I brought up the tail-end of four brothers, all of us in the Corps, and served during the latter years of the Vietnam era. Two brothers did their 13 months in the jungle and all my fellow platoon Sgt's were combat vets. I developed a distinction between myself and those who actually put their lives in enemy apertures. But I've always been uncomfortable with those who talked-up their service. My fellow vets did not nor did my Brothers. I always figured guys like me got as good as we gave and respond to "thanks for your service" with "it was my honor". I would have challenged this guy - suspecting he was all BS and at worst a case of 'stolen valor', especially with his age, but at best for his attitude as well. Even were I told it was all in fun I'd have had trouble understanding the point. Whose expense is he having fun at? Too much cognitive dissonance here for me to get it.
