LINK Colleges Chose Diversity Over Merit. Now, They’re Getting Neither
Since eliminating standardized tests in the college admissions process, higher education institutions are struggling to judge applicants.
“It’s pure magical thinking to expect good results by eliminating standardized tests. From the start, it’s been clear that removing objective tests from admissions would erode standards—and it has—while simultaneously giving a greater advantage to wealth students who can game the ‘holistic admissions’ system,” John Sailers, a fellow at the National Association of Scholars, told the Daily Caller News Foundation.
College admissions officers do not have standards to judge applicants without test scores, leading to a “stressful” process.

Sounds about right. When you eliminate standardized testing you’re left without any objective standards for judging candidates. The admissions process becomes more subjective and therefore more vulnerable to criticism. Hence more stress on those making the judgment calls.

Was it merit-based when only white Christian men could attend? Are legacy admissions and automatic admissions from elite boarding schools merit-based? Are quotas for small, rural, prominently-white US states merit-based? Are putting a token number of "diverse" children on an elite path equitable? When was higher education merit- or diversity-based? Regardless, surely a nominal but insufficient movement toward diversity is effectively more merit-based than the status quo ante.

Do you think people who can't do math should get a share of math PhDs equal to their percentage of the population? There are a lot of people who can't do math and they're definitely underrepresented among math PhDs.
