Self defense and the castle doctrine (protecting your property, home and family lives, are from English common law, which ironically, the Brits have forsaken. It would have been super if Madison had had the foresight to anticipate the totalitarian left and include the protections that were assumed/taken for granted (in his time) into the bill of rights. That is where the self protection comes in, not British law or version of it. Yes the 2nd was written to cover out of control government and that was installed to make sure a King style "government like the British monarchy. You had the right to keep and bear arms because there was no one there to protect you of your family but yourself, anywhere.

I respectfully disagree. The 2nd enshrines our right to form militias for the purpose of over throwing a tyrannical Government. WRT Common Law, Please see: William Blackstone's Commentaries on the Laws of England. This work was extremely influential and was known, admired, and adopted by the founding fathers. Besides it was the "law of the land", beginning with the first English settlements which pre-date the French and Indian wars.
I have never understood the people who want to hand over their guns. Even as a left-leaning person I realized that 1) women need that equalizer and 2) there hasn't been a single nation on earth that hasn't at some point turned on its citizens.
