Republican presidents I voted for. I also like that he has taken on the mainstream media in the way that he has thus far. Many like me have seen how left leaning the media have been for decades and have been frustrated at the cowardice of many conservatives toward them. By the way, know many conservative Evangelicals like myself who have had the very same journey with President Trump. So, if anything, I suspect that he has an even stronger electoral grip on the Evangelical crowd than before. Anyway, I should think that if Kristol really was the conservative he has claimed to be in the past, that he would have come around by now, like so many of us have.

KeithThroop comments on Aug 12, 2020:
The only reason this is an issue is that the Left has made it an issue. I really don't care what a person's ancestors believed or did. I care about what the person himself/herself currently believes and does. But it is worth raising because they should at least be expected to uphold their own standard. Yet they never do. Standards and moral principles are what they expect of others whom they do not deem smart enough to make up their own standard as they go. In their view, it is impossible for them to be hypocritical or inconsistent; that is something only other people who aren't among the elite are capable of doing. In their view, the ends justify the means, but only if they are what they deem to be the proper ends. Only they are intelligent and sophisticated enough to be able to determine what those ends should be. Sounds crazy, I know, but there you have it.

I was struck once again by the silliness of the mayor when reading the end of the article: > "President Trump recently announced he would send federal agents to Chicago to help local authorities fight crime as part of an operation that started last year. > > Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot pushed back in a letter to the White House, writing: “We need you, as president, to take a leadership role in enacting meaningful and common-sense gun legislation, which you so far have refused to do.” Yeah, because passing more gun legislation that won't be enforced any better than previous legislation (which is sufficient already, by the way) is going to stop the looting and rioting. Right. Now I know I have entered the Twilight Zone. Or is that the Lightfoot Zone?
New York’s Lawless NRA Lawsuit [nationalreview.com]
KeithThroop comments on Aug 12, 2020:
This passage pretty much sums up the point of the article: > "The NRA, once the most effective organization of its kind, has indeed been mired in incompetent leadership and financial mismanagement for years. Its evolution from sporting club and canny Second Amendment advocate to full-service culture-war outfit has done no favors either for the organization itself or, more important, for the cause to which it purports to be committed. As much as we share the group’s commitment to the Bill of Rights, we would not be entirely surprised if actionable financial wrongdoing were uncovered. > > At the same time, the effort to dissolve the NRA is nonetheless a plainly partisan political attack. The point here is not to fight nonprofit fraud but a Democratic effort to embarrass and hobble a political opponent, to burden it with expensive and cumbrous litigation, and to weaponize the power of the attorney general’s office for partisan ends." I agree with the view that this is a partisan attack, but I take issue with the author's assessment of the NRA that "Its evolution from sporting club and canny Second Amendment advocate to full-service culture-war outfit has done no favors." Exactly how was the NRA to avoid being caught up in the culture-war? How was it not supposed to defend all the principles upon which this country was founded when they stand or fall together? How was it to avoid being caught up in the culture-war when the enemies of our culture constantly attacked them for their positions? Anyway, although I have often appreciated the National Review, I have sometimes found that, in their attempt to sound objective, they have said stupid stuff like that and made some conservatives or conservative groups look extreme when they really are not, or at least to look more extreme than they really are. Just an impression I've gotten.

At any rate, I am the very type of guy this woman is describing, and I want to say that we need to stand our ground and refuse to apologize for things that are completely taken out of context and misinterpreted through a politically correct lens. We should not apologize when we haven't done anything wrong, and the mere fact that someone chooses to take offense at something doesn't mean that we have done something wrong. These days it usually just means that they have become hypersensitive and have begun to read into things in a manner that says much more about them than about the supposed offender.

KeithThroop comments on Aug 4, 2020:
I just returned home about an hour ago from a meeting of my Veterans of Foreign Wars post where I live in Bloomington, Illinois, U.S.A. (VFW Post 454). We stood at attention and saluted the flag while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the meeting, and then we stood at attention again and saluted the flag at the end of the meeting. We do these things out of respect for our country and the flag which represents it. We do the same thing when the National anthem is played. We stand and salute the flag until the anthem ends. Now, I stand at attention and salute because I am a veteran, but civilians have always stood with their hands over their hearts while facing the flag when saying the Pledge of Allegiance or when the National Anthem is played. They have always done so out of respect for our country and for the flag which represents our country. It is basic patriotism. It is Citizenship 101 stuff, and we shouldn't have to defend doing it. On the contrary, those who refuse to do it should be ashamed of themselves, especially after all this country has given them.

KeithThroop comments on Aug 2, 2020:
"IMHO there is one major requirement before we can exercise 'Critical Thinking' That would be to have an objective outlook - some would call this 'an open mind' on whatever the subject happens to be." Does such a description of "critical thinking" preclude a person's arriving at settled convictions about particular issues? Must one forever have "an open mind" about any particular issue? Your description could be understood that way without further qualification. Also, how does such a description allow for the recognition of one's own presuppositions and the role that such presuppositions play in assessing arguments or evidence? In my experience, recognizing one's own presuppositions and the role that they play helps to potentially check or correct those presuppositions. Those who are unaware of such things are usually not very good "critical thinkers," in my own humble opinion.

This is another article that seems to be very slanted in its perspective. The U.S. has conducted freedom of navigation exercises many times and in many places around the world for decades. A Biblical Response to Gay Marriage -- Although I have already contributed this item to the biblical...
KeithThroop comments on Jul 27, 2020:
@iThink I think I can understand why you didn't pick up on the defense of my position that was contained in the article I linked. I titled the post here as "A Biblical Response to Gay Marriage," but what I was linking to was really a response to another pastor who was criticizing the typical conservative, Christian response to gay marriage. Thus there wasn't really a complete biblical defense of our position, since it was not necessary in that context. But there certainly was a partial biblical defense of it, and it was enough to make the point. For example, I cited at least three clear passages regarding this matter (two at some length, and one via a link that allowed the reading of the text when hovering over it). These three passages alone, taken in the larger context of the post -- not to mention the larger context of the Bible -- were sufficient to demonstrate that a proper understanding of the Bible would lead to the prohibition of gay marriage. Here I will give you all three passages again for your convenience. I will do so in biblical order rather than the order they appeared in the article, but that shouldn't make a difference. First, when answering a question about divorce and reminding His detractors of what they all would have accepted as the foundational text on marriage, Jesus assumed what they all would have assumed, namely that God created mankind male and female with the intention that a man and a woman would marry: > NKJ Matthew 19:3-6 The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, and saying to Him, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?" 4 And He answered and said to them, "Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning 'made them male and female,' [Gen. 1:27] ] 5 and said, 'For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh'"? [Gen. 2:24] 6 So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate." Now, the reference to a man and a woman becoming "one flesh" may include more than simply their physical union through intercourse, but it certainly doesn't include any less, and this is intended by the Creator as one important aspect of marital union. In the context of Genesis, of course, it also went along with the idea that this was how the earth would be populated. This is the persistent view of marriage throughout the Bible. Nowhere does it even contemplate the possibility that two men or two women would marry, an idea which runs against God's purpose in creating mankind male and female in the first place. Thus the apostle Paul had the purpose of God in creating mankind male and female in mind when he openly condemned homosexual lust and practice, which brings me to the ...

"Not to put too fine a point on it, the goal of the United States is global domination.
KeithThroop comments on Jul 25, 2020:
Aside from the fact that the author doesn't really define precisely what he means by "global domination" (unless I missed it in my brief perusal of the article), I cannot agree with much of his assessment. For example, he seems to think that the U.S. is simply forcing themselves upon their European allies by keeping bases in so many of their countries, when it reality these countries have wanted our bases so that they do not have to defend themselves alone but can count on American military power to help defend them. And, despite the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Russia is still up to its old tricks and cannot be trusted no matter how much they seem to be cozying up to France and Germany, so even these two countries aren't exactly pleading for us to remove our bases from Europe. But the main thing is that, to stick with the current example, if we really have been all about "global domination," there wouldn't even be a France or Germany now. We would have made them U.S. possessions following WW2. As it stands, however, we've only asked for enough land to bury our dead after liberating France and helping to establish Germany as an economic powerhouse, along with enough land for bases not only to protect our own interests as their allies but also to protect them. The point is that our history belies such an accusation, and I can see no good evidence that things are different now. As for the article, is seems to me quite a bit of supposition without real, concrete evidence.
New channel....Looks ok. [youtu.be]
KeithThroop comments on Jul 24, 2020:
@DeplorableToo I used to get One America News and really enjoyed watching Liz Wheeler's show. But, sadly, we no longer get that channel. I didn't know it was on PlutoTv for free though, so I will check it out. As Tucker Carlson would say, "Thank you for that!"
I'm interested in examples, proof.
KeithThroop comments on Jul 24, 2020:
I'm not sure what this has to do with Biblical Christianity, but I'm pretty sure that, if the Jews were so powerful that they could have been controlling everything in Germany behind the scenes, then it seems highly unlikely that they could have been so easily and quickly rounded up, put in death camps, and exterminated by the millions. I think it is much more likely -- in fact, a certainty -- that Hitler and the Nazis were actually the ones with the power behind the scenes, who eventually came out into the open, and who were every bit as racist and murderous as their actions have since shown them to have been. In other words, the history most of us have heard from the generation that actually fought and won that war is correct.

I doubt that Joe Biden was ever really a moderate. I suspect what we are seeing now is what he has always been but had to pretend not to be in order to get elected in years past.

KeithThroop comments on Jul 24, 2020:
We constantly seek to remind our fellow Americans that we are a nation based on a certain set of principles, principles that underly and are reflected in our Constitution. Thus, our unity as a nation is not based on being part of any particular race, cultural or ethnic background, or creed. Anyone who lives here, or who comes here with the desire to be a citizen, and embraces these principles IS an American. Period. This is what the Legion is about, maintaining this vision. I believe it is a worthy cause.

Which slogans, if any, would you suggest NBA players wear in the coming season?
KeithThroop comments on Jul 22, 2020:
They should wear their names on the backs of their shirts, and they should keep their political comments to their personal time, such as when they are being interviewed by reporters. Good grief! They already have a big enough megaphone with which to make their views known. Why should I have to be subjected to it every time I see any one of them make a play on the court? I've already said goodbye to the NFL, but now it looks like I'll be saying goodbye to the NBA as well. I hope the MLB doesn't louse things up the same way. I'm a real Chicago Cubs fan. But, to be sure, I will not support the politicization of our sports, which for a long time were a place to be free from such politics and culture wars. I suspect there are many like me out there who feel the same way.

I live in Bloomington, Illinois, just a couple hours drive south of Chicago, and I am glad we are not having the issues they are having there. I'm not sure I trust this poll any more than most other polls. But it wouldn't surprise me if it was true that a majority thinks this, given the constant promotion of the idea in academia and the media. It just doesn't happen to be true that American society is racist.
