Nothing does more damage to the left-leaning ideology than fighting purported talk of prejudice with prejudice, purported talk of violence with violence. Let anyone speak on campus who wants to speak Let anyone who wants to attend attend. The proper response is not canceling speech or preventing people from attending. The proper response is holding a speech of your own, specifically inviting people who attended the first speech to attend the second and allowing them, and others, to attend.

Too bad that similar actions by the state during a hurricane for example have long been held as constitutional. This ruling won't stand for long, mark my words. > Under state statute 166A-19.30., declaring a state of emergency offers government entities a considerable degree of power, far more than typically granted to them — including the following abilities: - To establish a system of economic controls over all resources, materials, and services to include food, clothing, shelter, fuel, rents, and wages, including the administration and enforcement of any rationing, price freezing, or similar federal order or regulation. - To regulate and control the flow of vehicular and pedestrian traffic, the congregation of persons in public places or buildings, lights and noises of all kinds, and the maintenance, extension, and operation of public utility and transportation services and facilities. - To procure, by purchase, condemnation, seizure, or by other means to construct, lease, transport, store, maintain, renovate, or distribute materials and facilities for emergency management without regard to the limitation of any existing law. ***Conflicting rights: How a state of emergency can challenge constitutional rights*** https://portcitydaily.com/local-news/2018/10/01/conflicting-rights-how-a-state-of-emergency-can-challenge-constitutional-rights/

Over half of the states in the USA have no minimum age at which a child can get married and thus be sexual. So why is a film showing behavior that would be legal in over half the US states a problem? Let's get a federal mandate on a legal age of marriage of 18+ and THEN get back to talking about this movies. Otherwise, this criticism falls on deaf ears as it doesn't apply to half the US states. > A nonprofit called Unchained at Last compiled statistics for marriages from 2000 to 2012. > According to the study of millennial and Gen Z adults aged between 18 and 39, almost half (48%) could not name a single concentration camp or ghetto established during the second world war. Not surprising as it was close to 80 years ago. How many adults can name a single POW camp during vietnam or a single campaign offensive during the Korean war without looking it up online or in a reference book? I bet you it would be less than half. ;) > Almost a quarter of respondents (23%) said they believed the Holocaust was a myth, or had been exaggerated, or they weren’t sure That's a lot of different answers to lump together. The first is egregious; it's not a myth. The second is plausible: it's possible it's been exagerated not due to malfisence or politics but merely shoddy records or liberal estimates. The third is reasonable; if they don't know or aren't sure what the numbers are, it's good to admit that. > Eleven per cent of respondents across the US believed that Jews had caused the Holocaust, with the proportion in New York state at 19%, followed by 16% in Louisiana, Tennessee and Montana, and 15% in Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Nevada and New Mexico. This is interesting. If you look at the map on the actual survey [1], you'll note it's very spread out with no (seeming) rhyme or reason for why NY is 19% and montana 17% but IL and IA are 8% and 6% respectively. As of late April, about half of those over 70 years old who had died from Covid-19 had been infected in nursing homes. TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 11, 2020:
Problem is the USA *is* a diverse country which *has* various cultures and mindsets. If there is no systemic prejudice (not using racism since prejudice is far more encompassing), then there should be no problems with accepting diverse points of views. Conversely, if there is a system wide problem with accepting diverse points of view, if it is written into our set of laws or our scriputure, then that is indicative of systemic prejudice. The Bible is a great piece of literature filled with a great many moral lesson. It is not, however, the only and can be wrong... such as Numbers 31: 17-18 for example. As such, and given our status as a secular nation, no one set of scriptures should be held above another: if the moral lessons are deemed good by society, those moral lessons should be embraced. That is how democracies and societies progress. If those moral lessons lead to a diminishing of society, they should be abolished. If they lead to no change or a positive change in society, retained. *"Where* we get those moral lessons shouldn't matter... scripture, movies, books, art, science... all valid sources for the investigation of the human condition... all valid sources for our morality. Pretty simple to co-exist IMO as long as we don't try to make OUR PERSONAL law the ONLY law but rather embrace the *original* (not the red-scare) motto of the USA: E PLURIBUS UNUM.
We Need to Re-think the Importance of Academia [wrongspeak.net]
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 11, 2020:
There absolutely needs to be a de-shaming of trade jobs and a de-gloryfying of academic degrees. Not everyone is meant to go to college just like not everyone is meant to work on cars. And there is also truth in what academia means and teaches. I knew I wanted to do physics from the moment I entered college. Yet, I had to take many non-physics, non-math pre-reqs and didn't even do my first math and physics till my second semester. I get that many people are discovering what they like and there may be a need to give them wide exposure. But why not get a job and get that exposure while *making* money instead of *spending* it? And why subject those of us who already *know* what we want to do to ancillary studies which broaden our minds, ok, but in the long term have no use... I've no useful memory of the latin or chinese history or other topics I needed to take to graduate. Academia is still important however. Advances in medicine, technology... the very internet and computers that allow us to have this conversation... have direct links to academic pursuits. The times when a person could make revolutionary advances in their basement and garage are over... todays knowledge is too far afield, too specialized, we've squeezed so much knowledge out of the world that the rest is like squeezing water from a rock: possible, but getting exponentially more difficult each year. Yes, academia is important. What we need to rethink is not the importance of academia... it is undoubtedly important... but how academia conducts itself and the unrealistic expectations that parents put on their kids in regards to academia.

You are a lover of horror films. Maybe people criticize them for gloryfying violence and gore, that they could get their point across in a more "Hitchcockian" way without resorting to actual gore. I bring this up because different people have different sensibilities to what is displayed on screen. And as a parent, it is clearly your responsability to be gate-keeper for your child. However, in modern times, just because you don't have netflix doesn't mean her friends don't. Just because you don't want her watching something that is already "out there" doesn't mean she won't. IMO, much like horror films, it might be best to have a conversation with her about the film, it's topics, and what you find objectionable such that she will *choose* not to watch it. Perhaps you've already had it in which case forgive me for the intrusion and presumption. But remember, as we all know, from time immemorial, the more you make something *taboo* to a child, the more they will seek it... which goes back to your love of horror movies which, I suspect, the more you were told not to watch them, the more you sought them out. ;)
Do you really believe Muslims intend to peacefully integrate into American culture?
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 11, 2020:
Reynolds v. US establishes the superiority of secular law of religious law in the US. Hence, except for cases where both parties are of the same religion and wish to arbitrate under a unique set of laws (such as Sharia, Talmud, Vatican, Jedi, whatever), one cannot enforce a religious law unto the public in general. 3.45 million muslims in american culture today. A distinct lack of 3.45 million calls for sharia law in american culture today.

What arguments may help progressives moderate or change their views?
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 10, 2020:
On both sides, my key is to try and speak *their* language not *my* language. To try to *understand* their perspective and thus rebut it instead of merely trying to *proselytize* my perspective and try to shove it down their throat. I have an easier task than most however: I want both sides to come closer to the middle, not to the other side. It is much easier to walk a progressive away from far-left identity politics and a conservative from alt-right conspiracy than to try to get a progressive to believe conspiracy or a conservative to accept identity politics. A gross example of this would be: If you are a progressive talking to a conservative, don't focus on changing their mind using calls to identity, academia, etc. Rather, use religion, economics, and liberalism to moderate an extreme view into a moderate one. If you are a conservative talking to a liberal, vice versa; don't focus on changing their mind using appeals to religion or economic but issues of identity and academia. ---- But this is understandably difficult for most because it asks that you think like the person you want to moderate. And in doing so, you risk, as Ender said in my favorite book *Enders Game*, quote: > ""In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it's impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves." And this is unconscionably to most, to *love thine enemy* is anathema to people on the far left and right... they are the enemy after all! They don't deserve love! But the truth is that they do deserve love, we all do. Just because you hold a different view should not *dehumanize* a person. Rather, they are an aspect of humanity that you don't embrace and in doing so, they have a perspective and viewpoint that while disagreeable to you, is not disagreeable to them and merits understanding. Another quote I'm fond of using, apocryphally by aristotle, is: > It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it. As such, we should all strive to entertain a thought from the other side even if we don't accept it. We are more educated that way at best... and you gain valuable ammo at worst! ;)

His moral ground is too low for us.
I Am Your Grandmother!
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 7, 2020:
Yes to all except the following: --- "The UNIVERSAL RIGHT of grandparents to hug their grandchildren " A PARENT, and to a lesser degree a KIDS, is the ultimate authority on their kids body, not the GRANDPARENT. If the parent doesn't want their kids hug, nobody, and I mean nobody, should be granted that right. Likewise, if the kids doesn't want a hug or kiss or any physical contact, they should not be forced to give said physical contact. Body autonomy is an important lesson for kids to learn and we teach them the wrong thing if we teach them that some people have a right to touch their bodies in ways they don't want or find uncomfortable. --- "The UNIVERSAL RIGHT of grandparents to show their grandchildren the smiles on their faces, not hidden behind masks." This right is in conflict with the statement re: communicable diseases. If the parents want the granparents to wear a mask becuase of the unknown of disease... or because there is known disease... nobody should be granted a right to do otherwise. Same with the kid: if he doesn't want to be around their grandparents without feeling safe with them behind a mask, nobody should be given the right to potentially, or actually, put the kid at . --- "The UNIVERSAL RIGHT of seniors to have in person visits from real live human beings, not just communication on line in a world which is totally unfamiliar to them." This again is in conflict with the statement re: communicable disease. If there is the potential, or actuality, that a grandparent has a disease then they don't have the right to force anyone else who doesn't want to be around them to be around them.

A) Climate change has nothing to do with the magnetic pole shift. B) The NASA data shows that the average dobson units has declined, and that the size has stablized and is starting a downward trend, since 79. It won't be fully closed till 2050 by some estimates but it's going in the right direction, is well understood, and so I'm not sure why it needs to have the same focus as before. Besides, the ozone hole is still very much at the forefront of climate scientists minds. Are you concerned that there will be a coup if Trump wins?
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 7, 2020:
The US public is too fragile and comfortable to stage a coup for either side. Trump nor Pelosi have the heart and minds of the military to stage a coup. If Trump wins, there will be huffing and puffing from the left but they won't blow the WH down. If Biden wins, there will be huffing and puffing from the right but little piggy will leave his WH. As per my second point about the military, Trump doesn't have their hearts nor mind so should he lose and be foolish enough to not vacate the WH (I SINCERELY doubt this scenario, but IF), then the military will remove him ...no doubt... as they have allegiance to the CIC, who would not be Trump in this scenario.

TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 6, 2020:
The "more in common" study seems like a great piece of work. I've not fully explored it (in particular their methodology and background of it's creators) but one thing stood out immediately. From there traits of the different tribes: – Progressive Activists: younger, highly engaged, secular, cosmopolitan, **angry**. – Traditional Liberals: older, retired, open to compromise, rational, cautious. – Passive Liberals: **unhappy, insecure, distrustful, disillusioned**. – Politically Disengaged: young, low income, **distrustful, detached**, patriotic, **conspiratorial**. – Moderates: engaged, civic-minded, middle-of-the-road, **pessimistic**, Protestant. – Traditional Conservatives: religious, middle class, patriotic, moralistic. – Devoted Conservatives: white, retired, highly engaged, uncompromising, patriotic. Where do these characterizations come from and why the preponderance of negative language (boldfaced) in the non-conservative camp and the complete absence of said negative language in the conservative camp? Maybe these characterizations come from the study but as they are right at the start with no indication, this gives me pause to think in terms of the objectivity of the study

From Trump's memo: """should begin to identify all available avenues within the law to **cancel any such contracts** and/or to divert Federal dollars away from these un-American propaganda training sessions."' It's amusing to see a person that is against cancel culture *quite literally* embraces cancel culture.
19 million black abortions since Roe vs Wade.
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 6, 2020:
The number of white non-hispanic for the same time period stands at roughly the same according to this estimate [1] So if one is to argue that the BLM crowd doesn't care for black lives due to black abortions, then one must also conclude that the ALM crowd doesn't care for white lives due to their white abortions. Yet, since it's a matter of debate *when* life starts, this may be a moot point insofar as no lives were lost if one doesn't believe abortion are alive to begin with. And of course, to attack BLM on a *literalist* interpretation their slogan is like attacking pro-lifers for supporting the death penalty or the military based on a *literalist* interpretation of their slogan. My take on DefundThePolice What do we think? Should we defund or defend the police?
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 5, 2020:
I think it a mistake to use the word "Instead". I think it better to use the word "in compliment". As I understand it, "Defund" is a poorly chosen word for "redistribute": put less money into tanks and more money into health professionals working with, not instead, of police. If you have no faith in mental health professionals, then I get it: you think they are ineffective on their own, why would they be effective in compliment with police. OTOH, if you do have faith in mental health professionals, then the more the merrier: having them to compliment the police mission can only do more good than them on their own. Oh, and we should really stop being an "or" society. We should start embracing "and" more often. As in we should "defund" AND defend the police.
Are people more racist now than they were 20 years ago?
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 5, 2020:
I don't know if more or less. But I do know whatever racism is out there is more visible now than then. 20 years ago, online, is not the same as today, online. 20 years ago with smartphone camera recording everything is not the same as 20 years ago with cameras. We are seeing more or the good and bad today. We are more connected in sharing our thoughts with each other than yesterday. Hard to say if we are more or less than 20 years ago... that's an impossible metric to compare given the wide differences in communication. But we *can* focus on where we are today and if we are happy with the way things are. And if you are happy with the status quo, is it right to find way to share that happines and status with others? And if you aren't happy with the status quo, is it right to examine ways that you could be happy and share in some of that status. **Worry less about yesterday; worry more about today. Worry less about your changing neighbor; worry more about changing yourself.**

Hi everyone, I have a dilemma/question for all of you.
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 5, 2020:
What is the topic of discussion? What are your scientist sources? What is she promoting instead? Without discussing more than you are willing to discuss about your case, it would help to see if she is wrong or if you are wrong if we had more information on the topic, not your case.. One possibility is as you say, she is held to her own views and ignores modern science. Most doctors have been doing things one way for so long that they don't embrace new views that easily. This is why it's important that as patients we take ownership of our own care. Another possibility is against what you say: that maybe you are not well versed enough in the subject to discern good science from bad and she is right to dismiss what you consider good science but really isn't.
Are police disproportionally killing (unarmed) black men?
TheMiddleWay comments on Sep 5, 2020:
I agree with your point about the media over-hyping certain deaths by individuals and the damage this causes to not only society and rational discourse, but property and life. Witness the latest, Blake in Kenosha, where new details are emerging that he was not there to break up a fight, the car he was getting into was not his own, the police where there to serve a felony sexual arrest warrant, that he might have been armed, and that he wasn't even supposed to be anywhere near his girlfriend. Yet despite all these new facts, all the media reports is "black man shot" and a city burns. HOWEVER, you are likely pulling your "19 unarmed white men" from a Larry Elders tweet. As this politifact entry [1] shows, this is "mostly false". I'll leave the curious reader to delve into it more but the takeaway is that that fact depends on who we consider unarmed and which database we are pulling these statistics from. This line jumped out at me from the politifact article: *"As of June 3, Mapping Police Violence had counted 28 unarmed blacks and 51 unarmed whites who died at the hands of police in 2019. "* First consider that your analysis is about *unarmed* individuals and thus to compare it to the criminal behaiviour of blacks v. white is a false comparison. That blacks commit more crimes than whites is factual and undeniable. However, *it bears no relation to the number of unarmed deaths*. Regardless of criminality, no one, black or white, should die at the hands of police if they are unarmed. And thus while there are ~1.8X more white deaths than black, they are also ~5.7X (76.3% vs. 13.4%)times more populous than blacks... hence not in proportion. For the unarmed killings to be in proportion, of the total 79 unarmed deaths, only about 11 should have been black and the other 68 should have been white. All together, this means that there are ~2.6X more unarmed black deaths than there should be if they were proportionate to the total, not just criminal, population. I agree that there is much uproar over killings that *should* be killings... namely armed assailants. And while there is histrionic media-induced frenzy even over those killings, that is not what we POC are upset about. We are mostly upset about the killings that *should not* be killings... the times when there was no cause for police to shoot to kill and yet they do. And on this upset, the claim of disproportionate killings stands when we view killings that *shouldn't* be killings. (PS: This analysis didn't even factor the race of the police officer being shot. That is an entirely different conversation and one that is also a cause of upset to us POC insofar as my "gut" tells me most, if not all, of those unarmed shooting were by white individuals which raises the question... and ...

Did you know: 1) It's published for a company, AIBRT, for which he is the staff member? 2) It's based on 21 undecided votes, not enough for statistical significance by any standard? 3) That the majority of citations in that papers are papers he wrote himself? 4) That only ONE of those papers cited was peer-reviewed? So why *should* this have gotten more attention when it's such a shoddy piece of work? https://aibrt.org/downloads/EPSTEIN_-A_Method_for_Detecting_Bias_in_Search_Rankings-AIBRT_WP--02_6-1-.pdf
