WilyRickWiles comments on Jun 25, 2020:
I appreciate your distinction between personal culpability and the state's liability. I would support your proposals and agree that they are just and feasible if administratively challenging. I also think that our polarized politics would benefit from a truth and reconciliation process. Ultimately, I think the most effective, easiest, and least divisive way of providing reparations is through social democracy. The Federal Reserve has become very good at keeping the financial system and large corporations capitalized. If there were the political will, perhaps we could make them provide the capital that people need to shape their lives, at least by easing the budgets of states and local governments whose pensions were left uninsured and unregulated when private ones were rescued by the federal government. The legacy of slavery, Jim Crow, and redlining already ensures that African Americans have less capital. Bank consolidation and top heavy financing that redistributes ownership to private equity is increasing inequality for everyone else too. Minorities during the civil rights movement demanded programs like ethnic and gender studies in order to increase participation in the public sphere only for those programs to be devalued and public spending cut as the population grew. Ordinary people are increasingly well-educated but become slaves to debt because of those cuts and because they don't have the inheritances of past generations. Neoliberals are uninterested in reversing the trend, but Stephanie Kelton, an MMT economist, recently wrote a book about the policies that could change this called "The Deficit Myth."

The IDW has been quick to accuse its ideological opponents of being part of conspiracies of influence, but I think they would be more trusted and influential themselves if they were open about the funders, institutions, and networks that support them. I also think they would have a more attractive image if they projected confidence and expertise rather than victimhood. Perhaps they could include someone who can use fluency in identity politics to communicate their own dogma to leftists even though they don't subscribe to it. A more explicit ideology about the role of history in politics would be informative too. Do they think history should inform politics or do they see themselves as outside history? And how about myth? Is it a wellspring of political narratives or is there a line where rationalism is abandoned in pursuit of bad faith arguments? Moreover, when does associating with ethnoreligious chauvinists of various degree create worse problems than identity politics? Should more nuanced critiques of identity politics from the left (e.g. Adolph Reed, Jr.) be engaged or must a hard line be maintained?

Interesting that she brings up "status anxiety." That is the very reason that the right takes issue with statues being taken down. As I've said before: If people are going to take issue with the removal of statues and portraits because "they erase history," we should consider whether such objects provide an accurate and full account of that history. And if they don't, then we owe it to those people to correct the record, as it were, through addition if possible, and subtraction if needed. Or they could leave history to the history books and concede that they are fighting to protect what the statues represent. At least we could all be on the same page about their meaning, even if our moral judgments of that meaning were opposed.

WilyRickWiles comments on Jun 21, 2020:
Keep in mind that a lot of the outrages people complain about on here are false, distorted, overblown, or hypocritical, and planted by the far right propaganda machine. The Republican Party needs its voters in a perpetual 1960's-style moral panic in order to get the turnout from aging white voters that it needs to remain a viable party. Moreover, its racism serves to keep working class people divided and prevents them from joining together to challenge the interests backing the Republican party.

WilyRickWiles comments on Jun 21, 2020:
The original author in the Patch seems to have had a peculiar bone to pick since he got fired as editor at the Chicago Reader for putting a racist symbol on the paper's cover. The great-grandson, however, seems to be making a more nuanced point than the headline indicates: how dare the company profit from images of subservient black people for decades, and white people participate in that, and then paper over it without offering reparations? ""This is an injustice for me and my family. This is part of my history, sir," Larnell Evans Sr. told me. "The racism they talk about, using images from slavery, that comes from the other side — white people. This company profits off images of our slavery. And their answer is to erase my great-grandmother's history. A black female. … It hurts."" "Quaker Oats also used Harrington's pancake recipe, Evans and a nephew claimed in a 2014 lawsuit seeking $3 billion from Quaker Oats for not paying royalties to Harrington's descendants. The attempt to make Quaker Oats pay restitution in federal court failed." "Evans, a 66-year-old Marine Corps veteran living on disability in North Carolina, says his family and black Americans deserve more from corporations such as Quaker Oats than an acknowledgment that, yes, they profited off images of slavery — the likeness of Green and Harrington from syrup bottles — before removing the evidence from grocery store shelves. "How many white people were raised looking at characters like Aunt Jemima at breakfast every morning? How many white corporations made all them profits, and didn't give us a dime? I think they should have to look at it. They can't just wipe it out while we still suffer," he said. "After making all that money —and now's the time when black people are saying we want restitution for slavery — they're just going to erase history like it didn't happen? ... They're not going to give us nothing? What gives them the right?""
Hello.
WilyRickWiles comments on Jun 20, 2020:
It depends on your values. Both parties cater to powerful interests like private equity. The Republicans generally cater more to individual billionaires, energy companies, and defense companies, and the Democrats more to the professional class (e.g. executives, managers, doctors), Wall Street, and big tech. Republicans are pretty much an entirely white, older, and rural party now, thus they tend to be racist, sexist, etc. The Democrats have a diverse urban and suburban coalition and a progressive faction that pushes, often unsuccessfully, for more bottom-up prosperity. Republicans don't fundamentally care about freedoms other than protecting property rights, capital, and inheritances. Democrats do and give lip service to collective justice. Biden is a centrist--not a socialist--and was part of many bipartisan policies that have led to today's social problems. The progressives are pushing him hard to care more about the American people. There will likely be opportunities to influence him in office or if he doesn't serve a full term. I am interested in who he chooses as VP and in his administration. Ultimately, he is not the best or the worst, but he is a lot better than Trump, who only cares about enriching himself.

WilyRickWiles comments on Jun 19, 2020:
I wouldn't interpret this as a criticism of the left. Here he is blaming white liberals for offering nominal but not structural support. For keeping blacks trapped in slums and introducing vices into them. He was pessimistic that whites or successful blacks in the American system could actually provide opportunity for blacks as a whole. Elsewhere, he made comments similar to what Dr. King said about the white moderate.
