A take on ethics

Ethics is simple, it's a matter of course that man applies his own ethical values. Based on reason and justification as opposed to intuition.

Ethical law out with the theocratic locus of thought is simply "first do no harm". Its moral aspects of life that are far more challenging to deal with. Morality is an extremely personal and relative phenomenon, predominantly manifest by social learning.

A moral principle is a principal that reduces suffering ether the suffering of oneself, others or both. However, that principle must exist in ethical backdrop "first do no harm".

We should try to manifest things that reduce suffering in the world, ethics would demand justice and just in and of itself is equality under the law. We seem to arrive if all parties are honest and without jealousy at individualism as the most ethical and moral system of social justice and organisation, it promotes that any right of mine should not infringe on the rights of others nor obligate them to act as a matter of compulsory behaviour.

What is sad so few people read this post.

It is actually important and the basic understanding of these is missing.

Since Trump or some other click bait or religious word was not included in there title... few bothered to read it.

It speaks volumes of humans and the contributors here in general.

Very well written and true.

We codified morality in religion, which is not in itself a problem. However, our inclination is to cast that code in stone and the ethical origin is lost in favour of dogma.

There is no learning and reasoning as our social understand develop.

Hence today we have the conflict what is moral, and never considering its ethical roots.

Philosophers over the years have pondered on issues such as do no harm or what is the good etc but such aims, simple as they sound, present problems in real life. What to do when others don’t sign up to them and wish to do you harm? Do you ‘do no harm’ if by choosing such a course you facilitate even greater harm being carried out at a later date. Likewise what is good now might in retrospect not have been and is it good for the few to suffer for the sake of the many and so on.
As you say, ethics is external, morality is personal but again, in real life although the basic principles should be similar, what drives them particularly but certainly not uniquely, in today’s society, is a long way off ‘do no harm’. It could be said that laws are now often introduced because the moral codes of many have strayed a long way from that principle and even the application (If not the legislation itself) of our Human Rights laws has lost sight of the need to ensure that one person’s rights should not infringe the rights of others.

Individualism, or as I see it as relativistic morality is not an ethical solution. What I do can have detrimental effects on others without my intention, since they may be exposed to my actions. There is physical, emotional, and psychological harm. And these detrimental effects are greater or lesser depending on the person's level of physical or emotional maturity. At that point I think group not individual morality comes into play. When attempting to reduce suffering, that becomes a relativistic term, whose suffering, who is responsible (if anyone is) and why to reduce another's suffering that might be the result of poor choices that no one else is responsible for. The other item today is feelings of suffering. not necessarily objectively valid. All victims feel suffering, but are all victims really that. I think the definitions, boundaries, and objectivity that would be required to discuss many of these issues is in question currently.
