It's only ironic if considered through the lens of a concern for humanity as a whole, for which they have no concern. Ever since I was a child and likely way before, certain groups try to scare us with over population. Meanwhile many nations are now concerned that they do not have enough people to support their society when the baby boomers retire. Regarding your point, it is ironic.
