They've been doing it since 2008 with no trouble. The entire developed world is suffering from stagnation due to an aging population. The US has suffered less because of immigration and superpower status (diverse economy, powerful military, and reserve currency). Quantitative easing and fiscal policy have stimulated some demand, warding off stagnation, and if anything have protected us from deflation like Japan has suffered from. I wouldn't be worried about stagflation, especially in the absence of a supply shock in raw materials (not money). The coronavirus pandemic and OPEC policy are causing a decrease in demand at the same time that there is an increase in supply. Deficit spending remains low as a percentage of GDP, taxes remain low, and QE doesn't really get money into the real economy. Banks still need to make loans and employers still need to raise wages. If there is to be a real direct stimulus in the short-term, it's likely to pass through to grocery stores and landlords rather than generate any serious demand.
