Who is the world’s no. 1 bad guy? | The Outline
govols comments on Jan 8, 2020:
The world's number one bad guy HAS to be Genghis Khan. His war efforts killed something like 10% of the global population. 40,000,000 people, give or take. He raped enough women and killed enough "indigenous" males that his descendants currently alive number around 16,000,000; that's just among the male population. His method can only be described as a terror campaign. He would besiege a city-state, demand surrender, and any that failed to do so would pretty much have all of the women raped in front of their men-folk, and then the men all killed.
Are you a descendent of any of these people?
govols comments on Jan 8, 2020:
Yep, that's some diversity. The outfits are a trip. Of the names I'm aware, the interweb says one might have origins in France and the others appear to be Welsh, English and Scottish. The fact of over half of my clan being rooted in Southern Appalachia suggests possible Scots-Irish for part of the Scottish. Is religion adaptive?
govols comments on Jan 6, 2020:
This is too convoluted a topic without some discussion of terms and ideas. Because of the Theory of Evolution, "adapt" carries so many variations of meaning. Religion, in and of itself, does no such thing. Religiosity might be an evolutionarily adaptive trait among humans. A given belief system might provide one population an advantage over another population that collectively follows a differing belief system. Changes to social, political, or natural environment might alter knowledge in a manner that changes to belief systems must be affected in order for it to better inculturate believers to successful behavioral strategies. Religion isn't, itself, self-changing. (Had to edit to include "self," there.) The circumstances of populations are changing, and thus, too, are the array of "reality describing narratives." Successful narratives come to displace narratives that no longer promote societal success. For starters.
Is religion adaptive?
govols comments on Jan 6, 2020:
I have an idea that religion, in as much as it provides a center around which society revolves, is adaptive. I'm not sure "religion," per se, is necessary, but it serves ***some*** function that seems to me to be very much necessary to the overall cohesiveness of a culture. I have, also, an idea that the fact of well over half of every population being merely average or below in intelligence gives some existential advantage to a narrative form of social expectation for individuals within to internalize. One of the interesting things about the story form is how it appeals to almost any level or type of intellect. Is religion adaptable? Yep. The world over, cultural beliefs have developed over time as the natural and, especially, social environment evolve. One thing I notice is that as religiosity declines, it's more and more difficult to locate a cultural center that a super-majority of a given society can voluntarily agree on.

govols comments on Dec 16, 2019:
Well, pick a Western cultural or social issue that you consider to be important. Examine it for any deficiencies that you can identify as such might be measured from a traditionalist perspective. Dig into the origins until you find where things began to "come apart," or, in other words, where things began to upend social norms and expectations. Jew are well known to be statistically over-represented in an array of culturally influential professions from legal theory to academia to entertainment, marketing, and general merchandising. Everywhere you find disruptions you're almost statistically guaranteed to find some highly placed and well regarded Jews among the avant garde. It takes no effort at all to expose oneself to an abundant body of literature through which to explore the various efforts to establish and explore the "Jewish Question." I've read stuff about medieval interbreeding for purposes of elevating status, all sorts of stuff. Add to that the very real cultural "Othering" that Jews often practice(d) upon the cultures into which they "infiltrated," their tribal tendencies--real or imagined--and you get some shit that is easily looked at through a conspiratorial lens if one is inclined toward such perspectives. It can readily be discovered as self-evident if one ever comes to "see" it. I mean, hell, the notion goes all the way back to their (and for many of us, our) historical religious texts. A Jew sold into Egypt as a SLAVE and he winds up second only to Pharaoh...and it power and influence maybe even above Pharaoh. It's just a really easy leap to make if it's a path one stumbles on.

govols comments on Dec 10, 2019:
It's really all up to the representative in the house; they can politically impeach on just about anything they can dream up and pass on a simple majority vote. The senate is supposed to determine whether the facts demonstrate the impeached to be guilty of whatever the house impeached him for. Precedent says otherwise in the senate, that instead the senators have every authority to dismiss the accusation as not highly enough abhorrent behavior to justify the house's determination. I doubt the house impeachment managers will persuade the senators to remove the president. Personally, I don't think he's done anything that's any more improper than several of his predecessors.

The vast majority of philosophy is based on examining questions that really have no empirical answers. Here comes the judge. Did you know impeachment is not a legal proceeding?
govols comments on Nov 22, 2019:
I've always known it was a political process in the House, but I consider it more a legal process in the Senate. I think the Constitution really reads in a way that says the House can look at actions by the president, and if the actions are criminal, but not "High Crimes," not impeach. If the actions are NOT crimes, but mis***demeanors***, misbehaviors, even poor decorum in performance of the Office of the President--if rank enough--can be impeachable should the House so decide. It's a political indictment for the representatives of the people to determine. The Senate I look at differently. In the Senate, the matter of whether the offense is worthy of impeachment is not in question. That question isn't on trial, but already determined. The question for the Senate is whether the President actually committed the deeds which the House accuses. It's my opinion that the Senate has no more right to judge the determination of the House than any Jury has to determine the legitimacy of the Law or a trial judge's instructions. Current jurisprudence shuns the notion of Jury Nullification, and as such, the American People should hold the Senate to the same rules the Courts expect of citizen juries. Clinton was guilty of everything the House brought to the Senate. The Senate took it upon itself not to acquit the president, but to nullify the authority of the House to determine if presidential demeanor was impeachable. That's the current precedent. Given that, the Senate today gets to judge the validity of the accusations rather than whether the president behaved in the manner of which the House accuses.
