Did God Replace Israel? Prof. Mishkin Debunks "Replacement Theology"! (10:02)
The erroneous interpretation of Israel being replaced by the Church in God's plans started with Origen and, later, Augustin. Not surprisingly, as both Origen and Augustin followed a hermeneutic of allegorization or "spiritualization," a mideocre method of interpretation which made the text say whatever the reader wanted it to say, as it was now all allegorical. "Israel" could now be allegorized to "really" mean the Church. Which, also not surprisingly, planted the seeds of antisemitism among those who walked under the banner of Christ. The Holocaust, for example, was made possible by the false teaching of "Replacement Theology." 19th century Germany were mainly Lutheran Protestants, and Luther was patently antisemitic, urging believers to hate the Jews, "just as the Lord hated them."

@dmatic Let me put it this way: the ancient church fathers up to the middle of the 2nd century did not teach replacement theology. This new doctrine came in through Adamantius Origen and, later, Augustin. Now they obviously taught different Israelology and Eschatology that those before them. Now let's go back to scripture as authority. Those who think Isaiah 11 is talking about the church have to do a lot of allegorizing there. Just as the 1st century rabbis rejected the miracles that the Lord did because they ran contrary to their expectation brought about by their presuppositions, a modern-day reader of the bible would reject the fulfillment of Isaiah 11:11 because it runs counter to his presuppositions. Those who subscribe to replacement theology did not get that just from reading scripture. They got it from somewhere else. That's why it's useful to use the inductive method in studying the bible and not come to the word of God already saddled with all sorts of doctrines.

When Messiah returns, the Sabbath will be reinstated. The temple then will only be open during Sabbaths and new moons, as was with the ordinances of Moses.
