LINK Why is the Left suddenly talking about a second Civil War?
Just a few months ago the Atlantic published a piece claiming that there was a group of conservatives preparing for a new civil war because the country was now so divided between the conservative right and the woke left. Since then, it seems the left is eagerly picking up on the civil war theme. A few days ago the Guardian published a piece titled “The next US civil war is already here–we just refuse to see it.” The author of the piece has just written a book predicting a civil war is coming soon.

The first civil war was preceded by a generation of propaganda from Democrats. They were different from the north. They were better. They should secede if federal government demanded too much. Today they're talking secession if they lose control of the federal government.
But the South was a cohesive geographical area. Leftist America is concentrated on the two coasts with a scattering of Midwest states.

OK, here's my read of the ante bellum South. The Industrial Revolution in Britain created an insatiable demand for cotton. Eli Whitney's cotton gin made it exponentially easier to process cotton in industrial quantities. Suddenly, cotton plantations with slave labor were profitable. Before the cotton gin, slave plantations were barely profitable After the cotton gin, there were more millionaires in Charleston, SC than any other city in America. The cotton gin 'saved' slavery in the US.
Did the plantation owners realize they were the lucky fools playing the bass tuba the day it rained gold? No, they thought they were geniuses. They bought newspapers and magazines. They endowed schools. All to promulgate the views that the South was distinctly different and distinctly better than the rest of the US. These newspapers magazines and colleges not only defended Southern Culture, but also slavery; not just as a necessity but as a positive good.
The emerging Darwinist evolutionary philosophy lent a scientific patina to their assertions. As it would for another eighty years.
Racism is a moral wrong in the Bible (Colossians 3:12). Kidnapping people into slavery (which was the basis of Southern slavery) is a capital offense in the Bible (Exodus 21:16). People in the ante bellum South deliberately overlooked these passages in order to justify themselves and their 'peculiar institution.'
I am wholly against racism in our society. Because of our history and our racial mix, we have no choice. Because of the Bible's teaching, I have no choice.

The old joke is that a cotton gin is just a fluffy martini.
Cotton bolls have tiny little seeds in them. After you'd picked all the cotton you had to pick out the seeds. It was enormously labor intensive. Cotton Gins passed the bolls through closely spaced wires that filter out seeds. It was an tremendous time saver. And like I said, it made slave labor on cotton plantations vastly profitable.
