Valid point there. Too many folks out there who fear knowledge.

And ban the guns to stop the guns...?

One of the sad conclusions I have come to is that the vast majority of people don't actually value Truth. It's not in the Hierarchy of Needs. At some point it might have been assumed to be valuable, because it's hard to achieve needs like food and shelter when you have no value for whether it's true or false whether oxygen is required to start a fire or not, but I don't think that's the case today. Today our technology designed and understood by a minority is readily available and the hierarchy of needs are mostly taken for granted even among the poorest in the western world. As such, the intrinsic valuing of truth has declined especially as social subsets reward "believing" false things, whether those communities are a religious group or a political/secular religious group like social justice warriors.

Ironically, it seems to me, our technology has actually undone some of the best fruits of the Enlightenment.

I don't think technology is at fault per se, but rather how human beings have used technology. Too many people these days rely on a gizmo to do the thinking for them.

I need an example of "evil knowledge" to better understand this meme. Is it the "alternative facts" thing?

Pretty much so.

@SpikeTalon well then I think part of the reason is that they have no love of objective truth. Leftists who think "alternative facts" are evil only believe in "your truth" or subjective truth.

@DrN1 why do you call them facts if they're provably false? From what I can tell it often means "facts we don't like because they go against our narrative"

If you tell a lie enough it becomes the truth. Progressive, Democracy, Racism, Truth.

The religious folks certainly seem to fear knowledge.

Really? I'm a Christian and have a wealth of knowledge. Where did you get your Ph.D? I finished my studies at Hopkins.

@Boardwine it is a concern. Many of us want "hearts and flowers" and refuse to engage with a God who allows things like the holocaust, genocides and tragedies. People who try to put God in a box should not be excused by us. Of course Harleyman is being generalistic and seemingly naïve regarding the scientific accomplishments that have been ushered in by Christendom. In any case, Atheists have made some of the most thoughtful Christians.

@RobBlair The pursuit of knowledge ,all knowledge, is a worthy endeavor. God reveals Himself in things seen and unseen. The story of the tower of Babel tells that there is nothing beyond our ability. We are created in His image and have been given the gifts of the divine.
I went to seminary for 2 years. The elders of my church(all of whom were Moody grads) at the time wanted me to become ordained and preach the Gospel. I dropped out when I realized that I was, in fact ,a very good preacher. Because I knew it was my pride that I would be serving if I chose that life.

I have a couple of close friends (& know of several others like minded) that graduated from Emory university and are currently successful pastors (& have been for many years) despite having to secretly conceal their issues with problematic historical accounts concerning the bible. They maintain their occupation for practical purposes. What's my point? Nothing.

@RobBlair Thanks for sharing that article. As an atheist it is good to see such thoughtful writing by non-atheists.

The knowledge I fear is that I can not live up to my own sinful expectations of what I think I should be. But I have a great support group in my church. I have the wrong idea of perfection when I look inward. True knowledge is the truth. Reality and truth are change. Life is change. I love life.

@Boardwine I have no problem with religious people and have been married to a somewhat religious woman for 44 years but it seems that common sense should dictate that religion just doesn’t make any sense. Having said that I also realize that arguing with the religious about their religion is generally quite pointless and I also accept that they are in general are a lot better people than the left wing liberals who unfortunately seem to be predominantly atheist are.
