Great conversation with economist and professor Richard Wolff on China and Socialism
RobBlair comments on Aug 7, 2019:
"People with the most money get the scarce material." An economist should recognize that the people who provide the scarce material then get the money which then means they become people with money. In socialism, the government gets the scarce material and the people with the scarce material get whatever the government wants to give them "Run them for the benefit of everybody" sure because everybody are the only ones who are still alive. "The first thing the [soviet leadership] did was to distribute land to the peasants" - no, the first thing they did was steal the land from the owners. Same thing with the Chinese. In both cases killing 10s of millions. Yes, the Chinese, as with the soviets, recognized that central control over markets caused Bernie's bread lines (for the benefit of everybody). "The Chinese have been pretty careful about taking their pollution problem seriously" - nope. Compare the Post Office to UPS and FedEx - fantastic! Then he follows it up with railroads - hilarious! Government brings the cost down! https://informationstation.org/kitchen_table_econ/subsidies-drive-costs-up-not-down-2/ The Japanese, not China, prior to WW2, is the best example of a country that accelerated through the Industrial Age.

Can Christianity Survive Its Cathedrals? - Religious Socialism
RobBlair comments on Aug 6, 2019:
"Now I understand the Reformation" my brother stated as we walked into St. Peter's Basilica in Rome. Under the immense vaulted ceiling, marked in seemingly random increments along the floor are the names of other cathedrals from around the world that would easily fit within the cavern of St Peters. There is only one Christian Church and the Pope is not in charge of it. If a structure were to represent all of Christendom one would have to think that that building would be in Jerusalem and not Rome. But "Then they said come let us make a city with a tower that reaches to the heavens so that we can make a name for ourselves." That plan didn't and still doesn't work. As for Socialism - https://www.prageru.com/video/was-jesus-a-socialist/ The Good Samaritan didn't wait for the government to help his neighbor, he pulled out his own wallet and paid for the care of his injured neighbor himself.

Not sure what we need this for, we already have the FBI and ATF. Remember Waco? This bill needs to have a sunset. If the assessment is garbage then we should get rid of it. In my mind, some money needs to go to the NSA for machine surveillance of public posting sites (don't they already do this?) Anyone who publicly posts a specific actionable threat of violence against a person or group should be flagged ASAP. This is against the law and should be prosecuted (Hi NSA bot!). Racial profiling is a sensitive issue and has been deemed illegal. But profiling, because we aren't stupid, is what we all do. With limited resources, I fully expect our police force to do the same. What could go wrong? - Assessments could be used against individuals in civil trials (divorce). - Police could use the assessments to harass civilians (Ruby Ridge) - Political opportunists could use assessments for political means (ex. give us your tax records) - Profiling could encourage police to neglect other groups of bad entities (ex. ignore Antifa but focus on proud boys) Looking at the recent failures of the Feds regarding Stoneman Douglas and Sutherland Springs, I think there is enough the Feds are already bad at. Adding "assessments" will probably not help and does offer harm.

If we can't talk about ideas without resorting to ad hominems, then we have lost the key to western culture. Criticizing Israel is not anti-semitic. Is it time to stop using the word "Racist"?
RobBlair comments on Jul 25, 2019:
Racism Merriam Webster - racial prejudice or discrimination https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/racism Lexico/Oxford - Prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. https://www.lexico.com/en/definition/racism Bing - prejudice, discrimination, or antagonism directed against a person or people on the basis of their membership in a particular racial or ethnic group, **typically one that is a minority or marginalized.** - promotion of the minority class over the majority within it's own definition seems prejudicial. Prejudice - preconceived opinion that is **not based on reason** or actual experience. - I highlight this because there is group going around saying that people who support the results of IQ data as it pertains to race are committing "scientific racism" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_racism (ex. Stephan Molyneux, Charles Murray, ...) Further from MW - "Racism appears to be a word of recent origin, with no citations currently known that would suggest the word was in use prior to the early 20th century... Dictionaries are often treated as the final arbiter in arguments over a word’s meaning, but they are not always well suited for settling disputes." First, I move to erase discrimination as part of the definition. If I was making an accurate historical drama based on ancient Japan, I would categorically discriminate against non-Japanese for the cast. I would not consider that racism. So I would support a modified Oxford definition of - Prejudice, or antagonism directed against someone of a different race based on the belief that one's own race is superior. I think having discussions on racism is healthy. And, the misuse of the label identifies people who are tools.

Listened to an interesting podcast between Ben Sapiro and Ravi Zacharias.
RobBlair comments on Jul 23, 2019:
That's a misread - everyone is wrong. Didn't Ravi mention the terrible mis steps the church has made? All evil comes from people believing that they are their own god - something like superseding their own knowledge with reality. We have the option to hear challenges to our perception of reality and either change ourselves to fit reality or be our own god and further separate ourselves from how things actually are. I'd suggest the Sam Harris interview but he's also full of presuppositions. What intellectual food do you enjoy in Australia?

Partisan politics,  is a dangerous and counterproductive endeavor.
RobBlair comments on Jul 22, 2019:
Partisan politics - can be dangerous if you allow the mass opinion to misrepresent you in immoral ways. Two party system has "worked" for a long time. I think it's important to baseline the comparison against another real system, such as the parliamentary system in European countries. The US is currently the longest living constitutional republic. Our current stalemate is mostly due to an uninterested congress coupled with judicial activism. This is enabled by a disinterested public. We are currently fat, dumb and happy. This will change when things start going south (the politically inclined, like us, are a minority). We are ignorant at our choosing. The mass of information that is available provides little excuse for ignorance. Except for a few political items, what is important, how priorities are arranged, etc... should be handled by the free market (a 100% democracy). As for the poor, sick, homeless and the elderly - the US has always been one of the most charitable countries in the world. As for "the media" you get a say in that every time you read an article or watch a news show. You can be part of a large donor. Like the 2nd amendment? Then support the NRA or something similar. Romney isn't a sociopath and he just ran for Senate. Nudge him a little and I'm sure he's going to run for president again. He's burned that bridge as far as the primary but who knows. There will be lots of Republicans who want to "restore" the conservative image by losing to the next cynical machiavellian the Democrats produce.

Does India deserve foreign aid when they can afford this kind of project...?
RobBlair comments on Jul 22, 2019:
Should recharacterize foreign aid as "mutual foreign trade purchases." Of course that highlights the fact that we have no idea what is being purchased which is a long standing problem with "foreign aid."

RobBlair comments on Jul 20, 2019:
"the programme’s purpose is to teach that ‘you can be who you want to be; you can be yourself’" - actually you are born with inherent properties so no - no one should tell the next Jeffrey Dahmer to "...be yourself." Hey school, how about reading, writing, arithmetic? Since when are schools responsible for the "tide of history"? "re-educate children morally" - Yes the moral arbiters of government are here to tell us how to live. Islamaphobia is a "type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness" - also completely stupid. What race are muslims? Is it Islamaphobic when people react to Muslims expressing their (Koranically dictated) Muslimness in violent, often lethal ways? Maybe an honest dialog would be more appropriate instead of mischaracterizing people's motives?

RobBlair comments on Jul 20, 2019:
"These objections are often urged with a show of sincere solicitude for the welfare of the slaves themselves. It is said, what will you do with them? they can't take care of themselves; they would all come to the North; they would not work; they would become a burden upon the State, and a blot upon society;" "What shall be done with them? Our answer is, do nothing with them; mind your business, and let them mind theirs. Your doing with them is their greatest misfortune. They have been undone by your doings, and all they now ask, and really have need of at your hands, is just to let them alone. They suffer by every interference, and succeed best by being let alone." "As colored men, we only ask to be allowed to do with ourselves, subject only to the same great laws for the welfare of human society which apply to other men, Jews, Gentiles, Barbarian, Sythian. Let us stand upon our own legs, work with our own hands, and eat bread in the sweat of our own brows. When you, our white fellow countrymen, have attempted to do anything for us, it has generally been to deprive us of some right, power or privilege which you yourself would die before you would submit to have taken from you." "The great majority of human duties are of this negative character. If men were born in need of crutches, instead of having legs, the fact would be otherwise. We should then be in need of help, and would require outside aid; but according to the wiser and better arrangement of nature, our duty is done better by not hindering than by helping our fellowmen; or, in other words, the best way to help them is just to let them help themselves." https://rbscp.lib.rochester.edu/4386 Asked and answered by the best person to respond, Frederick Douglass, Former Slave, Intrepid Spokesman for Emancipation, Great American Treasure
