Whether they are or not is irrelevant to the assignment of motive. In reality they don't know why they do what they do anymore than anyone else. In the final analysis we are all driven by the same instincts. The mistake we make is in assuming that instinct is easy to understand. This is essentially true when you consider group selection and eusocial cultural forces.
There has never been a time in history when populism was popular with people who consider themselves elite. It explains most of the reaction in the establishment to the Trump movement. No matter how many mistakes the elite make they are as prone to blaming the wrong causes as anyone else. In politics admitting you were wrong is seldom a good strategy. It creates a positive feedback loop for error that eventually breaks the system.
