"Regime cleavage" in America has nothing to do with Trump, he's just another symptom.
There’s a huge gap between the Left and the Right, both in America and more generally throughout the West.
It's a gap that will not be bridged, will not be resolved by compromise, and will not go away.
The Left has an entirely different vision of what the government is for… why it’s even there, that has been drilled into their heads incessantly and Progressively over the last 140 years or so; a vision that is quite simply... wrong, at least in the context of America.

On the Right:
The American government was reluctantly created to preserve the inherent, natural sovereignty of the Individual over the collective; with only very specific abdication of sovereignty to the collective, as necessary to intercede when one individual’s rights are being threatened by another individual.
The Constitution was established as a nearly-immutable fence around the government; to manifest our founding premise laid out in the Declaration of Independence, and to constrain the natural tendency of any centralized authority to accumulate power over time, one might say: “Progressively”, and to never give it up… thereby, eventually and inevitably snowballing into a single, tyrannical body of centralized sovereignty.

On the Left:
The collectivists’ objective is to facilitate that very convergence of sovereignty that we established America specifically to get away from; convergence into the centralized government, as the agent of the imaginary “collective”, and as a necessary evil to nurture the nebulous and subjectively-defined “common good."
Since the collective isn’t actually a thing, and has no agency as a sovereign entity; it requires an actual agent be created in the real world to act on its behalf, and to implement its priorities. The problem with that is, that any such created agent develops, effectively, priorities of its own. And, since it has been endowed with absconded-sovereignty to impose its “will”; it inevitably does so on its own behalf.
This is commonly referred to as “creating a monster."

The collectivists' relentless quest for centralized power and control is predicated on the fundamental misconception that it is the government’s job to “take care of you.”
Also, the ubiquitous reference to America as a “democracy”; preserves the misunderstanding that... if the majority decides they want something, the government should take it from someone else and give it to them.
These complementary fallacies form the engine of Progressivism that, to whatever extent we allow it, will ultimately converge all sovereignty away from the people and into a centralized government monster.

There are three characteristics of the distribution of sovereignty that I think hold true:

• Gov’t can’t provide something to you, without first taking it from someone else.
• Gov’t can’t take it from someone else, without first seizing the authority to do so.
• Once the gov’t acquires that authority, that piece of your sovereignty; you will never get it back... not through any peaceful means, anyway.
  (The founders actually built in a failsafe for this case; Article V of the Constitution is the peaceful mechanism to take the reigns from an unresponsive Congress. See: Convention of States for more info, but fully expect this critical part of the Constitution to be hysterically (and ignorantly) demonized by the "Left"... for obvious reasons.)

In America, we did not create the federal gov’t to take care of you or to make your life “better."
That’s your job. “Better” is subjective. It’s nobody else’s business how you define it in your own life, and it’s none of your business how other people define it in theirs.
The government’s job is to keep other people from violating your right to pursue your definition of a better life, to keep you from violating theirs; and to otherwise stay of the way.
Also; to resolve disputes among the States, and to represent the Republic to the rest of the world…
and that's it.

Until we can come up with some way to reconcile the Right’s understanding and the Left’s misunderstanding of what the government in America is even all about; we’ll never find common ground upon which to work together toward a common goal.
There is, quite simply, no common ground there.
In the meantime we will continue to be two distinct and incompatible societies, fighting each other over control of a single government, economy, geography; and both the public and private spheres.
The most important front in that conflict right now, seems to be the fight over freedom of expression. Dialogue is the only hope we have of ever resolving this "cleavage" peacefully.
And the Left is doing everything they can to blow up that bridge permanently.

You need to step away from the internet and think about your life. You are letting these people channel your problems into hatred for others. You don’t have to live like this.
