Revelation 16:13 and 19:20 says there will be a duo who will be calling the shots during that time: the "beast" or the antichrist, and his false prophet. Based on numerous prophetic passages, the bible is pointing to this beast as an ethnic Assyrian who has a low regard for women, will think to change times and laws, and will have a strong following among Israel's surrounding nations and those North of Israel. He will also have following from these unspecified "kings of the East." This "Assyrian" seems to be a dead ringer for the Mahdi, the muslim "messiah" in Islamic eschatology, which seem to be a deconstruction of the Judaeo-Christian eschatplogy. In their eschatology, their mahdi will supposedly have "christ" as his sidekick. Yup, the beast or the antichrist having a false christ as his sidekick. Islam also teaches of an antichrist figure, and they will put that label on our Lord Himself. Which would explain how gung-ho they will be in our end time prophecy in picking a fight with our returned Christ Who we read will be bogging down a massive invasion force at Megiddo with hail, storms, floods and earthquakes. The pope seems to be the only viable candidate for being the false prophet or the islamic "christ."
