Around 1970, a rising sensationalist handlebar mustachioed reporter convinced the public that institutions that housed mentally disturbed and dysfunctional people were generally unjust, based on a few failures of oversight.

The soccer mom's of America were outraged and the eventual result was the release of most of those folks being cared for in such places into the public - most of whom we now see as homeless people. Places like Camarillo State Hospital were eventually closed. (Some say that was the “Hotel California” - Eagles). Better, right?

Nope. Another example of an imperfect system doing what was possible for the unfortunate people in our society, being destroyed by public ignorance, fueled by the media. How many of them become killers? Some do.

The last I heard, that reporter (Geraldo Rivera) was proud of his work, and felt he had done a public service. If true, a perfect example of possibly good intentions going horribly wrong, and more likely that people can convince themselves of almost anything - including criminal incitement as a public service.

The insane are those who still think taking guns away from law abiding citizens will achieve what restoring institutions for proper care and treatment for those with serious mental health issues and disabilities, will more likely do to reduce the number of mass shootings.

Then there are increasing sets of data showing that the cities with the strictest gun laws have the highest murder rates, like Chicago.

Makes me think that those who want to remove the rights of others without rational cause should be given the opportunity firsthand to experience that by being locked up.
