Every generation of business moguls thinks they epitomize intellectual and moral ideals of the future.
Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin in the last years of 18th century, This coincided with the Industrial Revolution in Britain and a massive increase in the demand for cotton. This new demand and the cotton gin made slavery profitable. Cotton was the raw material for England's textile industry and the planters became magnates.
Did the planters consider themselves lucky recipients of fortune? Did they think they just "happened to be playing the bass tuba the day it rained gold"? No, they thought it was because they were innately superior.
Wealthy southern planters bought newspapers and started magazines extolling the innate superiority of slave owning societies and the South. They supported authors and speakers who praised the South as both distinct from and better than the rest of the country. In the end, it was a major cause of the Civil War.
Southern planters aren't the only group this happened to. Railroads, steel, mass circulation media, oil, you name it. They all considered themselves the pinnacle of human achievement. They all tried to remake humanity in their own image (and for their own profit.)
Tech Magnates are center stage right now. They have the kind of wealth and influence of Gilded Age plutocrats. And they have the same hubris. Just like previous generations, they are trying to remake society in their own image and for their own profit.
We'll see how it works for them.

Great work! Good point. I don't know that it's limited to tech magnates, though. It seems almost like the elitism stems from something other than economic factors. It's more like a power currency--and maybe more superficially, a fame currency. Even twats in Hollywood are virtue signaling their superiority. So hard to parse since most of those people are rich too. Maybe it is just a money thing. But, some full participants--like University professors--don't have the money, but are at the peak of the innately superior movement. Any thoughts on a redistribution of the elitism?

It's all about the banks, someone has money and ego, they may not do anything for humanity but still think they are great. How do you replace banks and money?

There is a web of money between all the actors. Big Tech is buying legacy media (Time magazine, Washington Post, The Atlantic, etc.). Comcast has legacy TV networks. Microsoft has MSNBC. Netflicks buys movie studio talent. And of course they all endow universities. And politicians (Nancy Pelosi is powerful because she knows the money spigots in Silicon Valley).
New, vibrant institutions are springing up all the time. Liberty University has 47 thousand undergraduates enrolled. BYU is so big it needs satellite campuses to grow. And those are just top-of-the-mind examples.
Public education is failing, but private schools and home schooling are flourishing. Family oriented movies are big business in spite of Hollywood's disdain. New institutions bring new elites. In a way, Trump's election brings to light the current elites' declining influence.
