The bigger issue, to me, is with the cops going to an address with an understanding that the visit might be increasingly dangerous. That circumstance might invoke preparedness standards of the sort that puts everyone who is or becomes involved on edge. These sorts of "warrants" will eventually spiral into SWAT type "no-knock" assaults. Best case, a calm bystander victim of misidentification who actually doesn't have a loaded gun at his bedside. Worst case? These due-process violating warrant services will result in deaths.

One specific phenomena they touch on is "the cascade effect." When a situation is intolerable enough that one person speaks out loudly, if someone--anybody--in the audience provide the first slow clap of applause, and then another, and another... One just needed somebody to say it. The next most disaffected needed to hear it, and hear somebody support it. So on until an audience actually cheers aloud, with relief that they're not alone.

The problem with much of the media is the tendency to deconstruct every aspect of an event and then reconstruct it as bullshit. govols taking off his skeptic's hat...where's that damned "true believer" atheist cap I keep around here? Ah! Yep, still tight (no wonder I get irritated when it's on.) There is some evidence that we make connections, we imprint, we become "entangled" with people--especially people we're very close with. I think sometimes it's all of the people "pulling for" the loved one to "hold on until _ gets home to say goodbye" is more what keeps the near dead loved one's systems running than the medics. When one entangled faith filled cornerstone finally begs for relief, it breaks the entanglement.

I'm not sure exactly how things are going in UK or EU, but in US the war of ideas has concluded that all human interactions are about "The Will to Power." You either win, or you get ground to bits by the winners.

The Christchurch paper was way longer, but the recent one really covered many of the same ideas. govols comments on Aug 5, 2019:
I swear, there has to be a way to revisit the enlightenment. The rationalization of "natural rights" was based in a theory that--as a function of nature--morals and rights and duties could be universally reasoned. The thing is, all of that was grounded in 15-19 centuries of Christian belief in the individual divinity of man. But the enlightenment foundations of reason and empiricism eventually, inevitably, rejected the divine; the enlightenment itself blew out the spark on which it's very ideals were founded. If we're to allow that "God is dead," the we better own up to the fact that "We have killed him, and no waters exist that might wash away the blood from our hands." We are in desperate need, in this day and age, for either the Second Coming of Christ Himself, or a deep and broad re-examination of Aristotle's Virtues and Ethics. We can return to Faith, or we can have faith in Reason, but if we're to survive the enlightenment's inevitable conclusions we see in practice today, we have to ground it again in something ancient.

govols comments on Jul 18, 2019:
JBP and others who are brave enough to discuss traits seem to do so with full knowledge and with every effort to disclaim applicability to all cases. The simple way for people to get it is to look up a standard distribution curve just to see the shape. Draw a bunch of overlapping bell-curves. Label each as aggressiveness, agreeableness, intelligence, passivity, openness, respect for authority, athleticism, persistence, gullibility...pick a bunch of traits and imagine a curve for each trait and each sex, and make sure that for each trait the curve for sex largely overlaps. For each race the curve largely overlaps. Most of the time we share a lot of overlap, and the deviation is largely at the tails. The overlap is real; we're largely the same. The variation at the tails and at the peaks is also real; there are real deviations between groups and among them. Sociological and psychological statistics are all overlapping and don't predict for specific individuals. The point is to attempt the fabrication of useful ways of framing interesting questions and devising theories that can be tested through well-designed strategies of study.

Yeah, he's gonna just keep piling it higher and deeper. After all, there's just so much of it to shovel. It's like the hard-core left has been piling up shit for a few decades and he was like, "Well, I can't redirect the waters but I can grab this shovel and start flinging!"
