RobBlair comments on Apr 3, 2020:
My wife went shopping this morning and they still don't have toilet paper and paper towels due to people hoarding. If we removed the "profiteering" stigma, stores would have increased their costs in response to the false demand and forced hoarders to either reconsider their purchase of 10 year supply of toilet paper, or, the grocery store would make an excessive profit that they could then use to accelerate the purchase of more TP. That's a win-win-win-win - purchaser-store-manufacturer - and us because, for a little more money, we'd have a couple more weeks of TP and towels. A little more complicated here, but follows the same line. A bunch of people were highly motivated ($460!!) to purchase covid tests that weren't approved (see quote below). The price alone should cast doubt that these highly motivated customers were ignorant buffoons. If I was super rich (who else wouldn't wait for the free test?) and wanted to get tested immediately, this is probably a good deal. The middle man does exceedingly well and is motivated to supply more tests and the testing company makes their money. I'd wish the testing company charged the middle man more and the middle man charged less, but I wasn't the super rich customer that had to have the test immediately. If the middle man doctor didn't educate his customers before selling the test then he could be held to charges of fraud. That is not clear in the story. "To offer its coronavirus testing capabilities to the new programme, Randox’s Coronavirus Multiplex Array recently underwent evaluation from Public Health England. In its evaluation of the Randox test, Public Health England’s report noted that the assay correctly identified all positive and negative samples without exception. As a result the government are proceeding to utilise the Randox Coronavirus Multiplex Array in the new testing programme for NHS staff, with an exceptionally high degree of confidence." - https://www.randox.com/government-covid-testing-nhs-staff/

About 20% of untreated patients require intubation. 80% don't. The chance of 2 patients not requiring intubation is 80% * 80% = 0.8^2 = 64%. The chance that 20 patients don't require intubation is about 1%. 100 patients is effectively 0. Just numbers, but I like numbers.

Consider a Brit with a cough walking into a private health clinic that specifically does not treat emergencies. The Brit will probably not pay for the service and there is an NHS hospital 5 blocks away that is already geared up to treat the cough. The clinic immediately says we can't help you here do you want us to call an ambulance? (Doesn't have quarantine procedures, ventilator, fast testing and pharmacy the hospital does). If you haven't thought of this scenario, consider, you are in a system that doesn't really want you questioning how effective it is. If something like this happens in the UK, who is going to tell you? What good would it do anyhow?

The market provides information that informs businesses. When you invest or sell in the market you are communicating where you think the future is regarding that company. 'They' is you if you invest in the market. Even during this time, the market is filled with opportunities (communication systems, software, hospital construction, medical research, etc...) and some companies will require long term corrections (Theaters, sports tickets, airlines, etc...).

That's a tough one. Getting sick is not the big deal. Using up hospital services and exposing others is. As for understanding the risk of infection, it seems higher than the flu. What do we close down during the flu season? (We do close some retirement homes). The big problem is that we need to establish an acceptable baseline. South Korea seems to be the ideal and Italy is what we want to avoid. As info comes in (countries are bending the curve and the mortality rate is coming into focus as a little higher than the Flu), it looks like these church goers may be vindicated. Amazon will now deliver for free to Palestine – Middle East Monitor
RobBlair comments on Mar 5, 2020:
Two questions are completely left unanswered: 1. If I could save on shipping costs by having my package delivered to a fictitious address that just happens to coincide with my actual address, why wouldn't I? (Hatred has a place here) 2. Why did Amazon have this policy? - “multiple technical, legal and logistical challenges that have prevented us from offering our free shipping promotion to our customers in the Palestinian Territories. We have been working on a solution to some of these challenges and are now providing access to the free delivery promotion to our customers in the West Bank.” So we just ignore what Amazon says? Maybe Israel makes it harder to ship to Palestinians? Maybe there is a fee imposed on shipments to Palestine? Maybe Palestinians are known to steal packages or engage in frivolous returns in a way that Israelis aren't? I support the right of businesses to make economically informed decisions regarding how they do business in different cultures. If a business determines that "free" deliveries are economically beneficial to the company due to a local culture that respects other people's property and doesn't engage in frivolous returns, then have at it. I discourage companies and the forces that impose themselves on companies, from making political decisions that are not directly based on forwarding the company. In this case I promote AirBnB, Expedia, TripAdvisor, Booking Holdings, General Mills, and Motorola for gaining the ire of the UN "Human Rights" Council regarding the UN's blackmail list against these companies.

Where collective bargaining is incompatible with these organizations’ missions, the Department of Defense should not be forced to sacrifice its national security mission and, instead, seek relief through third parties and administrative fora.” So compete or die. But, to predict one way or the other is speculation for sheep. The reason why incident rates are low is because the WHO is working to contain the virus.

This article uses American Exceptionalism to illustrate the failures of that principle under slavery, and broken treaties against Native Americans. Only by holding us to the ideal do we see our failures. American Exceptionalism was used by Frederick Douglass in his July 4th speech where he both commended the founders principles and condemned his countrymens' abuse. "Fellow Citizens, I am not wanting in respect for the fathers of this republic. The signers of the Declaration of Independence were brave men. They were great men, too-great enough to give frame to a great age. It does not often happen to a nation to raise, at one time, such a number of truly great men. The point from which I am compelled to view them is not, certainly, the most favorable; and yet I cannot contemplate their great deeds with less than admiration. They were statesmen, patriots and heroes, and for the good they did, and the principles they contended for, I will unite with you to honor their memory. ... Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common.-The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. ... America is false to the past, false to the present, and solemnly binds herself to be false to the future. Standing with God and the crushed and bleeding slave on this occasion, I will, in the name of humanity which is outraged, in the name of liberty which is fettered, in the name of the constitution and the Bible which are disregarded and trampled upon, dare to call in question and to denounce, with all the emphasis I can command, everything that serves to perpetuate slavery-the great sin and shame of America! ... Would you have me argue that man is entitled to liberty? that he is the rightful owner of his own body? You have already declared it." http://www.historyisaweapon.com/defcon1/douglassjuly4.html Within the decade the US Civil War was fought to correct this wrong that we inherited from the British.

Trump is a pathological liar for saying - "...didn't he get married in Moscow?" "I did not get married in Moscow" - whew! Cause I thought I saw videos of him yucking it up with fellow bare-chested communists in Russia. So glad to know that they were from Yaroslavl and not Moscow. And, that it was his "honeymoon" and not where he got married. From what he said, I got the impression that Yaroslavl was just a couple exits up I-89 from Burlington, Vermont the "sister" city. Nope, it's right there next to wonderful Moscow - aka the great home of Stalin. And what idiot would make a city in the USSR a sister city? Well the program was started in 1988 under then mayor, Bernie Sanders --- the communist. Go get in your own bread lines Bernie.

Hard to believe that economic success isn't part of people choosing to be their own god. I recall a pastor from the Kensington area in Philadelphia (very poor and rundown area) stating that you don't need to tell his neighbors that they are sinners. You only need that explanation for the wealthy suburbanites.

When looking at the top 10 companies from 1996 compared to today, there are 2 companies, Walmart and AT&T that are still there on their own and Exxon and Mobil that are still there by merging. However, there is one entity that has maintained, if not excelled in its position of power over the markets despite its inability to: - Produce a profit - Improve performance - Fire non-performers That of course is our government. The FTC failed to do its job during the housing bubble. For that alone, it should be dissolved.

So the law is specific to entities (construction companies, speakers, etc...) that are seeking a contract with the state. Once her speaking engagement was completed, she would be free to boycott Israel to her heart's content. I'd compare it with a law stating that the state can't contract with the KKK, or the neo-nazis for their Holloween party. Petitioning against the state's interest at the same time you are an agent of the state is a bit of an ethical problem.
