I found this interview on The Federalist podcast pretty compelling. I'd like to read the book Alienated America: Why Some Places Thrive While Others Collapse by Timothy P. Carney.
I find it difficult to be meaningfully engaged in my community (other than church life and some community gardening) because so much time is taken up with keeping my own ship afloat. How do you connect with the real world around you?

Feel free to reply to any comment by clicking the "Reply" button.When isolation becomes too heavy, I act in a way that I wish others would do for me. I call a friend to see how they are doing, I text a "hello I'm thinking about you" to distant family members or I communicate with distant friends by sending a card or note. An older friend of mine found when he volunteered for the local museum he had new social engagements. I'm quite shy so the direct contacting helps me.

I do the same.
We moved a small town four years ago, when I was in my late 30's. I now live 2 1/2 hours away from everyone and everything I grew up with. I have no specific reasons to socialize with those living around me, and the people I wish I could socialize with aren't in my life in a significant way anymore. It's disappointing, but I'm detached from the community I live in.
I often go for long walks, and get together with some of those whom I've known for years. Helps keep me sane.
