Are camgirls a net benefit or harm to society?

Pay-per-minute or tip-based erotic cam shows have become a multi-billion dollar industry in the last 20 years with over 60,000 independent or studio models (note: about 30% are men/trans) currently employed worldwide. While top models make $25,000 or more per month, most make less than $1,000 depending on hours and their relative sex appeal (meritocracy). The camgirl business is also up 25% with many people forced home due to Covid restrictions and having time, and other things, on their hands.

While there are financial and safety benefits for cam models, the work is emotionally demanding and has downsides for both the models and society at large. What do you think?

The cam industry is...

Having a job like this when you are young used to prevent you from getting a real job after you grow up.

Stormy Daniels made it OK. Prostitution is becoming legal as women are not really charged with prostitution anymore. They are 'victims of human trafficking.'

In my opinion it's fine as long as the people partaking are doing so of their own free will and are clean of hard drug use. I do think there should be help with those that want to get out of the industry with counselling and education. I think there needs to be safe places for them as well when working.

Since I’ve never understood the concept of “looking” being sexually stimulating I don’t really get the purpose of “camgirls” since I’ve never seen any of it/them.
I never bought magazines either though I’ve looked through plenty of those.
Personally, I find the female form ... youthful, healthy and in shape ... to be quite appealing to look at but almost more as a living, breathing statue. Pleasing to the eye but I’ve never moved past that to thinking about them in relation to sex.
I like high end lingerie or strip clubs because I find the beauty ... the form ... to be pleasing, relaxing and there are pretty strict rules about touching that make for a pretty sharp line of separation ... although in nude clubs, the performers seem intent on believing the patrons are there simply to perform gynecological exams so they’re a bit off-putting.
One of the advantages of these places is there is no tension created by the potential to meet one’s next partner / girlfriend / mate.
Honestly, though I haven’t seen any, I can’t see them as being negative as long as both parties are willing participants.
In this World I have been living in, most males have forgotten what it is to be a man and most females have forgotten what it is to be a woman ... especially “American” females.
Instead of sex, procreation, marriage and family being a complimentary dance of life and harmony, it has become some odd power struggle and discord.
Since neither gender is interested in tending to the needs and desires of the other, is there any reason to think it odd that both will look to outside sources to fantasize about?
How can it be that things like “camgirls” are any threat if the relationships are healthy and well tended?
I think that people who view such things as negatives probably have every right to do so but are more likely recognizing their own shortfalls ... shortcomings.

Joe Biden may be the next president, can-girls seem like a minor concern. 🙂

We are not evolved for civilization. In the natural world the need for delayed gratification exists but is limited by the ability to produce and store resources. If you are of necessity going to live fast and die young sex at any opportunity will increase fitness. Same for calorie consumption and all the other resources in a easy but unstable environment. If the only thing that will make people adopt a slow lifestyle is a fear of hell fire the question is mute. Religion of the variety that encourages a slow lifestyle is unlikely to make a comeback anytime soon. What I'm saying is that the potential harm of cam-girls isn't the question. It is just one of many problems that stem from being poorly adapted to the rather recent introduction of a civilized environment.

I have always been of the opinion that prostitution itself is, like government a necessary evil. In fact Gov't and prostitution have much more in common with one another than differences between them. Each of them sells their clients on things that are although fundamentally needed, desired they do not come (no pun intended) cheaply and they only offer short lived "fixes" or satisfactions.
I think human sexuality has been established as a fundamental and necessary aspect to human beings as basic; instinctual even.
The fact is that many thousands of people (mostly males) have little or no opportunity to express their natural sexual needs and prostitution and pornography is the easiest most expedient way for them to find release.
I tend to believe that without the accessibility and availability of sexual prostitution and pornography there could well be a much greater and less desirable (to society) occasions of crimes like rape, indecent public exposure, stalking etc.

I am truly a layman on the subject of human psychology and I certainly make no claim to know anything about psycho-sexual psychology pathologies.
Perhaps my thinking on the topic at hand is too linear. "if this - then that". Don't know.
But it seems to me that suppressed sexuality almost always leads to inappropriate and illegal expressions of said sexuality.
I have always believed that Prostitution and recreational use (self medicating?) of drugs and alcohol should be decriminalized but regulated. I believe it would greatly reduce crime and would in the long run provide for greater safety and for opportunities to change for the better prostitutes and drug abusers.
Suppression of human basic needs and instincts only leads to hopeless misery. The real contradiction of these suppressive laws and rules is that they are implemented, encacted and enforced (violently) in the name of Godliness and high morals. Laws that lead to more human suffering are NOT Godly and they are NOT moral. IMHO...jus sayn' LOL

What is the downside for society at large? It is no different in pros and cons than most other entertainment industries, such as TV / Film, Theater, Comics, Art, Books, Sports, Music, Video Games, Amusement Parks, or other recreation.

@Thaw I don't see it as "no reason". See my other comment to you.

@Thaw yeah but you can say that about a great many things. You can say infertile people shouldn't have sex. You can say that homosexuals should suppress their attraction. You can say that any non-coitus, non-for-procreation sex is troublesome. Humans have urges and addictive personalities, which doesn't just apply to sex - it can apply to alcohol, drugs, sugar, gambling, shopping, coffee, driving fast, social media... you name it. Why single out sex?
