Yikes. Sorry you experienced that, but I'm not surprised. That sort of thing is often offered on here as justification for conspiracy theories about leftists, liberals, and Jewish people, and the idea that non-Anglo people are inherently unable to integrate and deserve to be stripped of human rights and deported. Never mind actually studying history (including the immigrant background and treatment of their own family), accounting for moral obligations to people in other countries, and the results of studies on the integration of immigrant families (who are largely integrated by the second generation). They see immigration of people who speak other languages as an invasion--an act of war--and ethnic cleansing, and so they want to ethnically cleanse and purge leftist and liberal allies in return.
Did 9/11 and its aftermath change your view of the world?
WilyRickWiles comments on Sep 11, 2020:
On 9/11 I was an open-minded Republican beginning college. I had slept in and felt like I was hit by a bus after I woke and turned on the TV in my dorm room. I remember wondering how it was possible that our air defenses hadn't been able to prevent the planes from crashing into the WTC and Pentagon. Months later, as the tragedy was exploited to wage the GWOT, which had been the goal of many of Bush's advisors prior even to his election, I became a Democrat. The nonstop official lies of the Bush administration, mixed with the rise of a police state, created a national paranoia that probably hadn't been seen since the Cuban missile crisis and wouldn't be seen again until COVID-19 hit and the police state ramped up in response to protests for racial justice. I remember the inevitability of the Iraq War. 60% disapproval flipped into a murderous national unity after a massive cable news propaganda campaign. Who can forget the military porn? I recall tracking the rising tally of civilian casualties in Iraq. I remember how grifters like Alex Jones directed their ire at Republicans back then. I've only moved further left since as I've learned more about the fuckery of neoconservatives, nativists, and neoliberals over the last 50 years. Hard to believe we're still being ruled by the same generation of failed leaders!
May the ideology behind 9/ be destroyed forever. [youtu.be]

Are people more racist now than they were 20 years ago?
WilyRickWiles comments on Sep 5, 2020:
With some historical distance, we can now see how: 1. The gains of the Civil Rights Movement were halted by Nixon amid a racist backlash a year after they were secured, 2. Clinton and Bush offered neoliberalism, 3. Neoliberalism, while offering marginally better racial representation, did not meaningfully correct racism or poverty, 4. The Republican Party increasingly exploited latent bigotries, especially those of older white men, to divide and conquer a diversifying country, and 5. Now the Republican Party embraces fascism while the Democratic Party clings to neoliberalism and the marginalized left embraces social democracy.

WilyRickWiles comments on Aug 26, 2020:
I would say authoritarianism should be. It has communist, neoliberal, and fascist flavors, all bad enough to outlaw. As for socialism in the absence of authoritarianism, it has a positive moral quality compared to the evil of fascism and the seeming neutrality of liberalism.
Have you guys heard of the boogaloo boys?
WilyRickWiles comments on Aug 26, 2020:
The shooter was a 17-year old blue lives matter type who answered Alex Jones's LARPing call and joined the boogaloo boys playing cop outside a gas station. He shot a brawler in the head who chased him after they had been arguing all night. Then when bystanders tried to citizens arrest him, he shot them too. The boogaloo boys disavowed him and left town afterwards.
Simply put, people get stereotyped, and sometimes shot and killed because of their shitty behavior.

So... what do you think about Kamala Harris?
WilyRickWiles comments on Aug 12, 2020:
Biden wanted a woman who was "simpatico." That meant that she would have to be somewhat similar in politics and have a personal connection. In politics, they are both centrists. I did not think they had a personal connection, but she did make a connection with Biden's son Beau when they were both AGs. Biden's age is another consideration, and Kamala is young but qualified. Moreover, her age, background, and the fact that she is relatively fresh on the scene make it easier to posture as a progressive. And to her credit, despite her positions, her voting record is progressive. There are other calculi in making a VP pick, of course. Typically, the Democrats have picked a white centrist man from a swing state to appeal to mythical white moderate swing voters. With increasing polarization, the Democrats are waking up to the fact that there are far more voters to gain from left leaning independents. Democratic constituencies such as liberal women and the black middle class already vote very reliably, and their turnout will be boosted in this election by anti-Trump sentiment. Biden could have appealed to less reliable progressives and the black working class by picking a more progressive black candidate (at least not a former prosecutor like Kamala), but his candidacy is so strong with the aforementioned reliable voters and the emergence of diverse millennials, particularly in the suburbs, as a reliable bloc, that he can confidently shut them out. Likewise, there would have been little relative value in picking someone from a swing state. So he made the best "diverse," "simpatico," young, fresh, qualified, centrist pick available to him.

WilyRickWiles comments on Aug 7, 2020:
It's not great. It's better to have a consistent and principled approach to these things from day one. It was also very bad when Trump had a Huawei executive arrested for circumventing Iran sanctions that were only in place because we pulled out of the Iran Deal. The worst members of both parties appear to be set on a war with China which would only be disastrous for the world. That being said, I think TikTok and Chinese tech should be avoided.

WilyRickWiles comments on Aug 5, 2020:
Orwell was a socialist. Socialism keeps being reborn because of the failures of capitalism. It is at its root a criticism of capitalism. And capitalism in its current iteration is a reactionary movement against fights for greater equality. As long as capitalism exists, any serious rival movement is going to combine that criticism with those fights. There are different points of view on the end goal, but our politics have moved so far to the right that there are only a few potential endpoints in the near term: national authoritarianism (Orban, Salvini, Modi, Bannon, Hitler), fascistic neoliberalism (Pinochet), authoritarian neoliberalism (Bloomberg, Singapore), soft neoliberalism (privatization and technocracy--the EU and US status quo), social neoliberalism (most developed countries minus the US), and social democracy (mixed economy--FDR, Scandinavia, Brazil under Lula, Bernie).

Do you bring this up in the context of his recent legal boundary pushing? Trump is a lazy, self-interested authoritarian. Leftists admit that many of his policies are not new or shocking but a continuation of the bipartisan consensus of recent decades. What alarms them is the boundary pushing with immigrants, with the Census, in Washington, DC, in Portland, and possibly in cities throughout the country, combined with the open desire of at least 30% of the population for a civil war to cleanse the country of leftists, liberals, and minorities.
