I wouldn't disagree, but I think it's an over-simplification. You'd have to delve into why they dislike the current state of affairs, and I doubt we have enough time or space here for that discussion. My simplified view is that there are forces out there that crave power, dominance, and wealth. You can't maintain control over millions (billions?) of people unless you consolidate it at the government level. Take a look at most Progressive causes and see if there are any that don't lead to expanded govt, both in size and degree of control. Every one of us knows the old adage; power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. If we let the govt grow large and give it great control over our freedoms, those freedoms will inevitably cease to exist. And getting them back will be next to impossible. A few simple examples will demonstrate their unwillingness to part with their gains. Can you imagine getting Congress to give itself a pay cut? How about term limits? Would they curb spending and give the taxes back to the people? The government doesn't give back what it gets without a mighty struggle.

While the carnal side of me wants to cry foul and fight back, the Spirit reminds me that Jesus predicted that his followers would be persecuted. Persecution takes a variety of forms, but maybe we should be thankful. The church doesn't grow much during times of prosperity because...well, we all understand human nature. We grow and become stronger under adversity. So does the church. Persecution isn't necessarily a bad thing from God's perspective. I think it saddens him, but he sees the potential for good to flow from it. I know it sounds odd to be thankful for times like these, but we've collectively brought them on ourselves, and if we submit to God's plan, these could be truly great times from his point of view.

Naomi, I think we all understand that the euthanizing of unwanted animals is bothersome to you. You're not alone. But unless you are putting animal life on the same level as human life, saying that animal euthanasia is as bad as abortion is an emotional position. Don't get me wrong, I think pretty much everyone agrees that putting animals down simply because they are unwanted is sad and tragic. But it's no where near the level of taking a human life. And I don't know about you, but I find it pretty odd that animals that are euthanized die quite peacefully, while abortion, particularly at later stages of pregnancy, is absolutely barbaric. Again, I understand your argument here, and I wholeheartedly agree that animal euthanasia is sometimes done for lousy reasons. But comparing it to abortion isn't the way to solve the problem. The only way that argument flies, in my opinion, is if you think animal life is on the same level as human life. For reasons I've stated elsewhere here, that is most definitely not the case.

This would be difficult to define, but I'd like to see| a law that automatically penalizes anyone who brings a frivolous lawsuit that is thrown out of court. The problem, of course, is defining what constitutes frivolous. Judges could make the determination, but that would likely lead to a lot of inconsistency. But maybe just the threat of penalty would deter many who are just up to no good. Maybe penalize the lawyers who take on those cases, too.

It sounds like you're dealing with a skeptic. Most of them I've encountered don't want to do any heavy lifting, but would rather put the burden of proof on you, then poke holes in your arguments. The simplest reference is John 1:1-4, which says clearly that the Word (Jesus) is God. I don't know if that constitutes "proof". I suppose it depends on whether or not you consider the Bible to be authoritative.

No, I don't. I know some people can, but I suspect most of us don't. I used to feel like something was wrong because I couldn't pinpoint a date. I remember when I was baptized, which is actually more meaningful to me. Your salvation experience is totally unique because God's plan for your life is totally unique. Your experiences, upbringing, temperament, family dynamic, education, how you heard the gospel and how you responded to it are unquestionably one of a kind. Consider, too, that hearing the gospel and believing it don't equal salvation. I don't remember a time when I didn't believe Jesus is who he says he is and that he died so we might have eternal life. But I can assure you I spent many years unsaved. It wasn't until I changed my view of sin that everything changed. Don't compare yourself and your testimony to anyone else's. The only thing people need to hear is how your life was without Christ, and how is it now.

I'm afraid the answer, which is increasingly difficult to maintain today, is a strong family unit. The gradual collapse of the family over the past couple of generations is, IMO, the reason we see the garbage we do. The best you can do is model the kind of behavior you want your kids to exhibit. I have no problem with the idea of a young earth, but I don't think it's the only view that should be put forward. I'm open to the possibility that Genesis 1 was designed to be an account that could be easily passed down from generation to generation verbally, and as such is only concerned with what God did and not how long it took him. The problem I have with the old-earth accounts I've read is that I haven't seen one yet that seriously considers the ramifications of a catastrophic global flood. So that leaves me on the fence, which is fine by me because I find origins debates to be divisive. I'm more concerned with where we're all going than how long we've been around.
