I have noticed something odd about our society with this virus scare going on.
govols comments on Mar 20, 2020:
Appreciation for different sorts of people during different sorts of crises isn't quite the same as hero worship, and hero worship isn't quite the same as deferring personal responsibility. Personal responsibility isn't the same as public obligation and accountability to ones community. The need for heroes is very real and examples of regular people "just doing their jobs" ALSO being heroic are a great comfort in times of doubt. If I flipped a switch that turned off the global economy, I could stop the spread of all disease in a month; it would kill a few billion people. In times when basic human interaction is abnormally risky, "just doing your job" is a small but important act of heroism.

In times like now the relationship itself will become a emergency resource. By having this resource, you can serve as a resource to your more personally important relations. By focusing on how you can serve your local community by MAKING IT LOCAL, you can in turn make it PERSONAL, and thereby make of yourself a service provider to those most directly important to you.

Will racism/the idea of race ever become a thing of the past?
govols comments on Mar 3, 2020:
It seems like we require a new socio-psychological technology if we're to really integrate toward a species level shared identity. We really aren't equipped to think of all of us as "of a group." I am simply not---period--one of seven point something humans; I'm one of several dozen neighbors; several dozen sectional identities within the United States; several dozen ethnic Christian denominations, etc.; but I'm simply not one among several billion humans on an emotional level. Logic won't fix it. Reason won't change it. A giant alien space invasion might, but beyond that, some new emotionally salient "revealed" way of seeing would be required for me to see Yankees as the same as Southerners.
Will racism/the idea of race ever become a thing of the past?
govols comments on Mar 3, 2020:
As far as I'm concerned it is self-evident that there are several basic, broad, obvious evolutionarily differentiated, largely continentally based sub-species within the human population. This fact is the culmination of tens of thousands of years of population isolation within varied environments and within the various social structures each sub-population developed to increase survival toward positive reproduction rates. As population isolation decreases, mongrelization will increase. Toward what result? Time will tell.
Most people, it seems, still don't see this as being relevant.

This really is a "break-down of the family" sort of issue. I read a story about a feminist who wants to move toward institutional surrogacy for all children. Wow... Is this how Christians see atheists in America?
govols comments on Feb 2, 2020:
Imagine being a personalty type that's maybe high in conscientiousness, low to moderate emotional stability, a low to moderate openness to new ideas and experiences. Keeping in mind that a vast amount of American common class culture even still has Christianity pretty deeply embedded right down into its roots; the vast changes to technology and the near annihilation of regard among the culture making institutions for religion as a whole, Christianity writ large, and for openly expressed and practiced Christianity in particular; the fact of so much academic work expressing current social and cultural establishment and institutions as inherently hateful, racist, sexist, etc., and that especially Christian white men are largely the blame for all of the oppression ever experienced by any people, anywhere, any when, ever. Now, start tearing it all down over the course of only a couple of generations, always accelerating and revealing new and exciting ways that the very structure of American culture is in fact, quite literally evil. Now, lets remind ourselves of the vociferous assault from the "well-educated New Atheists" on the ignorance of the superstitious masses who could be led to enlightenment if they could only be educated on the wisdom of the modern age of reason. Enter fucking internet and mass information, facebook and twitter, the magnification of SJW and the insanity of gender-studies as presented from the fringes. Most of which is coming from self avowed atheists who think they're bringing the world toward progress. While I don't agree with the comments above, I understand the perspective from which they arise.

I would really enjoy seeing some liberals like James engage with the actual "right." There are flaws in liberalism, all the way down. There is no "arc of History" bending toward justice. The Enlightenment is failed.

A Manifesto Against the Enemies of Modernity [areomagazine.com]
govols comments on Jan 23, 2020:
I think the authors have developed a great comprehension of the (post)modern left but have failed to as closely examine the "work" being done on the (new) right. The fact is many on the right are postmodernists. Many have studied the same philosophies as the left, identified the same problems with modernity as the postmodernist left, and having also studied science, also understand the complexity of the modern age AND the human condition. The right isn't all filled up with premodern feudal traditionalists. Much of their case for tradition is based on the fact that they think no two individuals OR populations are equivalent; the only notion about "Enlightenment" they reject is its evolution toward complete atomization, individualization, and its modern assumption that equal humanity can overcome the un-equality among individuals themselves. They tend to think that pitiably few of us can develop a functional set of productive values from reason and science, but instead need cultural institutions to mold into our personalities a meaningful manner of being. The right is doing its work in and from philosophy, psychology, sociology, genetics, neurology, anthropology, and many other arts and science. A big problem is that science leads to sometimes dark conclusions, and when it does, the modern enlightened classical liberal tends to discredit the scientist rather than do the work required to overturn the results of their work. The modern enlightened classical liberal has his own ideological blind spot; he's come to worship his own narrative. He fails to recognize that many of his own deeply held beliefs are the product of his own inculturation.

Well, I have an idea that they're disconnected from the English/Scottish Enlightenment notions that are sort of foundational to individualism. It took a while for the right mix of ideas to be stumbled upon, but "studies" finally criticized and demoralized the west enough that "studies" ideas of hyphen-identity could be installed into the brain framework where love of culture and country used to run. The current collective identities aren't the desired "working-class solidarity" but it's close enough--apparently--but they're close enough to load socialism on to.
