Surely, we are all conservative in that we want to conserve good stuff that is functioning well while we are liberal in that we are open to new ideas and consider changes if we think they will do us good, no?
Or is black and white thinking more fun and exciting for the sake of being shocking and outrageous (though we know it's not realistic)?

Sure, things can (and occasionally do) change for the better, but think it through properly first, in light of past experience (yours and others' ).

Right on. As I think back on my own life, as a young man I used to be automatically suspect of almost anything traditional, but as I grew in maturity and understanding (obtaining a bit of wisdom along the way, I hope), I discovered that I changed. Now I give almost any traditional point of view or practice the automatic benefit of the doubt, and I seek to understand why that point of view or practice has been around so long before I think about wanting to change it this holds true for me concerning both politics and religion. Yes, I am open to change, but only after much consideration of why we have done things the way we have and becoming certain that it really is a change for the better.
I would like to think we all share some common ideas and values. Then I see people wanting to do away with law and order, and think its ok to harm others, destroy property, and demand the property of others because they feel they are owed something. It is at that point I am not so sure there is a common ground to work from.

The truth is that people such as you have described want to destroy the common ground upon which many of us -- if not most of us -- still stand. They want to destroy our civilization as we know it. So, I think you are right, and that we have no common ground to work from when dealing with such people. We simply have to win the culture war.
