Stores installed self-checkout devices to save money. They brought their customers on board with promises that those customers would save money as well. The cost of theft was part of the equation, with the assumption being the stores would manage that cost, along with the self-checkout technology. There was never an assumption that people would be good or that they would operate on the honor system. So, if the technology is inadequate, it’s up to the stores to change it. Or abandon it. The latter would be my preference.

Like Peterson, I find that I’m a lot more quiet these days. And I proof read what I’ve written much more cautiously. All in all, I’m not yet confident that I’m successful. My failures sting. And IMHO he was largely successful. But his reasoning depends largely on the presence of that common culture that you talk about in the last paragraph of your post. He started with a presumption that his audience held a set of shared common beliefs, instilled by their upbringing. That is the basis for morality. That is its starting point.

I think it captures the futility of a life lived without much introspection. Nia is not very insightful when it comes to her own feelings. Her emotions are mainly tepid. She didn’t particularly care for this or that. Her regrets don’t seem to affect her behavior significantly. Her experience of love seems fleeting, mystical and almost random. In fact, most of the events in her life seem to be accidental. Pointing this out is good, I suppose, as a warning to others; but the film doesn’t provide any guidance or even any suggestions as to how make a better path. And there are plenty of philosophers who have offered their guidance and suggestions. That’s really where life’s challenge lies: finding meaning, purpose. A Reason. So, by not exploring any alternatives, the film ends up expressing only hopelessness and despair. Which is the easy way out.

Reviewers (good ones anyway) should be able to warn parents about violence; and they should each express their own opinion, so a reader can get multiple views. But of course reviewers don’t do that, because of the rating system. And because journalism in general has deteriorated to the point where sloth is the norm. And perhaps because parents don’t think they should have to read movie reviews before letting their children see a film. The one thing the rating system has accomplished is to cause studios to self censor, in order to obtain a more marketable rating. It’s still censorship, but the industry has accepted it.

In the US we try to separate religious beliefs, which are protected by the First Amendment, from some religious practices, such as polygamy, which are not. I presume wife beating and FGM fall into this latter category. But as Dr. Warner has said, there are some Sharia apologists who will try to blur the line between faith and practice. One tactic I’ve seen in this regard is to try to characterize Sharia as an “alternative” rule of law to which people should have a right to subscribe voluntarily. Now, certainly one can voluntarily agree in advance to, say, arbitrate a contract dispute. But I’m not sure how one can voluntarily agree to being beaten or maimed. Sharia’s treatment of women is particularly primitive. Should any civilized society allow such treatment? I would have difficulty continuing to call such a society civilized. Perhaps another way to phrase it would be, do we require a Christian baker to bake an LGBTQ cake, while we allow a Muslim husband to beat his wife and mutilate his child?

If I recall correctly the Saudi hijackers all came from affluent, well-connected families. And of course bin Laden himself came from wealth. So there is certainly reason to believe 9/11 was known to or approved by the Saudi government, which is also a repressive dictatorship. So your point is well taken. Unfortunately there are other regimes in the Middle East that are worse. And, what we don’t know, to this day, is the degree (if any) to which the Saudi government helped in the aftermath of 9/11. At this point Iran and other bad actors are working to destabilize the region. So is this response the correct one? I suspect it is the best one, among other extremely poor choices. It’s the same way I vote, at nearly every election. Lesser of evils.

So what happens after you embrace the harsh truth of death and oblivion? Does life become meaningless, to the point that you feel compelled to kill yourself or others? And if not that, then what? How do you propose that people find meaning if not by creating it for themselves? And if they do manage to create such meaning, on what grounds do you object? That they are “fooling themselves?” What business is that of yours? Find your own meaning and let others do the same. Discuss, yes. Impose, no.

Good discussion but I wish it had been edited down a bit. The best part occurs after the 40:00 minute mark, when he begins to focus on the failure of socialism, and the hypocrisy (although he doesn’t use that word) of academia in continuing to promote the socialist agenda, all the while knowing it is a failure. He sees the destruction of the Berlin Wall as one of the most significant economic and political events of the previous thirty years, and as direct evidence of socialism’s utter failure.
