After Mao's disastrous failure of the 'Great leap forward' he sought to find a way to reclaim his relevance and power. Mao, sought to enforce communist dogma and to rid the nation of the so-called "Four Olds;" old customs
old culture
old habits
old ideas
So he gathered the young, ranging from elementary school age to university students. Youth full of contempt for the status quo, unable to see any good future for themselves, filled with communist ideas of collectivism/equality and now chosen/empowered to bring about great change through revolution. These youth became the infamous 'Red Guard'. Motivated to 'totally transform the country'. They attacked the country with the vigor of zealots to flush out the counter-revolutionaries, enforce communist dogma and implement re-education through humiliation, violence and killings. There are parallels that are evident in our social upheaval today. Some communist/marxists will proudly declare their position while others would deny this association and label thoughts of this sort as just dredging up the ghost of McCarthyism's 'red scare'. But what about the DSA, AOC, Bernie Sanders, antifa, equity via identity politics, PC speech enforcement, etc?

@dd54 Yes I know there is far-left academics which is a big problem. What I mean was that we don't have a strong and charismatic far-left leader like Mao who has a cult of personnality surrounding him and can make people obey him blindly. So the worst episodes of the cultural revolution certainly won't happen.
In all revolutions that have ended in the takeover of a country by communist the leading persons that helped were rounded up and detained or executed to make sure that when the new government did not deliver on there promise they would not raise up against them.
