The DIE religion reminds me of how Christianity infiltrated the Roman culture. What effect it had on the Roman Empire is much debated but it certainly didn't help to stabilize it.
The DIE religion is an effect of cultural decline as much as a cause. When the old religions faded it left a void. It seems that it isn't so much what people believe that is important as the sharing of belief, even if insincerely.
